East Cork AC | Youghal AC |
Following their performances at the National Cross-Country Championships, in Rosapenna, Donegal, in November, East Cork AC Men and Youghal AC Under 20 Women have both been selected to represent Ireland at the ECCC Cross-Country Championships, in Oropesa del Mar, Spain, on Sunday February 5th
Timetable (PDF File)
"Despite being almost flat, the circuit designed for the event will certainly be challenging as each lap, runners will have to negotiate approximately 260 metres of sandy beach, which the organisers described in a rather unstated manner as “something very unusual in cross country events”.
In addition, this section of the course is also where the runners will face one of the most difficult parts of the circuit, what the organisers have dubbed ‘La Curva de la Muerte’ – or ‘The Death Turn’ in English – a 180-degree turn on a sandy surface which runs downhill.
The majority of the course, about 1500 metres, will be natural grass per lap but additional difficulty will come from a series of narrow sharp turns which will have little room in which to pass"
Athletics Ireland Release
The ECCC Cross Country is one of the longest standing and most established cross country fixtures on the calendar, even predating the SPAR European Cross Country Championships by more than three decades. The 2023 event will take place on 5th February in Oropesa del Mar in Spain
Eight Irish teams secured their place by virtue of their first and second place team finishes at the 2022 National Cross-Country Championships in Rosapenna, Donegal
The following clubs are eligible to travel in February with the support of a grant of €1000.00 from Athletics Ireland for each club to assist with costs

Jane Buckley, Leevale AC, is the November recipient of the Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month
In late August, Jane Buckley Leevale AC travelled to the USA to take up a Scholarship at Providence College. After only 10 weeks stateside, Jane won the Big East Cross-Country Championship. Notably, she is the first ever freshman in Providence history to win the Big East, and she is only the second ever Freshman in history to win the event, the first being in 1982
At the Northeast Regionals in New York, Jane was the Friars’ top performer again, finishing third, as they qualified for the NCAA championships, in Oklahoma, where she again led the way for her college. Again, making history. Jane finished 49th overall, the first time since 2015 that an athlete from the college had finished in the top-50 at the championship. She has hit the ground running in America
Competing in the Women’s U20 race at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Turin, Italy, last week, Jane put in a brilliant individual performance to secure a 5th place finish. Jane was right in contention for a medal until the final lap, and has announced her presence on the international scene.
Jane Buckley, coached by Ray Treacy and Chris Harrington is the Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month for November

The year-end registrations for Cork Athletics saw a new record of 8,521, exceeding the previous record of 8,455, set in 2019
It should be noted that 2022 registrations closed unexpectedly, on or about November 22nd, whereas the scheduled date was December 14th. Given that the year-end was approaching, it's not possible to estimate how many more registrations might have been added before the nominal closing date, however, as further championships, along with other events, were still to be held, it s clear that there would have been more registrations
Note: The top image is from Athletics Ireland's Registration page, and shows six more registrations than are in the actual Cork registration data]

Leevale AC top the adult listings, followed by Mallow AC and Midleton AC, with ten clubs topping 100 adult members
Senior registrations rose from 471 to 535. Our Provincial and National Champions and contenders, along with International representatives are more than likely to come from these ranks. The numbers active in this range are disappointingly small, pointing to a significant problem in attracting and retaining athletes, both male and female, in the age range 18 to 34
While the numbers in this category are disappointingly small, Leevale AC outpunch the rest significantly, with 81 Senior members. Togher AC are next, with 42, with several clubs in the 27 to 32 range

As per the last few years, the overall age distribution throws up some interesting observations:
There are two distinct distributions, based around Young Juveniles and Masters Athletes, with older Juveniles and Seniors literally nowhere to be seen

Overall, Girls outnumber boys by 190 registrations - 2,440 to 2,250 and comprise 52.03% of all Juvenile Registrations. Some notable features of the stats is that, up to age 9, the boys are in the majority. However, from age 9 through to 19, girls outnumber boys
A woorying feature is that, in spite of increasing registrations, the "Cliff" - the age at which registrations start to drop off - continues to drop. Numbers now fall off from age 9
The drop off of Juveniles has been noted across many sports in Ireland, and is worrying from a number of perspectives, not just athletics membership. In particular the non-participation of juveniles, along with the related and alarming growth in obesity, among juveniles and younger adults, is almost certainly going to lead to a significant rise in general population health issues in the coming years
The total number of Senior registrations remains alarmingly low, with just 665 registrations; 323 men and 342 women between 18 and 34. The women's figure is somewhat skewed, as, between 29 and 34, there are significantly more women than men; 169 to 104
From an athletics perspective, the low numbers between 18 and 34 is of particular concern, as this is the group from which our Championship, International and Olympic hopes will emerge. Historically, Cork has 'punched above its weight' in producing European, World and Olympic Champions and medalists, along with many, many International athletes. To continue this proud and valued heritage, we really need to be attracting, and retaining, more people in this age range
In recent years there has been a huge, and welcome, growth in women's registrations, with women of all ages taking up the sport. The stats illustrate this vividly; women outnumber men at every age, with one or two exceptions, from 35 through to 56. No doubt, given time, the figures above age 56 will also rise

Cork Athletics International Award Medals
The Cork Athletics Annual International & Aspiring Young Athlete Awards presentations will take place in the Kingsley Hotel, Carrigrohane Road, Cork, on Friday January 27th 2023. The awards are made to Cork athletes who have represented Ireland in athletics, during the previous twelve months, and have been nominated by their clubs and also grants will be issued to aspiring young athletes.
The awards ceremony is non ticketed but it would be useful if clubs could notify the secretary of numbers that they expect by Wednesday evening January 25th to faciliate numbers for the hotel .
Along with the International Awards, training bursaries are presented to Aspiring Young Athletes, selected on several criteria, including significant athletic achievement, progression and application to their chosen athletic discipline(s)

The 10-mile distance still retains an important place on the Irish running calendar, especially during the early months of the year when most of the high-profile events take place
As was done in 2018 and 2019, this is an attempt to compile an annual ranking list for men under 55:00 and women under 65:00 over 10 miles
The list shows the time (gun time), name/club/category, the race and finishing position, along with the date. Where an athlete appears more than once, just the surname is used after the initial listing
Jake O’Regan is top of the leader-board for men with his 48:40 at Bundoran and he also had another sub-49 clocking at the Great South Run in Portsmouth
Aoife Cooke ran 54:19 at Dungarvan and leads the women from Michelle Finn (55:09) who had three performances under 57 minutes
The most noticeable statistic is the dramatic rise in standards amongst the women, while the men have remained more or less the same (with even a drop at the sharp end)
In 2019 - the last year a full ranking list was possible - 15 female times appeared under 60 minutes, with a total of 69 under 65:00. In 2022, this has grown to 34 under 60:00 and 117 under 65:00
Meanwhile, in 2019, 12 male times were under 50 minutes and a total of 120 under 55:00. Last year, just eight were under 50:00 with a marginal increase of 127 under 55:00
Any additions or corrections are welcome and can be made on the comments section wherever this list appears and will updated accordingly
