"The Council recognises that these clubs, run by volunteers, are essential to maintaining a vibrant, sustainable sports sector. The grants scheme provides funds for projects that are directly related to enhancing facilities or the purchase of equipment
Announcing this year’s grants, Adrienne Rodgers, Director of Services, Cork City Council, said: “It has been a difficult few years, so sporting clubs and organisations are even more vital now for people’s health and wellbeing. With the Capital Grants Scheme, we are delighted to play our part in the continuing development of sports facilities throughout the city.”
Over the years this scheme has assisted all types of clubs and organisations, from football and rowing to athletics and taekwondo. When the 2022 Scheme was announced almost 100 applications were received. This consistent financial support offered by the Council greatly assists the clubs and delivers benefits to the wider community
The capital grants are not intended as an alternative to other sources of funding, but they complement other schemes, helping to bolster local contributions or assisting with funding where certain works are not covered by other grant schemes. They allow for minor capital work towards enhancement of premises, pitches, etc., as well as funding non-personal sports equipment that will be used for at least five years"
Cork City Council's Sports Capital Grant Scheme is now open to local voluntary sporting organisations and clubs, to develop and enhance sports and physical recreation throughout Cork City. The scheme provides grant aid to projects that are directly related to enhancing facilities, and must be of a capital nature
The scheme is not intended as an alternative to any Department Sports Capital Grant Scheme or other sources of funding, but will complement any such scheme, possibly helping with local contributions to satisfy criteria of other funding agencies or assisting with funding where certain works are not covered by other grant schemes
A total of €470,000 has been provided for the Scheme in 2023
This Scheme will allow for minor capital grants towards enhancement of premises, pitches etc., as well as allowing for the purchase of non personal sports equipment that will be used for at least five years
This Scheme will allow for capital grants to develop sport and active recreation facilities throughout the City.
All applications must be made online, through Cork City Councils Submit Application Portal, by Friday 31st March, 2023 at 5.00pm

January end-of-month registrations for Cork Athletics stand at a record 4.848.
Traditionally January is a slow month for Registrations, with clubs scampering to collect members subscriptions, but, this year, no doubt the new Athletics Ireland One Day Levy (ODL) is spurring the registrations on. Under the levy, non-AAI members, including those who have yet to renew their club memberships, including AAI registrations, are liable for a €2 premium on their race entries, so that incentivises people to register quickly
The figures include several 'anomalies'; There are at least 42 duplicate registrations in Cork, where exactly the same individuals are included twice. Along with this, there is one registration that does not expire at the end of the year
Another set of anomalies relate to New Memberships, of which 657 are listed. Many long term AAI members are listed as 'New Members', some of which have as much as 30 or 40 years unbroken AAI/BLE membership. One club has thirteen members wrongly listed as New Registrations
A small number of clubs have less than 10 registered members, and, therefore, club registration is not yet fully valid
Clubs are reminded that new members may 'try out' the club for a few weeks, after which they MUST be registered, or they will NOT be covered by Athletics Ireland insurance
Any athlete, coach, official, or any member acting in any capacity, who remains unregistered is NOT covered by Athletics Irelands insurance, for ANY purpose whatsoever, including training and/or competition
As of this evening, a further 763 (15.74%) have been registered since January 31st. 885 (15.77%) of these are listed as New Registrations, while, as stated earlier, several long-term members are listed as New Registrations

February 12th 2023
It was with great regret and sadness that we learnt of the death, yesterday, Sunday February 12th 2023 of our esteemed Vice-Chairman and past-Chairman Blarney-Inniscarra AC, Tim Ahern
The Officers, Officials and members of Cork Athletics County Board extend their condolences and deepest sympathies to the Ahern family; Tim's wife Catherine, children David, John and Timothy, grandson Ethan, and the extended Ahern and O'Connell families
Tim's lifetime contribution to athletics, particularly as a Technical Official at National and European levels, has been enormous and leaves a lasting legacy
May he Rest In Peace
Unexpectedly, but peacefully, at his residence, beloved husband of Catherine (nee O'Connell) and dear father of David, John and Timothy, grandfather of Ethan. Sadly missed by his loving family, brothers in law, sisters in law, relatives and friends
Requiescat in pace
Lying in repose at O'Callaghans Funeral Chapel, Ballyclough, on Wednesday from 5.30pm to 7pm followed by prayers. Reception into St. John the Baptist Church, Ballyclough, on Thursday for Requiem Mass at 12 noon. Funeral afterwards to the adjoining cemetery
Tim's passing was a big shock for all of us. He contributed immensely at all levels of the sport. His first love in Track & Field was the field events, where he coached and judged not only at Club and County but also at Munster and National level
For the past twelve years, Tim had been officiating at National level, as a member of the Athletics Ireland Competition Committee. Prior to that he was a member of the Athletics Ireland Technical Committee, with a combined term of approximately twenty five years at National level with BLE and AAI. He was a High Jump judge for countless years
We will all miss him so much
Sincere condolences on the passing of Tim Ahern, Cork Athletics County Board Vice Chair. He was a great servant to, and a stalwart of our sport. One of life's gentlemen, he will be missed

Yesterday, Sunday February 5th was a great day for athletics in Cork, when we saw not One, but Two Cork clubs - with both also from the East Cork region - compete at the ECCC (European Champion Clubs Cross-Country Championships) Championships, in Oropesa del Mar, Spain. In all, Ireland had eight teams involved; two in each category. The course was a somewhat convoluted one, on the sea-front in Oropesa del Mar, combining elements of grass and sand, with several wooden steeplechase-style jumps added for good measure
Leaders, with Avril Millerick on far right
First into action were the under 20 Women, with Youghal AC and Finn Valley AC representing Ireland. Youghal AC'c Avril Millerick was to the front over the first half of the 5.8km race, featuring in the top 10 throughout, before finishing in 11th place. Next for Youghal was Avril Cashman, in 16th place, with sister Alex Cashman in 25th place. A number mix-up led to the girll's places being reversed in the official results. Emma Landers, in 27th place. Each team's score was the combined total of the points for their first three placers, giving Youghal AC a total of 52 points, and 6th place. Finn Valley AC finished in 8th place, with 72 points, being led home by Eimear McCarroll (13th), Amy Byrne (24th), Sarah Bradley (35th) and Nuala Bose (60th). Sixteen (16) Teams finished
Next up were the under 20 Men, also running 5.8km, with Ireland represented by Nenagh Olympic AC and Ennis Track AC, finishing in 5th, on 45 points, and 6th, 60 points, places respectively. Yesterday's announcement, by the National Transport Authority (NTA), of €57M funding for walking and cycling infrastructure projects, involving over 130 Active Travel schemes across Cork City and County is very welcome, but brings several 'headaches' for Cork Athletics and the general running community, at least during the development stages.
The works include the development of segregated cycle lanes and widened footpaths, new walking and cycling bridges, and new pedestrian crossings. Three of the major developments are; €1.6m for upgrade works to the Marina Promenade; €4.5m for a new pedestrian and cycle route, from the Grange Road to Tramore Valley Park, including a bridge over the N40 South Ring Road; and €3.4m for the Ballinacurra to Midleton pedestrian and cycle route
Work on the Marina is scheduled to start in May next, with a projected completing date of May 2024. While this is welcome news, the downside is that the Marina will not be available for races/runs during the development. This means that Cork Athletics, organisers of the Cork Womens Mini-Marathon, sponsored by The Echo, must find a new route for this year's event, due to be held on Sunday September 17th
Artist's impression of the completed Marina
The Marina upgrade is long overdue, as the concrete running surface there is quite broken in places. The artistic impression of the finished product looks great, so we look forward to that
Artistic impression of pedestrian bridge over N40 South Ring
The other main Cork City project is the pedestrian bridge over the N40 South Ring Road, linking Grange/Frankfield with Tramore Valley Park. Indeed work is progressing well on the civil engineering works on both sides of the N40, so, hopefully the bridge crossing will be complete in the very near future. In addition, in the past two weeks, most of Tramore Valley Park has been resurfaced with smooth tarmac, and the main circuit around the Park has been widened, and drainage has been improved along the path
The town of Midleton, and the general East Cork area, has been a been a hive of athletic activity for several decades, so the Ballinacurra to Midleton pedestrian and cycle route should provide a boost to running there
