On Monday last, the famous Boston Marathon took place for the 127th time. Nowadays, travel to overseas marathons is commonplace, and Boston is undoubtedly on most runners ‘to-do’ list
It was all so different 40 years ago, but that certainly didn’t deter two determined Aghada men, Barry Moran and John Motherway, to set out on what was the experience of a lifetime.
Both share a common love and a lifetime of service to the GAA at local level, and further afield. This has ensued in a friendship that now encompasses half a century, but each followed a different route which would eventually lead to the streets of Boston in 1983
As Barry explains, for him it all started with a bet: “I was sitting in the mess room at IFI in Marino Point and there was an article in a magazine saying that Telly Salavas [actor who played Kojak] runs six miles a day in 36 minutes. And I said, in my own inimitable style, ‘anyone could do that’, and it started from there. I had four weeks to train, and they measured out a course between Lower Aghada and Whitegate, and I duly broke 36 minutes, I even broke 35 minutes with a time of 34:50.”
Then, a work-mate of his, Willie ‘Batty’ Cronin, who had served in the American army, and was an experienced runner, suggested they should try a marathon. Barry hadn’t even heard of a marathon at that stage, so he did a few long runs with Willie before heading off to the 1981 BLE National Marathon in Cork. This started and finished at the County Hall, comprising of 13 miles out to Farnanes and back – plus an extra 385 yards which proved to be his undoing
“That’s where I went wrong, we were going fine up to halfway, but on the way back Willie got cramp and had to drop out. I carried on and got to the 26-mile mark in around 3:25 and thought I was finished. So I sat down on the road, in the pouring rain. I was there for about three-quarters-of-an hour, until a fellow cycled out and said ‘come on in, we want to go home’. I had to get up then, and I finished in 4:18, the only time I was ever outside the four hours.”
John Motherway was born in Butlerstown, Barryroe, in 1943, and moved, with his late wife Anne, to Aghada, in the early 1960s, where he worked for Kosangas in nearby Whitegate. “One day, a fellow I knew came in to me and said he was running the Dublin Marathon. So I said I’d have a go myself, although I had never run on the road, but I was fairly fit from refereeing. As I was friends with Barry, I started off with him, even though he nearly killed me at first.”
The hard training certainly paid off as both crossed the line at that 1981 Dublin City Marathon a second apart, 3:35:27 and 3:35:28. The following year, John had improved to 3:10, and, by now, both were regulars on the local running scene. But it was a chance remark while out on a training run that provided the spark which led to Boston.
“We were out running in the middle of nowhere, when Barry said he was after reading in the Irish Runner magazine that the Boston Marathon was the oldest in the world. I said we should do that sometime and he agreed, as we both had relations in Boston. When I got home, I mentioned it to Anne, and she said ‘the sooner ye do that the better, because, God only knows if you’ll be running this year or next year’. So the following morning I rang my cousin in Boston, and that’s where it all started.”
With the marathon scheduled for April 18th, Barry and John traveled out a week before - and wouldn’t return until May 1st. The hype was already in full swing when they arrived, and the Aghada duo were soon part of it with an interview on the ‘Sound of Erin’ radio show. One of the presenters, John Varian, was from Cork, and they were also asked back the Saturday after the marathon, when John obliged with a rendition of ‘The Banks’.
“On the morning of the marathon, we were bussed out to Hopkinton where it begins,” says John. “We were there in a big high school, when a fellow came along and asked ‘where are you guys from?’ I said we’re from Ireland and he said we were the only fellows with a bit of common sense as we had our ‘street clothes’ on. It was freezing at that time but we were lucky enough with the conditions later on.”
That Boston Marathon of 1983, which had a total of 5,372 finishers, proved to be a historic occasion. Joan Benoit – who would go on to win the inaugural women’s Olympic marathon the following year at Los Angeles – ran a world’s best time of 2:22:43. Greg Meyer took first in the men’s race in 2:09:00, making it the last time the host country has provided both winners on the same day.
“The crowds were unbelievable,” recalls John. “I suppose the only thing you’d be conscious of is getting carried away, and not finishing, after going all the way out there, if you were in Cork or Dublin it wouldn’t be so bad.”
“There were two things that happened to me that certainly gave me a great lift,” explained Barry. “Firstly, when we came to the top of Heartbreak Hill they rang a bell to say you’ve conquered Heartbreak Hill. It’s not just one hill but a series of three hills. And just after the bell, a roar went up – ‘C’mon Aghada’! It was Joe Brice, who I had gone to school with and it gave me a tremendous lift. How he picked us out of the thousands, it was unreal.”
Joe Brice, a native of Aghada and a member of Midleton AC, was an Irish international discus thrower, with five senior national titles to his credit. He had gone to the University of Lowell in Massachusetts on an athletics scholarship in 1976, the first of a number of Fr Liam Kelleher’s athletes to take the scholarship route
However, Barry’s uplift was short lived: “I was going very well and on for a time around 2:50. When I came down from Heartbreak Hill, there was a fellow with an Irish flag and I veered over to him and said ‘keep your flag flying’, and was that a mistake. He jumped up on my back with excitement and next thing I was on the ground with one of the knees cut, and that ended my marathon, although I carried on to finish in 3:10:14.”
John crossed the line in an official 3:28:10, and he had an extra incentive over the final few yards. “I was coming down and could see the line when there was an announcement that there was two minutes left for official finishers, you’d get no medal if you didn’t break 3:30.”
With a recall that’s as clear as if it was yesterday, it’s with a mixture of nostalgia and gratitude that both look back at that eventful trip of four decades ago. “I suppose the great thing is that we stayed together over there with my cousin, it was like home from home,” says John. “And it all happened totally by accident; I didn’t even know there was a marathon in Boston.”
Leaving the last word to Barry, he admits that all the credit must go to John’s late wife, Anne. “We wouldn’t have gone only for her. She said ‘if ye want to go, go now’. And be mindful, she had four small kids at that stage, and to tell her husband to go away and run the Boston Marathon was a fair thing to say
“But off we went, and what a time we had.”

The bridge being lifted into position over the N40 South Ring Road (Photo A. Hardiman)
The new Pedestrian Bridge over the N40 South Ring Road, linking Tramore Valley Park to the new Frankfield Park, by Vernon Mount, was lifted into position overnight on Thursday night last, April 20th/21st
The bridge was built at Thompson Engineering, in Carlow. The operation, which necessitated calm weather conditions, involved complete closure of the N40 South Ring Road, between Mahon Point and the Kinsale Roundabout.

The bridge crossing both sides of the N40, links Grange-Frankfield to Tramore Valley Park, and will provide a pedestrian and cycle route into and around the Parks on both sides of the N40, along with a 'short-cut' running/walking/cycling route into/out of Cork City
Bridge being hoisted into place (Photo A. Hardiman)
Cork City Council says "The Grange Road to Tramore Valley Park Pedestrian and Cycle Link consists of a pedestrian and cycle path from the Grange Road down the Valley and into the Tramore Valley Park via an overbridge over the N40 and is currently under construction with an expected completion date of September 2023. The path will be 4m wide and circa 995m long and includes a bridge over the N40 South Ring Road
The bridge consists of two sections. The smaller section to the south of the N40 spanning the Harbour and City Watermain and the main section spanning the N40 which is approximately 46m in length, 4m in width and is of “Bow Arch” construction. It will form an iconic and highly visible element of the scheme and will become a landmark for future generations"
Bridge Naming
What should the bridge be called? Cork City Council is inviting submission on the bridge name, so if you have ideas, now's you chance!

1. Entry Fee for individual events is €2 per event. Relay Teams €5 per team
2. Athletes participating in Under 13 and above events are restricted to two events per day. The only exception is where an athlete selects the Triple Jump as one of their nominated events on Day 2. In that case a third event that day will be permitted. For health and safety reasons, athletes are not permitted to enter both the discus and javelin as they are being held on the same day for this year only
3. There is no limit to the number of events an individual athlete may enter in the Under 9 to Under12 age categories
4. Entries must be made using the online Entry4Sport system. Separate events will be created for each day of the championships. Entries will close at 23:59pm on the Tuesday prior to each day of the championship. No late entries will be accepted. Clubs should familiarise themselves with the Entry4Sport system and submit entries for day 1 in advance of the cut off point so that any issues can be remediated
5. On the day of competition Club numbers will be given to a club official/coach/parent who will be responsible for distributing the correct number to their club athletes. The designated person will have to sign for all of the numbers. Individual numbers will not be given out to an athlete or parent
6. In individual events, athletes are confined to their own age group
7. In relays, athletes may move up 1 age group, but 2 of the 4 athletes running must be the correct age, except in Under 17 4x400 relay, where ALL athletes MUST be Under 17
8. Only those born in 2015 may compete Under 9 events
9. No new entries will be accepted on the day of competition
Points to Note
1. All athletes MUST be registered Athletics Ireland Members
2. ONLY competing athletes and officials are permitted on the track and infield
3. Athletes MUST wear Club singlets. Numbers are to be worn on front of singlet, (except pole vault competition) 5mm spikes only
4. Field Events to be held in the Mardyke will commence at 10:15am. Practice jumps/throws for the first age groups must be completed before the starting time. Competition starts 10:30am sharp. Adequate time will be allowed for practice jumps and throws for each age group thereafter
5. Field Events to be held at An Riocht will commence with the hammer at 9:30 am. Practice throws must be completed before 9:20am
6. Once a competition has started, no practice jump/throw will be allowed
7. It is the responsibility of club coaches to ensure that their athletes are technically competent at the disciplines for which they are being entered. Officials may stop any athlete they deem unable to compete in a safe manner
8. In Shot, Hammer, Discus, Javelin/Turbo Javelin, Long Jump & Triple Jump, each athlete will be allowed 3 attempts
9. High Jump opening heights, as per Munster Competition Booklet (see appendix), with the bar rising by 5cm, until 3 athletes remain, then by 3cm
10. Athletes are NOT permitted to carry or use electronic devices in the competition area at any time. (Earphones, ear pods, I-phones, smart phones, tablets etc)
11. Photographers: All cameras must be registered on the way into the track, in accordance with Athletics Ireland Photography and Film Guidelines
12. Please respect all property at both the Mardyke and An Riocht venues
13. Clubs are responsible for keeping their areas clean of litter. Please bring your litter away with you. There is a substantial clean-up charge levied on Cork Athletics, if the venue is littered. Please ‘Pull’ anyone you see littering the venue – if the venue is littered, we will all ‘Tarnished with the One Brush!’
14. Dogs - Dogs are not permitted inside the grounds of either the Mardyke or An Riocht, with the sole exception of REGISTERED Guide and/or Assistance Dogs

The programme of events may be brought forward or amended on the day depending on participation numbers and weather conditions
Note from Juvenile Competition Secretary Michael Flynn (Added April 24th)
"Currently there is a rule in place that will not allow an athlete to be entered in both the discus and javelin on day 4
I am in the process of removing that rule, so if you have athletes that wish to enter both, you can do so
This will be updated during the week. I am also hoping to add a warning message to advise parents and coaches that Cork Athletics typically does not have both of these events on the same day, as we are conscious that athletes are still developing both physically, and in learning the disciplines, in particular discus for U14/15. Coaches and parents should take into account that their athletes are putting strong forces on immature muscles
If an athlete wants to enter both events please hold off for a few days
If you have parents entering athletes please pass this message on to them"

As has been done for the past number of years, this is an attempt to compile a ranking list over the popular 10-mile distance for men (under 55:00) and women (under 65:00)
The list, from January to April 10th, shows the time (gun), name/club/category, the race and finishing position, along with the date. Where an athlete appears more than once, just the surname is used after the initial listing
Although both leading times – Yared Derese 49:04 and Aoife Cooke 54:50 – are both slightly slower than last year’s fastest at this stage (48:40 by Jake O’Regan and 54:19 by Cooke), the overall standard is higher
Last year, up to the end of March, 61 times for men appeared under 55 minutes along with 55 for women under 65 minutes. This year, the corresponding figures are 84 for men and 62 for women
Dungarvan, with 22 under 55:00 (up from 16 last year), saw the highest standard race amongst the men with the next highest being Trim on 13
The West Waterford race also saw the most women under 65:00 with 15 performances surpassing the 12 at Trim, last year’s leader with the same amount
Any additions or corrections are welcome and can be made on the comments section wherever this list appears and will be included in the next updated edition in around three months time

The bridge is currently sitting alongside the N40 South Ring Road
The first section of the new Pedestrian Bridge over the N40 South Ring Road, linking Tramore Valley Park to the new Frankfield Park, by Vernon Mount, was delivered to the site on Wednesday night last, April 6th
Built at Thompson Engineering, in Carlow, the bridge, which is now sitting on the ground at the eastern side of the N40 site, will be erected into its final location, during a night-time operation, later this month

The bridge crossing both sides of the N40, will link Grange-Frankfield to Tramore Valley Park, and will provide a pedestrian and cycle route into and around the Parks on both sides of the N40, along with a 'short-cut' running/walking/cycling route into/out of Cork City
It will form an iconic and highly visible element of the scheme and will become a landmark for future generations
Elements of the bridge will be delivered to site over the coming weeks and its installation is planned for mid April"

The bridge will, on completion, have stairs and cycle ramps on both sides of the bridge. Works on these have been ongoing for the past few months, and are well developed
