Cork Athletics Registration Figures - March 31st 2023

Record Cork Athletics Registration Figures - March 31st  2023

cork athletics registrations march 31st 2023

March end-of-month registrations for Cork Athletics stand at a record 6,893

The figures still include several 'anomalies'; There are at least 12 exact duplicate registrations in Cork, where exactly the same individuals are included twice, and a total of 29 duplicates overall.  Along with this, there is one registration that does not expire at the end of the year

Another set of anomalies relate to New Memberships, of which 1400 are listed.  Many long term AAI members are listed as 'New Members', some of which have as much as 30 or 40 years unbroken AAI/BLE membership. One club has twenty three members wrongly listed as New Registrations

There are now 55 fully registered clubs

Clubs are reminded that new members may 'try out' the club for a few weeks, after which they MUST be registered, or they will NOT be covered by Athletics Ireland insurance

Any athlete, coach, official, or any member acting in any capacity, who remains unregistered is NOT covered by Athletics Irelands insurance, for ANY purpose whatsoever, including training and/or competition

After Nomination/Selection

4.9 All nominated athletes must be cleared as “Fit to Compete” by Athletics Ireland medical team. All nominations are to remain conditional until proof of fitness to compete is confirmed

4.10 An athlete who enters the Team Ireland Camp and/or the 2023 European Youth Olympic Festival village will be subject to an injury evaluation/assessment by the championship Team Management staff. The injury evaluation/assessment will be carried out by the OFI/EYOF Medical Team

4.10.1 If as a result of such injury evaluation/assessment the Team Physio, Team Management staff, or Team Leader/Manager consider an athlete does not have the standard of fitness or is otherwise not in condition to compete due to injury at a level appropriate to the event(s) for which they have been selected, the Team Leader/Manager will have the sole discretion to recommend the withdrawal of the athlete from the competition to the Chef de Mission

4.10.2 An athlete who is found to have breached any Athletics Ireland, OFI, World Athletics or other relevant code of conduct may be withdrawn from the competition or have their accreditation withdrawn on the recommendation of the Team Leader/Manager to the Chef de Mission Nomination Meeting

Update on Marina Upgrade - March 2023

Marina Upgrade Works to Commence Later in June

marina development 5 march 2023

Major works on Cork's Marina were originally planned to commence in later May, however, at this point in time, it looks like that will be late June, at earliest. This will ease worries about routing of the Cork City Marathon and Half-Marathon, which will be held on Sunday June 4th, along with Athletics Ireland's Grant Thornton 5k Corporate Challenge, which is currently planned for Tuesday June 13th, but is likely to move, due to being held so close to a BHAA event, in the same location, on the following day

The Marina redevelopment is great news for both the athletic/running community, and the community at large, as the finished product will improve the quality and ambiance of the area. The pedestrianisation of the Marina has led to a massive increase in people using the scenic riverside amenity

The downside is that it is now though that completion will now take at least 12 months, and likely 18 months. Let us all hope that weather and work conditions lead to an earlier completion date

The width of the new pedestrian path, which combines the existing roadway and footpath, is 6m, a significant increase. As can be seen from the artistic impression, the existing dirt road outside Lee Rowing Club, will also be tarmaced. This road will be 5m wide, and will be the vehicular access to Páirc Úi Caoimh, and Lee Rowing Club.  Having this road paved will also increase the race/running route options

The Marina upgrade is long overdue, as the concrete running surface there is quite broken in places. The plans show lighting along the path [Currently, the Marina is unlit and I have memories, many years ago, of doing speedwork there in the dark, hitting an unseen branch and nearly going 'ar#e over t*t'! That put a stop to speedwork there!] The artistic impression of the finished product looks great, so we look forward to that

Monaghan Road Realignment, New Residential Development & New Access Road

In the coming months, Monaghan Road is expected to be realigned, with the road to go through the former coal depot, by 'Marquee Road', while Monaghan Road will remain open, this will obviously disrupt races in the immediate area. further disruption, both short and long term, will come from new residential development, including access roadway, on the Marquee site

Assembly of N40 South Ring Road Bridge in its final stages at Thompson Engineering, Carlow

tvp south ring bridgeArtistic impression of pedestrian bridge over N40 South Ring

The other main Cork City project is the pedestrian bridge over the N40 South Ring Road, linking Grange/Frankfield with Tramore Valley Park. Work on the access ramps almost complete, with much of the shuttering for the concret ramp on the Tramore Valley Park side being removed in the past day or two. The bridge assembly is currently being assembled at Thompson's Engineering works, in Carlow. As can be seen in the two photos above, things are at an advanced stage.  A release, today, from Cork City Council, suggests that the Bridge may be in place in late April, however Cork Athletics has recently heard that it may be a short  while after that, and opening may be affected by works on the Park on the Frankfield side

In any case, we can look forward, shortly, to opening up a whole new running environment.  It will also provide a great opportunity for those living in the Grange/Frankfield area to run/cycle/walk to and from work, and the City

Tramore Valley Park - Works on Paths

In recent weeks, there has been a lot of welcome improvement works on the paths inside the Park.  Almost the entire outer path has been tarmaced to a high standard, with just a very short section, by Half Moon Lane, remaining to be done. This is likely to happen next week.  Next week's work will see the final 20 or 30m being tarmaced, with the Council access road being raised just at the turn, both as a traffic calming measure (not that there's much!), and also to provide a pedestrian crossing point. Then finished product remains to be seen, but, with the sharp turn, will the ramp be an impediment, particularly in view of the turn, in races. Other works this week included progress on the new tarmac path on the eastern side of the pitches.  About half of this path was tarmaced earlier today, with more in progress.

There are two other paths across the site, one - the shorter one - is of reasonably good condition, while the other, which goes across the top - and is used by some for hillwork - is quite a rough dirt track, literally. Neither of these is likely to be resurfaced any time soon. The short one close to the Parkrun start is in good condition, while the one that goes up over the hill is, literally, years away, as the ground will be 'settling' for years to come, so isn't suitable for permanent surfacing

There will be separate men’s and women’s team competitions for Senior, Novice and Over 35 with 4 athletes to count on a team. In the Over 45+ women, the Over 50+ men and the Over 65+ three athletes will count on the team

Cork City Marathon 10k Route Revealed

Cork City Marathon 10k Route 2023 - Flat as a Pancake!

8:45am, Sunday June 4th 2023

cork city marathon 10k route 2023

Route of Cork City Marathon 10k 2023

After much speculation about the route, over the past few months, on social media, and in the general running community, the route has finally been disclosed and will undoubtably have been worth the wait ...Its Flat as a Pancake!

It will Start and Finish in Patrick Street, at the same Start and Finish Lines as the Full Marathon, so 10k runners will enjoy the complete 'Pana' Cork Marathon experience

This course was measured by John Quigley, AIMS/World Athletics Grade A International Measurer

Start of Cork City Marathon 2022, at Savoy/Maylor St

The 10k will start at 8:45am, 30 minutes after the Marathon, which moves to the earlier start of 8:15am

Route Map of first 3 Miles of 10k

Using the same start line as last year, by the Savoy/Maylor St, the race heads up Patrick St, turning onto Grand Parade, and immediately turning right, onto Washington Street, continuing along Lancaster Quay, and out Western Road, passing the 1 Mile mark between College Gates and Gaol Cross, before turning right at the Sacred Heart Church

sacred heart turn mardyke sacred heart end
Towards the end of Western Road, the course heads right at AIB  Almost immediately after the Sacred Heart Church the course turns right again onto the Mardyke

From here to the Finish, much of the course is over streets that are covered by the Marathon itself, either at the start, or at the end

After the Sacred Heart, there is an immediate right turn onto the Mardyke. At the city end of the Mardyke, the course turns onto the Cumann na mBan walk, passing the 2 Mile mark just after the turn and before the Bridge.

end mardyke

Towards the city end of the Mardyke, the route turns left onto the Cumann na mBan Walk

It continues along the riverside Cumann na mBan walk, coming out onto North Mall, and continues directly ahead onto Pope's Quay, passing North Main Street on the way

The course now follows the Full Marathon route for the next two and a half miles.  The 3 Mile mark, just before John Buckley Sports, is reached just before Christy Ring Bridge.  At Christy Ring Bridge, the course turns left, proceeding out to Lady's Well, where it turns left and immediately right, onto Watercourse Road

The Blackpool section of the course

Turning left onto O'Connell St, and immediate right onto Great William O'Brien Street. It continues directly ahead, passing Blackpool Church, on the right, as far as Brocklesby Street, where there is a sharp hair-pin turn

From there the runners head back towards the city, along Commons Road, and into Blackpool village, where it heads right, along Watercourse Road, as far as Maddens Buildings

Here, the route turns left, then does a U-Turn around a traffic island, and back in towards the city centre

The Maddens Buildings Loop

The course does a U-Turn around this traffic island (the turn from Maddens Buildings can be seen in the distance on the right, adjacent to the white van)

Here there is an 'S Bend', with the course turning left towards Blackpool and, almost immediately, doing a 180 degree turn, around a traffic island, and again heading in towards the city centre. Note: this 'S Bend' was necessary to make up the distance, ensuring that the 10k and Marathon Starts and Finishes coincided

After the S Bend, the race heads back in to Christy Ring Bridge, where it turns left onto Camden Quay, crossing over onto Patrick's Quay

At Brian Boru Bridge it turns right, over the bridge and right again onto Merchant's Quay

Turning from Brian Boru Bridge onto Merchant's Quay, by the Bus Station

From here it continues directly ahead, past Patrick's Bridge and on to Lavitt's Quay and Kyrl's Quay, before turning right onto North Main Street

From here the finishes of all three races; Marathon, Half-Marathon and 10K, are exactly the same: Proceeding to the junction with Washington Street and Grand Parade, followed by the finish down Patrick St

Overall this is probably one of the flattest courses one could find on the planet, so should prove a very attractive event with everyone, from the serious athlete, to those who simply want to savour the experience of Famous Cork Marathon Finish

The route of the Cork City Marathon 10k 2023 was finally signed off yesterday, with Gardai, Emergency Services and all the other  significant parties agreeing to the route and traffic management plans, following several months of discussions and problem-solving, with several different route options being tabled and discarded, for a variety of reasons

The reason for the early starts for the 10k and Marathon is to ensure that essential city centre routes are reopened in time for increasing cross-city traffic later in the morning

Cork City Marathon 10k Route 2023 - Course Elevation Profile

Don't be put off in any way, by the apparent 'hills' in the elevation profile above. This course is as flat as you can get.  Google (and MapMyRun) has been 'fooled' by the presence of buildings and trees along the course.  The course starts at 4m elevation, on Patrick St, and, obviously, finishes at 4m, more or less, as the finish line is only 93m further up Patrick St. Along the way, there are a few very slight rises, with a total elevation rise (and fall!) over the entire 10k route of some 36m, and all of these small rises are gradual. You couldn't ask for a flatter course!

There will be separate men’s and women’s team competitions for Senior, Novice and Over 35 with 4 athletes to count on a team. In the Over 45+ women, the Over 50+ men and the Over 65+ three athletes will count on the team
