The Athletics Ireland AGM will take place on Saturday April 27th 2024
Late last week, the AGM Syllabus, along with AAI and AAE Accounts for 2023 were emailed by Athletics Ireland. A number of clubs appeared not to have received these, however, it appears that, in several instances, the email went to the recipient's Spam Folder

The AGM Syllabus contains a number of motions which will significantly affect all clubs, along with Divisions and the County Board.
These motions will be discussed at our next County Board meeting, which will be held in the Meeting Rooms, at MTU Track, at 8pm, on Wednesday April 10th. All clubs are advised to attend
Along with discussion of these motions, the County Board is looking for nominations for County Delegates to attend the AAI AGM. The Board has arranged a bus to take the delegates to and from the AGM. Cork is entitled to 22 voting delegates, and it is critical that we fill our delegate quota
The final page of the AGM Syllabus is reproduced below, and the Full AGM Syllabus is also available for download, for anyone who has not received a copy.

ADMINISTRATION
Motion 6. The increase of the registration fee from the 1/1/2025 to Juvenile €20 and Senior €25
Rationale:
• Applying the split of Juvenile members at €15/Senior €20 to 2024 and assuming we maintain 70k members (no growth) then we would receive approx. €300k extra in nett revenue in 2025.
• Current reg fee is Juvenile €15 and Senior €20 since the 1/1/2019. Note inflation during this period has been approx. 20%.
• For comparison, Swim Ireland senior fee is €49 going to €54, Cycling Ireland senior fee €136, Gymnastics Ireland senior fee €70.
• This increase will be used to cover higher costs across the business as a result of inflation.
BOARD
Motion 6. Amendment
LOUTH
The increase of the registration fee from 1/1/2025 to Juvenile 20 euro and Senior 25 euro, this increase to also cover €1.50 per member for Directors & Officers Insurance.
Motion 7. The increase of the registration fee for Juvenile and Senior members by €1.50 from the 1/1/2025 to cover the cost of Directors & Officers insurance
Rationale: Recommendation from Congress 2023
The cost to establish a group Directors & Officers insurance scheme for all Clubs, County Boards and Provinces is in the region of €100,000. This insurance cover is highly recommended for all Clubs, County Boards and Provinces. This insurance covers the cost of claims and settlement amounts made against your Club and the club's directors and managers, officers or key decision makers for alleged wrongful acts e.g. misleading statement, incorrect decision making, libel/slander, breach of duty, breach of trust or neglect. As an officer of the club you have unlimited personal liability. This policy would therefore protect the assets of the individual in the event of a claim.
The €1.50 fee increase proposed in this motion will be in addition to the €5 proposed in Motion 6.
BOARD
Motion 8. The increase of the Club Affiliation fee to €500 from the 1/1/2025.
Rationale: Recommendation from Congress 2023
This motion will be withdrawn by the Board if motion 7. is passed. This motion offers an alternative mechanism to establish the Directors & Officers group insurance scheme
The increase of the club affiliation fee from the current €150 to €500 from the 1/1/2025. This increase covers the group cost of Directors and Officers liability cover for all AAI affiliated Clubs. This is a group insurance scheme and will save clubs who are currently purchasing this cover independently up to €200 each as the individual cost per club is approximately €550. All Clubs should be availing of this cover to protect their coaches and club officers
BOARD
Motion 9. Athletics Ireland Affiliated Clubs, County Boards and Provincial Councils must apply for an AAI permit through the approved AAI system portal when organising an event (Recreation, Road, Track & Field & Cross Country) for their own Club, County or Province or on behalf of a third party
Rationale:
This motion is to clarify that all Athletics Ireland affiliated Clubs, Counties & Provinces must operate using the approved AAI system portal to obtain a permit. Note this ensures all appropriate events are recorded for insurance purposes for example all road races, County and Provincial Cross Country and Track & Field events.
Note club trainings, club and county leagues, development events, squad trainings do not require a permit. All National events are recorded separately and directly with the insurer and hence do not require County Board approval. However, all National event dates will be shared with respective County Boards to prevent date clashes.
BOARD
Motion 9. Amendment
Any unit of the Association, Club, Co Board or Province requiring an event permit on their own behalf or for another organisation must use the Association approved portal system
Rationale:
The wording 'organising an event (recreation, road, track & field and cross country)' describes practically everything a club and County Board does. An event can be used to cover every small club and county race, club and county leagues, development events (that word again) squad training etc that are the day to day life of our clubs - and can even include schedule training sessions. To have to apply for a permit for each one is not possible for our already overstretched club secretaries.

Carraig na bhFear AC's Tribute to Noreen Murphy
Noreen Murphy was a founding member of Carraig na bhFear Athletic Club having taken up the position of secretary as part of the inaugural club committee back in September 1980. A driving force ever since, Noreen fulfilled many roles within the club including Chairperson for many years and latterly Club President
Noreen’s involvement in athletics in Cork for 40 years culminated in a particularly proud moment in January 2004 when she was elected the first female Chairperson of Cork Athletics County Board
Noreen brought her can-do attitude to all aspects of club activity and was central to the Carraig na bhFear AC hosting the National Juvenile Cross Country Championships in 1991, the Junior and Senior Inter-County Cross Country Championships in 1999 and the National Intermediate and Masters’ Championships in 2006
For decades Noreen stood on the fields of Colaiste an Chroi Naofa in all types of weather coaching club athletes, fostering a love for the sport and guiding young girls and boys to success. Noreen proudly oversaw many huge triumphs for the club including County, Provincial and National Cross Country successes, US scholarships for her own daughter Michelle, Valerie Lynch and Patricia Dorgan, and in recent years a flurry of Track and Field achievements
Some of Noreen’s last outings with the club included a visit to the Mardyke in Spring 2023, when she attended the inaugural Noreen Murphy Challenge Cup between Carraig na bhFear AC and Cork City AC, and last summer Noreen was on hand to witness a new generation of young athletes being introduced to the sport through the club’s Athletics Ireland Summer Camp
From the messages that have poured in over the past few days it is evident what a hugely positive impact Noreen had on so many lives. Her undoubted contribution to the sport of athletics is widely accepted but notably it was for her kindness that most people remembered her
A life lived to the fullest, Noreen’s significant legacy will continue to inspire us all

As has been compiled for the past number of years, the following is a ranking list over the popular 10-mile distance for men (under 55:00) and women (under 65:00)
This list, from January to April 25th, shows the time (gun), name/club/category, the race and finishing position, along with the date. Where an athlete appears more than once, just the surname is used after the initial listing
Last year over the same period, 62 times for women were recorded under 65 minutes. This year, the corresponding figure is two less at 60. However, there is a more alarming fall-off for the men with just 47 inside 55 minutes compared to 84 in 2023
Remarkably, no man has broken 50 minutes in any of the races so far in 2024. For the past two years the fastest at this stage were Yared Derese (49:04) in 2023) and Jake O’Regan (48:40) in 2022
Likewise, the fastest amongst the women is 56:23 by Ann-Marie McGlynn at Trim compared to Aoife Cooke’s leading marks of 54:50 (2023) and 54:19 (2022)
Trim, second last year to Dungarvan, had the most women under 65:00 at 17 while Mallow overtook the West Waterford race with a total of 11 men under 55:00
Any additions or corrections are welcome and can be made on the comments section wherever this list appears and will be included in the next updated edition published in the autumn

Irish Women's 4x400m team, Munich, 2022: Sophie Becker, Phil Healy, Rhasidat Adeleke and Sharlene Mawdsley
Phil Healy, Bandon AC has been selected on a very strong Irish Women's 4 x 400m team for the World Athletics Relay Championships, in Nassau, The Bahamas, early next month. Speaking to Cork Athletics, at the Cork Athletics International Awards night, last February, Phil said that this event was a key target in the team's efforts to qualify automatically for the 4 x 400m at the Paris Olympics, in July
Athletics Ireland Release
Athletics Ireland has selected an eleven strong team for the upcoming World Athletics Relays which take place in Nassau, the Bahamas on Saturday May 4th and Sunday May 5th
An Irish Mixed 4x400m and Women’s 4x400m team will take to the track at the Thomas Robinson Stadium aiming to secure all-important qualification for the Olympic Games that take place in Paris in just over one hundred days
The top fourteen teams in each event qualify for the Olympics
Rhasidat Adeleke (Tallaght AC) will be part of both Mixed and Women’s teams. The 21-year-old Dubliner had a memorable 2023 outdoor season culminating in a fourth place finish in the final of the 400m at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest last August
Sharlene Mawdsley (Newport AC) is another athlete who will be hoping to make a positive impact on both team’s quest for Olympic qualification. Mawdsley anchored the Mixed and Women’s relay teams in Budapest last summer and more recently was part of the Women’s team that finished fifth in the final of the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow in March
Thomas Barr (Ferrybank AC) clocked the fastest 400m time by an Irish man indoors this year, with his 46.88 effort achieved at the Track and Field Live Meeting in Abbotstown in early February. The hurdles specialist will hope to produce another stellar relay performance in Nassau.
Cillin Greene (Galway City Harriers), Jack Raftery (Donore Harriers) and Christopher O’Donnell (North Sligo AC) are also all travelling and will be vying for a spot on the team
Phil Healy (Bandon AC), Sophie Becker (Raheny Shamrock AC) and Roisin Harrison (Emerald AC) were all part of the Women’s relay that finished fifth in Glasgow and all three are included in both squads
Christian Malcolm, Athletics Ireland Performance Sprints Lead commented, on the selection: “We go into this championships with real momentum, and a consistent track record of performance delivery from this group of athletes at global championships, with 5th at this year’s World Indoors, 6th and 8th at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest last year and other strong results stretching back to 2021 World Relays. It’s the key Olympic qualifier for relays, so competition for a place in Paris will be intense, but we feel this squad is well placed to progress.”

It's been a busy few weeks in Ballintotis as the local committee advance plans for this year's 4 MIle Road Race, which is set to bring huge crowds to the picturesque venue this Thursday. Bad weather has obviously hampered plans for a number of weeks, but once again the local community have come to the fore in various ways
This year, all participants are asked to please take special note of the traffic arrangements and the location of CAR PARKS, some of which have changed from previous years, In particular, motorists travelling from the Midleton direction, should be aware that their access point to the venue will for the most part of the evening, be at the CASTLEMARTYR SIDE of Loughaderra Lake. There is no right turn from the Main Road to Race HQ
A special appeal is sent to everybody to please make a big effort to carpool and because of the large entry, please arrive early. Car parks will open at 5.30pm
2024 will see the Ballintotis Race incorporate the County Road Championships for the first time ever, which will add an extra dimension to this huge sporting and social occasion
Some great action is expected in the race itself with many well known names in the line up. Whilst the majority of entries have now been received online, limited walk-in entries will also be taken from 1pm up until 7.30pm in Ballintotis on race day. Number collection is available at the same time and entries/number collection is also open from 5pm to 8pm on Wednesday evening.
We urge as many people as possible to make use of these extended times for number pick up
Before all the race action at 8pm, it's a 6pm start for the community walk, with refreshments served immediately afterwards for walkers on their return to the Community Centre
Runners will receive their buff once they cross the finish line, whilst refreshments as usual will be served in Ballintotis Community Centre. Prize giving will take place in the marquess at the front of the Community Centre at approx 9:10pm.
Looking forward to seeing you all in Ballintotis on Thursday evening.

With little over twenty three weeks to go to the big day, entries wil open soon for the 5km 43rd Echo Cork Women's Mini-Marathon. The Echo are Flagship Sponsors, for the 42nd consecutive year
The Echo Mini-Marathon Flyer 2023
Cork Athletics, organisers of the Mini-Marathon, are currently monitoring developments along the proposed route. The general start area, along with the initial stages of the route, are in the early stages of exciting new developments that will revitalise these areas over the next few years, housing several thousand in the Docklands/Centre Park Road and former Marquee sites
This year's proposed route will start in the Docklands/Victoria Road area
A smooth and fast start is planned for everyone, this year's Mini-Marathon will again feature Time Zones
The Time zones will be marked on the road leading to the Start Line
Runners and walkers should enter the Time Zone most appropriate to their own target finish time. If all participants adhere to this, it should make for a streamlined start and a pleasant experience for everyone, runner and walker alike. The image above gives an indication of the zones, though the view foreshortens them, making some of the zones appear smaller than they actually will be. Each zone will be sized to adequately cater for the estimated numbers (based on previous year's Mini-Marathon finish times) in each section
We hope that the changes introduced, in recent years, to the Mini-Marathon will continue to attract club runners in large numbers. The time zones has enabled all runners to get straight into their stride pretty much straight away
Cork Athletics is a not-for-profit voluntary organisation. The Officers, Committee members, and others who help to run the business of the Board, are all volunteers, who give their time and expertise, free of charge, for the benefit of the athletes and the sport
