Cork City Lord Mayor, Cllr. Mick Finn presents Alex O'Shea with a memento to honour his epic achievement
Cork's running fireman, Alex O'Shea, a member of St Finbarr's AC, recently completed an epic and gruelling 32 Marathons in 32 counties, in just 16 days, in aid of the Irish Guide Dogs. The purpose of Alex's endurance feat was to raise awareness of Irish Guide Dogs and to raise much needed funds for the charity.
Alex raised a stunning €31,438.13 in the process, with donations still flowing in, was honoured with a Civic Reception, hosted by Lord Mayor, Cllr. Mick Finn, in Cork's City Hall, on Thursday November 7th 2018.

As of 4pm today, Thursday November 8th, entries had already reached 10, 725 and are expected to exceed 11,000 by tonight. 2019 Entries opened on November 1st and places are filling at a phenomenal rate. The next entry threshold, 14,000, is expected to sell out next week, after which the current entry fee of €80 will rise to €90. The 20,000 threshold is expected to be reached well before Christmas.
This is critical for anyone thinking of entering the Athletics Ireland National Marathon Championship. In short, when the 20,000 limit is reached, That's It!! ...except ONLY for ELITES. There are no reserved places for Athletics Ireland members. If you miss out on the 20,000 limit, there is no 'back-door', unless you're lucky enough to be of Elite Status
Club List and Wave Starts for Championship Participants
Cork Athletics County Board is to write to Athletics Ireland about 'hiccups' for the 2018 Championship, where some Cork clubs (along with clubs in other counties) were not listed in the drop-down on the entry form, and many Championship participants were assigned to Waves 2, 3 or 4, rather than Wave 1, to ensure that these issues are resolved for 2019

October end-of-month registrations for Cork Athletics stand at 8,338, a new registrations record for Cork, surpassing the 2017 year-end figure of 8,264, with two months yet to go until the end of the year.
Fifty six of Cork's fifty seven registered clubs have registered athletes, leaving just one club, Ballinacurra Villagers AC yet to register a single athlete - and the club registered just a single athlete in 2017, so the club's future as an Athletics Ireland registered club looks to be in doubt.
Clubs are reminded that, even though most of the year has passed, all new members MUST be registered, or they will NOT be covered by Athletics Ireland insurance
Any athlete, coach, official, or any member acting in any capacity, who remains unregistered is NOT covered by Athletics Irelands insurance, for ANY purpose whatsoever, including training and/or competition.
Clubs are urged to register athletes without further delay
Athletics Ireland are likely to issue the October end-of-month National registration figures in the coming days. Standing of Cork clubs in the various Top 50 National standings will be added to this page
Leevale AC and Bandon AC head the table, both clubs exceeding the 600 mark, leading the other clubs by a significant distance. Five clubs: Togher AC, Ballymore Cobh AC, Midleton AC, Youghal AC and North Cork AC all have over 300 registered members.
A total of sixeen (16) clubs have over 200 registrations, while a further twelve (12) clubs have now exceeded 100 registered members, making a total of 28 clubs with 100 or more registerd members, so 50% of registered clubs currently have more than 100 registered members.

Cork Athletics wants to field full, strong, squads in all events - please help us do that!
This article, by John Walshe, appeared in the Evening Echo on Friday November 2nd 2018
Donie Walsh makes a splash!
As Lizzie Lee crossed the finish line on Sunday last in Dublin to claim her first national marathon title, the first to congratulate her with a warm embrace was coach Donie Walsh.
However, 40 years ago this month it was the Leevale legend himself who was making the headlines when winning his fourth Cork County BLE cross-country championship over a challenging seven-and-half mile course at Bandon.
This was somewhat the end of an era as far as the then 30-year-old Walsh was concerned as it marked his final Cork senior title, the fourth victory adding to a similar number of BLE national championships he had won over the country.
But there was still one significant performance remaining four months in the future – an achievement on a par with the second place that Walsh had attained eight years before when he finished runner-up at the NCAA championships in Virginia, just eight seconds behind the iconic idol of that era, Steve Prefontaine.
Before Walsh embarked on a four-year scholarship to the famed Villanvona University, he had already featured amongst the medals at Cork County level. In 1967, at the age of 18, he was runner-up to Matt Murphy from Rising Sun in the last of the old NACAI championships which took place at Glanworth.
The following year, under the auspices of BLE, he picked up a bronze medal behind Murphy and another rising star, John Buckley of St Finbarr’s, at the county decider held at Mahon. Home on vacation from Villanova in 1971, he won his first Cork title, followed by another third place (in the wake of John Hartnett and Buckley) the following year.
Two more victories followed at Lemlara (1973) and Ballincollig (1974), these two years also marked by the first of Walsh’s four national cross-country titles. But when he lined up on that overcast November day at Bandon in 1978, it had been four years since he had last tasted success in his home county.
Having to settle for second to John Hartnett at Fermoy in 1975, two more defeats followed, both times to his Leevale clubmate Ray Treacy at Midleton (1976) and Bandon the following year.
In his preview in the Cork Examiner to the championship, Brendan Mooney stated that “Donie Walsh, the dominant figure in Irish cross-country running throughout the ‘70s is poised to add another county championship title to his string of successes.”
Adding that the Leevale man had never been outside the top three in the nine years he had competed, he predicted that Walsh’s main rivals would probably be his brother Michael and Bandon native Michael Lawton, now also wearing the Leevale colours.
And so it proved, with Michael – who would go on to take second in the inaugural Cork City Marathon four years later – making the early running, closely followed by Lawton who no doubt had plenty of local support. Just past the halfway stage, Donie made his move and gradually pulled away to finish a comfortable winner in a time of 37:00 for the hilly seven-and-a-miles.
Lawton was just 17 seconds in arrears with the younger Walsh a further 10 seconds back in third. The ever-consistent Ritchie Crowley (St Finbarr’s) was fourth, followed by Liam O’Brien (Midleton) in fifth, unattached Kerryman Willie Counihan (sixth), Denis Manning (St Finbarr’s), seventh, and Billy Bolster (Grange), eight.
The top 10 places were filled by three more Leevale runners - Jerry Murphy in ninth while Pat Duggan and Gene Mealy crossed the line together for a joint 10th to guarantee the club an easy team victory ahead of Imokilly and St Finbarr’s.
Seven months after they (along with Elaine Kelly) had made history by becoming the first women in the country to run a road race with the men, Marion Lyons and Dervla Mellerick took two of the top three places in the women’s race.
Compared to the 15 miles they had run from Cork to Cobh the previous April, this time the shorter distance was more to their liking as Lyons led her St Finbarr’s side to victory. She finished around 100 metres clear of Valerie O’Mahony from Togher with Mellerick, representing UCC, in third.
Catherine Hourihan of St Finbarr’s finished fourth ahead of future national champion Fionnuala Morrish from Leevale with the afore-mentioned Kelly in sixth.
The junior men’s race went to 16-year-old Finbarr McGrath of Leevale ahead of Brian Regan (Grange) and Der O’Riordan (Leevale) with Robert Shannon (Bantry) finishing fourth. Leevale were easy team winners but it was their third scorer – also aged 16 – who was destined to become one of Ireland’s greatest ever athletes.
Nine-and-a-half years on from that day around the muddy fields of Bandon, in the more lavish surroundings of the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis, Marcus O’Sullivan would win the first of his three World Indoor 1500m titles.
Although Donie Walsh would not taste individual success at county or national level again, the following March he would play a leading role as fifth scorer in Ireland’s silver-medal winning team at the World Cross-Country Championships.
Held in quagmire conditions at Limerick Racecourse, the Leevale man again produced the goods when it really mattered on what proved to be a never-to-be-forgotten day for those privileged to attend as John Treacy won the world crown for the second year in succession.

Update Nov 13th 2018
Ricky Burke's (St. Finbarr's AC) 1987 Belfast Marathon time (2:19:24) has been added, placing Ricky 6th on the List, and dropping Micheal Walsh out of the top 10.
Note: These lists comprise only of Cork-born athletes. There are many athletes who are not included in the list, even though they may have spent much of their lives in Cork, but who were born elsewhere, whether it was an other Irish county, or abroad.
Notable features of the listings are family relations, with father and daughter Richard (R.I.P.) and Jill Hodgins, brothers Michael and Donie Walsh, and husband & wife Martin and Claire McCarthy.
Top 10 Women's Listing
The Women's list makes interesting reading, with no less than six clubs represented. Many of the names will be familiar to all, however there are one or two that may not be so, like Brid Murphy and Valerie Vaughan

Top 11 Men's Listing
The men's listing reads like a Leevale AC 'Tour de Force' with nine of the ten held by Leevale AC athletes. Again some of the names will be familiar to all, but quite a few will not, like Sean Healy's 1971 performance - 47 years ago, which places him at Number 2 on the All-Time list, Sean O'Flynn, at Number 5, (1982) and Michael Walsh's 1983 performance on 'home soil', right here in Cork

SPAR Cork Airport Runway Run
Midnight Friday November 2nd 2018
The Holiday Blue car park is the designated car park and is free to race participants & stewards. The barriers will be up when you leave after the event.
Please do NOT press the button at the pedestrian crossing
Frequent traffic stoppages in the lead-up to the SPAR Runway Run 5k causes *MAJOR* traffic build-up on the approaches to Cork Airport, resulting in delays to traffic entering and in the vicinity of Cork Airport. Stewards will man the crossing both before and after the event, controlling both traffic and pedestrians in an orderly fashion.
After the event, please do *NOT* cross the road outside the terminal and attempt to climb the embankments, towards the car park.
It may look shorter but, abart from being an unwise and unsafe place to cross, it will be both slippery and downright dangerous, due to both slope and wet grass. Please be wise and take the safest and quickest route = the route in the image above.
There will be 2,500 participants, along with some 150 race stewards and other race personnel, at tonight's event, consequently there will be a very heavy demand for parking. There is ample parking in Cork Airport, however, it would help enormously if everyone could Car-Pool as far as possible.
Free parking will be available in the Holiday Blue carpark, adjacent to the Airport Terminal. Please allow up to fifteen (15) minutes to walk to the terminal
Please Car-Pool if at all possible
Due to potential damage to aircraft from items left or dropped on the runway, no loose items may be brought air-side from the terminal building, including: bottles, spare clothing, litter, mobiles phones, MP3 players, cameras, etc. In short, any loose, or potentially loose, item that may be dropped on the runway.
Immediately after the event, a 'sweep' of the runway will commence, to ensure that nobody has dropped anything on the runway. This 'sweep' is detailed, like a forensics search. It will be dark, making the sweep/search a lot harder...and longer. Please co-operate and leave loose items behind. Enjoy the unique location.
Check-In will take place inside the Terminal building, at the normal Airline Check-in Desks. Check-in will open at 9pm (21:00) and will close at 11pm (23:00), one hour before the event starts. This is to allow runners to be guided through the security barriers, and to check that prohibited material is not being inadvertently brought air-side.
Leaving after Number Pick-UP and Coming Back Later?
If you intend picking up your number early and leaving the Airport, intending to return 'just in time' for the race, please ensure that you are back in the Terminal by 11:30 at the absolute latest. If you are late, you will *ABSOLUTELY NOT* be allowed to start after the event has started.
