There was a unique meeting, at the Belfast International Cross-Country, on Saturday last, of the three fastest Irish (North & South) 3000m steeplechasers of all time – and the remarkable fact is that they all achieved those times more than 30 years ago.
Posting on his Facebook page, Northern Ireland record holder Peter McColgan said: “Met these two former Irish steeplechasers yesterday at the Belfast Cross-Country International, making up the top three fastest Irish of all time. Brendan Quinn, Liam O’Brien and myself. A good wee piece of history to have!”
The Athletics Ireland rankings for 2018 show just two Irish steeplechasers under 9:00 for the year, a statistic that is a repeat of the 2016 and 2017 lists. The fastest last year was Adam Kirk-Smith, with his 8:44.98, achieved in Belgium in July, while Tipperary-man Sean Tobin was the only other Irishman to go under nine minutes, having run his 8:53.09, in California, back in April.
Yet, one must go back over thirty three years, to August 1985, when Brendan Quinn, from Waterford, set the still-standing Irish record of 8:24.09, achieved at Brussels on August 30th. This improved on Liam O’Brien’s 8:27.24, which he ran at Crystal Palace, in June 1984, a time which qualified him for that summer’s Los Angeles Olympics, where he reached the semi-finals in the event.
The third and fourth fastest on the Irish All-Time list are also from Cork clubs. Kieran Stack (North Cork), at 8:29.60, and Joe Hartnett (St Finbarr’s), with his 8:34.52, again achieved in those times in respective years of 1985 and 1984.
Peter McColgan from Tyrone, who ran the steeplechase for Great Britain, at the 1991 World Championships, in Tokyo, achieved his Northern Irish record of 8:27.93 that same year, at Hengelo, in Holland.
Liam O’Brien is now the Technical Director of the Cork City Sports, and it was at this meeting that he achieved two of his other impressive track times – 4:00.8 for the One Mile and 13:36.19 for 5000m.
Of course his record in local road races is legendary, having won 59 out of the 67 Ballycotton Summer Series Five-Mile races that he competed in. He also won the Ballycotton ‘10’ on four occasions with a fastest time of 47:57 from 1988.

Grace McKenzie, Belgooly AC, set a new Irish Indoor Pentathlon record of 4,211 points at yesterday's Samford Multis, in Birmingham, Alabama, USA, breaking the previous Irish record of 4,174, held by Kate O’Connor, which was set in Sheffield, UK, just 11 days ago. Grace broke the McNeese State record for the first time at last year’s Southland Conference Indoor Championships with a gold medal-winning point total of 4,030. In addition to breaking both the McNeese College and Irish Records, it was also a new Southland Conference record, surpassing UTSA's Ryanne Dupree's 2006 score of 4,055 points.
It was certainly an eventful day for Grace...she also set a McNeese State high jump record, with a 1.74m jump, to take first place, while she set a new personal record in the shot put, for 3rd place, with a put of 11.47m. Grace was second in the long jump, in 5.81m, and won both the 60-meter hurdles, in 8.69 secs, and the 800-meters, in 2:13.51.
Grace finished second overall to Kennesaw State athlete Jordan Gray, who scored 4,218 points to edge out McKenzie by a mere seven (7) points

The Cork City Council Sports Capital Grant Scheme is to assist local voluntary sporting organisations in their efforts to develop and enhance sports and physical recreation facilities throughout Cork City.
Project applications must be of a capital nature and are directly related to developing and/or enhancing sporting and/or recreational facilities
The scheme is not intended as an alternative to any Department Sports Capital Grant Scheme, or other sources of funding, but will complement any such scheme, possibly helping with local contributions to satisfy criteria for these other funding sources.
A total of €270,000 is available under the 2019 Scheme
Applications forms are available from the Recreation & Sport Section, Cork City Council, City Hall, Cork, 0214924729, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or by downloading the form below.
Completed forms with all supporting documentation, should be addressed to the Administrative Officer, Recreation & Sports Section, Cork City Council, City Hall, Cork and must be returned before 5pm 15th Feb 2019.
Application Form (Word Doc)
There are two categories of Grant:
Minor Sports Grants (Under 5k): This is for minor capital grants for the enhancement of premises, pitches etc., and/or for purchase of non-personal sports equipment, that will be used by the club for at least five years.
Major Sports Grants (€5k - €10k): This is for capital grants to develop sport and active recreation facilities throughout Cork City.
The grant application must be from a local sporting organisation in Cork City.
The grant applicant must be located within the Cork City Boundary, or must provide evidence that the majority of facility users live within Cork City on Jan 1st 2019. [Note you club's Athletics Ireland Registration could be used for this, however you need to be mindful of GDPR restrictions on sharing of personal data]
The grant application form must be completed in full, with supporting estimates and/or quotations attached.
The applicant must have title to the property which they are enhancing, or have a lease or licence with more than 7 years remaining, or provide a letter of comfort from the property landlord, in relation to title on the property in question.
Applicants must demonstrate that the proposed works are of a capital nature and meet a sporting need in the area.
Provide costings and timeline for project.
Provide evidence of any other sources of funding, evidence of the club's own funding, and copies of the previous two years accounts.
The Club shall undertake to refund Cork City Council for any grant given, if the facility changes use or ceases to operate.
An acknowledgement sign may be required to be erected on the grounds, facility or premises.
Athletics clubs in Cork City are advised to examine the scheme and consider making an application. Previously, clubs effectively needed to have their own grounds and/or facilities, however changes now mean that clubs can join with other, non-athletics clubs, and/or schools to make joint applications.
Many clubs now have their own grounds and/or facilities, or are in the process of acquiring them, so the revised scheme opens up many possibilities, including joint ventures with other sports and also schools.

Athlone
Saturday January 12th 2019
Annette Quaid, Leevale AC, set a new 400m Indoor National Record, of 1.00.69, in the women's F40 category, in Round 1 of the National Indoor Leagues, at the AIT Indoor Arena, in Athlone, last Saturday. The women's 400m was a non-scoring event at the meet, but that didn't deter Annette from starting the New Year with the record set when winning Heat 2.
Annette's time of 1:00.69 improved on Niamh Fitzgerald's (Lucan Harriers AC) time of 1:02.42, set at the same venue, on March 20th 2016.
