Update - September 30th 2016

At the time of the original award ceremony, Donie was incapacitated, in hospital, following a fall, as a consequence,a special presentation ceremony was held in the River Lee, on September 30th

Cork City Sports Athletics Person of the Month - May 2016 - Award Citation

May - Forty Four years after representing Ireland at the Munich Olympics, in 1972, Donie Walsh (Leevale AC) receives the Cork City Sports Cork Athletic Person for the Month of May following his selection as Distance Coach to the 2016 Irish Olympic team in Rio de Janerio.

Donie's greatest successes came in the early 1970s, when he won five National 10000m Championships on the track, in six years He represented Ireland in the Marathon at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.  He won numerous other cross country and track & field titles. He was a scoring member of the Irish team that brought home the Silver medals, in the World Cross Country Championships, in 1979, on the day that John Treacy won the World Cross Country Championship Title for the second time.

Unfortunately due to an accident Donie was unable to attend the awards in person. The award was accepted on his behalf by his two sons Michael & Mark Walsh.

About Us

Cork Athletics County Board is a constituent member of Athletics Ireland. Cork Athletics is the governing body, administering athletics, track and field (T&F), cross-country (XC) and running in county Cork. The Board comprises elected representatives of constituent athletic clubs and running clubs. Cork County Board AAI organises Championship races and competition, including road, track & field (T&F) and Cross-country (XC), at junior, juvenile, senior and masters levels, and selects representation for the county. In addition, training and education is provided for coaches and officials. The Board also regulates the Athletics Ireland race/event permit (licence) process for county Cork.
