We had a fabulous day yesterday, at the first day (of three) of the Innovative Cork Athletics Cross-Country Leagues, held at the Cork Athletics grounds, in Slieveroe, Riverstick. The weather was unheard of for Cross-Country in Ireland - warm sunshine, 22 degrees C...and no mud. A far cry from what some of us have experienced over the year...driving rain, sleet, snow, deep mud..everything that nature can throw at us. But yesterday was a day for Sun-Block and sun-glasses!

While results were taken yesterday, there will be no published results. The intention, from the outset, was to provide an environment where athletes, young and old, could try-out, train or hone their Cross-Country skills ahead of the upcoming Championship season, without the pressures imposed by Championship racing. Some athletes simply ran around the course, enjoying the day, more used it as a training run, while others again took the opportunity to take a few 'scalps'. All in all it was a very enjoyable day for all.

There was a great and very relaxed atmosphere among the kids yesterday, with lots of chatting with other clubs before the races, which was one of the key elements behind the idea of the Leagues, and was wonderful to see.  Some athletes missed their starts yesterday, but, as this was not a championship day, all of these were allowed move up an age, or sun with boy/girls. This would not have been permitted in championships, but, in keeping with the spirit of the meet, everyone was allowed a run-out.

We can have the numbers ready for collection for the athletes that paid for the 3 races to be collected by one club member , and let the new entrants check in the same as yesterday , most people paid for the three races yesterday so the check in for second and third races won’t be as big.

On the organisational side the day went very smoothly, with lots of positive feedback, along with some suggestions for improvement.  Most athletes paid for all three day yesterday, so their numbers will be available for collection next day, avoiding the necessity of giving their details again, so that queue should move pretty quick.

There was a wide cross-section of clubs involved yesterday, however many clubs, for whatever reasons, were not represented. It really was their loss, to miss out on such a fine day, and a great opportunity to train/race on grass, in a relaxed, semi-competitive, environment.

If you missed out yesterday, you can still take part in either, or both, of teh remaining fixtures, on Saturday week, September 15th and/or Saturday September 29th.  Cost of entry each day is just €2 per athlete.

Unfortunately due to managing to short-circuit, not just one, but two batteries yesterday, no video footage is available.  The silver lining though was that is enabled the Webmaster to do a decent warm-up for a change and be happy with his run!

The Organisers on behalf of Cork Athletics County Board, Frank Hayes, Collette O'Riordan & Jerry Cronin, wish to thank everyone who helped, yesterday, contributing to making it such a success.

Remaining Dates: Saturday 15th September - 1pm & Saturday 29th September - 1pm

Venue : - Cork Athletics County Board Grounds, Slieveroe, Riverstick

These Leagues are intended to enable athletes, young and old, to both train and become familiar with Cross-Country running, before the start of the Cross-Country season.  If you've never tried Cross-Country, the leagues also provide an ideal platform to try out Cross-Country running. There are many clubs who don't have much, or even any, presence at Cross-Country Championships - it would be great to see these clubs represented in the leagues.  Do Try it - Guaranteed you'll come away looking for more!

  •     To remove the championship element

QUINNSWORTH CORK CITY SPORTS

MAREE MASTERS MARCUS!

WORDS BY JIM DOWLING - PICTURES BY BRIAN TANSEY

The Cork 800 celebrations reached one of its zeniths in a magnificent Cork City Sports at the Mardyke on Tuesday, July 9th. In the past ten years most of our leading distance runners have come from Munster and it is appro¬priate that the province's finest city should now boast the best athletics meeting in Ireland. However, it is also ironic that Dublin, where politicians have uttered so much bland rhetoric about improving athletics in Ireland, while sharing in the limelight of the triumphs of Eamonn Coghlan and John Treacy, should nowadays be without a major athletics meeting of any sort.

One hears excuses - such as the sponsorship for such a venture being harderto raise in Dublin than in Cork - but the situation surely is also indicative of a lack of will and industry on the part of the BLE authorities in Dublin.

To return to Cork, from an Irish point of view the highlight of the night was Ray Flynn's magnificent victory in the Quinnsworth 5,000m. However, from the Yellow Pack Hammerwhich began the evening, to the Cork 800 4x400m relay which concluded the meeting, the action never flagged but skipped like a light Lee breeze from one exciting contest to another. Perhaps from a local point of view, the icing on the cake was that in a Harp Lager Mile in which Eamonn Coghlan ran like a mere shadow of his normal self, his successor emerged in the shape of Marcus O'Sullivan, a son of Cork in every sense of the term and a credit to the city of his birth.

Here was a night that brought out the best in everyone. For some it was a night of redemption. The much maligned Declan Hegarty won back his reputation by finishing second to World Record Holder Yuri Sedyk of Russia in the Hammer. He set an Irish record for the event in the process, throwing 76.40m in the fifth round. Mary Decker Slaney left an ill-judged Olympic press conference well behind, proving in¬stead to be a genial, quiet American throughout her visit and showing all her renowned courage in a magnificent finish with Kirsty McDermott in the Cork Airport 800m. Caroline O'Shea ran a great race here but her recent 'flu virus left her short of strength in the final 200m, and she just failed to beat her Irish record. Mary's win was one of many highlights for the stars and stripes. The best finish of the night came in the Imperial Hotel 800m, in which Johnny Gray held on by the slimmest of margins from his countryman John Marshall. Sydney Maree won a tremendous contest for the Harp Lager Mile, dismissing with ease the challenge of Marcus O'Sullivan who, nonetheless, staked claims to Coghlan's mantle as the King of Irish milers. However the real sensation of the race was Enda Fitzpatrick who took sixth in the magnificent time of 3 Mins 56 secs, his first sub-four minute mile and gained at the expense of Dave Taylor and Eamonn Coghlan.

Another Irish mile star, Ray Flynn, eventually ran away with the 5,000m. Here was a magnificent    contest, with John Treacy, Tim Hutchins, Mike McLeod and Richard Mulligan all making brave sallies in the lead before Ray outshone them all.

It was not only the seniors who took the limelight. Seamus McCann of Antrim spreadeagled his field in the Junior 3,000m, Paul O'Regan won the Shandon Travel Open 400m in 47.6sees a most promising performance. Nor should one forget the girls. Monica Joyce ran the bravest of races in the Life Style 3,000m before just failing to hold Angela Tooby. Michele Walsh went close to the Irish record when winning the Rockies Fast Food 400m in 53.56, clearly indicating that her best days are stiil ahead. Lastly, in keeping with the spirit of the night, the American Johnnie Gray and the Russian Vladimir Bukov, combined with two Irishmen in the 4x400m to defeat the National squad. Of course the night would not have been complete without a win for Liam O'Brien in the Open Mile and a great night afterwards in the Imperial Hotel, only slightly marred by the delaying tactics of the doormen

Niamh McCarthy Throws 31.76m for Discus Gold

Niamh McCarthy took F41 discus gold, when she decimated the field at the World Para Athletics European Championships in Berlin.

Silver-medallist from the Rio Paralympics smashed the European record at the Rieti Grand Prix in Italy, last May, an indication of her intentions for these championships.

She broke her own European record with her fifth throw, 31:05m, however she bettered that with her final throw, to take the Title, record and Gold medal, throwing 31.76m.  Her final throw was a massive ten metres better than second-placed Pole Renata Sliwinska.

24 year old Niamh was the final Irish, and third Cork, athlete in these Championships, which delivered an outstanding haul of nine medals for Ireland.

Jason Smyth (two golds), Noelle Lenihan (gold), Orla Barry (gold), Greta Streimikyte (gold), Orla Comerford (two bronzes) and Jordan Lee (bronze) were the other Irish medallists.

Closing Midnight Tonight!

Following a huge rush of entries yesterday, race organisers, St. Finbarr's AC, have taken the decision to close entries at Midnight tonight, Sunday August 26th 2018.

The event doubles as the Cork Athletics County 10 Mile Championships, so it is critical for anyone contemplating running in the Championships, who hasn't already entered, that they do so in the next few hours.

End Note - Event Promotion

This might be something that other race organisers can benefit from, given the tight competition from competing athletics events, along with other "distractions".

St Finbarr's have used a number of diverse methods for publicising this year's event. One of these is the use of Facebook paid promotion, which has proved highly effective, so much so, that St. Finbarr's AC have increased their race numbers, from 551 finishers in 2017, to the situation where they are closing entries, with a 1,000 limit, at midnight tonight.

Many clubs, and Cork Athletics County Board, have been using Facebook paid promotion to great effect.  For those who are not familiar with Facebook paid promotion: For quite a small outlay, say €10 + VAT, event organisers can set their own target groups, say those aged 16 to 55, who like "Running", "Road Running", "Athletics"...or any other interest you select, within a radius of x (you chose) kilimetres of 'wherever', significant reaches can be made. It can be difficult to measure the effectiveness of these promotions, but they appear to be most effective when used in conjunction with Online Entry facilities.

The 2018 Sports Capital Programme will open for applications from 9am on Friday 7th September 2018

Thursday 30 August 2018

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross T.D. and the Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin T.D., today announced that €40 million is being made available under a new round of the Sports Capital Programme (SCP). The SCP is the Government’s primary vehicle for providing support to sports clubs and communities to develop sports infrastructure around the country. Applications can only be made online from 9am on Friday 7th September until 5pm on Friday 19th October, 2018.

Press Release

Cork Athletics Clubs and Divisions

Cork Athletics clubs and Divisions are advised to examine the scheme and consider making an application.  Previously, clubs effectively needed to have their own grounds and/or facilities, however changes to the scheme now mean that clubs can join with other, non-athletics clubs, and/or schools to make joint applications.

Many clubs now have their own grounds and/or facilities, or are in the process of acquiring them, so the revised scheme opens up many possibilities, including joint ventures with other sports and also schools.

While it remains to be seen how things will pan out, the revised scheme could possibly be "a game changer" for athletics clubs, consequently it would be unwise to ignore the Grant Scheme - you don't get what you don't ask for! - "A silent priest never won a parish"

This is an opportunity that clubs should grasp, if at all possible.

Survey

The purpose of this survey is to enable Cork Athletics get an approximate idea of how many athletes are likely to take part, so that things, e.g. race numbers, etc, can be set up to ensure that the day moves smoothly and quickly.

All entries will be taken on the day, from 11am.

The answers you give here will NOT be taken as gospel - as said above, it's so we have an idea of how many athletes to expect on Saturday - so please do complete the short form, on or before Friday August 31st

Last week, entries passed the 2,000 mark, and are coming from all parts; primarily from Cork City and surrounds, there are also large numbers from throughout the county, but also from further away, with large groups coming from Cashel, Clonmel, Tralee and Tipperary...and many other towns throughout the country.

With the intention of enabling a smooth and fast start for everyone, this year's Mini-Marathon will feature Time Zones. In addition, everyone will start on Centre Park Road, with the Mill Road-Centre Park Road bottleneck eliminated, making for a more enjoyable experience for all, runner and walker alike.

This year, Time Zones are being introduced to the event for the first time.  The zones will be marked on both sides of the road leading to the Start Line, with 7 zones in all:

  Zone   Time Range Approx. Pace
Zone 1 Sub 24 sub 6:30 Minutes/Mile
Zone 2 24 - 32 Mins 6:30 to 8:30 Minutes/Mile
Zone 3 33 - 36 Mins 8:30 to 9:30 Minutes/Mile
Zone 4 37 - 40 Mins 10 to 11 Minutes/Mile
Zone 5 41 - 45 Mins 11 to 12 Minutes/Mile
Zone 6 46-50 Mins 12 to 14 Minutes/Mile
Zone 7 50 Min + 14+ Minutes/Mile

Time Zones

Runners and walkers should enter the Time Zone most appropriate to their own target finish time.  If all participants adhere to this, it should make for a streamlined start and a pleasant experience for everyone, runner and walker alike.   The image above gives an indication of the zones, though the view foreshortens them, making some of the zones appear smaller than they actually will be.  Each zone will be sized to adequately cater for the estimated numbers (based on previous year's Mini-Marathon finish times) in each section.

There are two primary goals behind the introduction of Time Zones:

  • Improved Safety for Everyone, and
  • A smoother Start for all participants, from the fastest, to those who intend taking their leisure

If everyone starts in a realistic zone for their own individual abilities, we think that the change will prove a major factor in everyone enjoying their 2018 Mini-Marathon experience.

So...What do the Time Zones Mean for Walkers?
The aim of time zones is primarily to try to ensure that everyone is pretty well matched with others expecting to go at, more or less, the same pace. In effect this means that the runners will all start together, ahead of the walkers, reducing any pushing and shoving and jumping around the place that may have happened in previous years, making for a pleasant and enjoyable experience for everone taking part.

Everyone, walkers and runners, will start at the same time, but the time zones should go a long way towards ensuring that the start, and early stages of the event will go very smoothly.

But ...If I Start Far Back, Won't My Time Be Slower

No. Your time begins when you pass the sensors in the Start Gantry, where the sensors pick up and identify your unique number chip, and finishes when you pass the Finish Gantry, where your number chip is again detected. For example, the event starts at 1pm sharp, and it takes you 4 minutes and 45 seconds to cross the start line. You then finish in an overall time of 74 minutes and 45 seconds. Your Chip Time will therefore be 70:00 = the actual time you will have taken between the Start Line and the Finish Line.

This is a Race - Isn't It All About Runners?

Far from it. Sure, it's a race, but the vast majority of participants have always been walkers, and they contribute massively to the atmosphere and buzz of the day.

Of those declared so far this year, 49% have ticked themselves as "Over 51 Mins & Walk". In addition, there are bound to be some pretty fast walkers who will do the course in under 51 minutes. Each year we see masses and throngs of walkers coming through, the vast majority wearing T-shirts representing their chosen charity or cause, while some are doing the event in Remembrance of a family member, friend or colleague.

Charities

Each year, hundreds of charities benefit massively from funds raised by Mini-marathon participants. The funds raised are a vital 'life-blood' boost for these charities, who, in turn, use it to provide valuable and vital services for a myriad of services throughout Cork, Munster and even far beyond.

I'm Taking Part in the Mini-Marathon - How Do I Sign Up for a Charity

You should contact the charity directly. The procedure is that you enter for the event and then contact your chosen charity, who will provide you with all you need - sponsorship cards, T-Shirt, etc. After the event, when you've collected your sponsorship funds, you then send the funds directly to your designated charity.

August 2018 Athlete Transfer Window has Closed

August 24th 2018 - Deadline Passed

Transfer Window Closed

The August 2018 transfer deadline for the return of fully completed transfer forms, Friday August 24th, has passed.  Any further Transfer Forms that have been received after that date will NOT be accepted, except, only, Inter-County transfers which will have already been processed by the outgoing county.

The next transfer window will close on March 24th 2019

Late Forms

Late Forms are .....Late...and will NOT be accepted for this transfer window - NO EXCEPTIONS

March 2019 Transfers

Transfer forms may be downloaded  from the Athletics Ireland website.

The Procedure on the form MUST be followed.

Completed forms should be give/posted to Cork AAI County Board Registrar, John Copithorne, Belgooley, Co. Cork.

  • Do NOT call to John Copithorne's house or workplace.
  • Do NOT send your form by Registered Post, Courier or other form of delivery, except the regular Post
  • Do NOT send your completed form to Athletics Ireland HQ (Dublin), as this will severely affect delivery time, likely missing the deadline.

The Transfer Form must be signed in the following order

By the:
•   Member (in the case of a minor by the parent or guardian)
•   New Club
•   Outgoing Club
•   County Board (outgoing club)
•   County Boards (out of county club transfer)
•   County Boards (inter county transfer)

Incomplete, improperly or incorrectly completed forms will be rejected.

Notes:

  • Athletes must be in good stead with the outgoing club, i.e. they must not owe any membership  fee, or other arrears, and all club property in their possession must have been returned
  • Athletes whose membership of the outgoing club has lapsed by more than three years do not require a transfer, i.e. they are free to change clubs without going through the formal transfer process - they can be simply registered by the incoming club.
