With little over 5 weeks to go to the big day, entries are streaming in for the 37th Evening Echo Cork Women's Mini-Marathon. Evening Echo are Flagship Sponsors, for the 37th consecutive year, and this year we have Tesco join the event as one of the main Sponsors.  Entries passed the 1,000 mark on Monday last, and are coming from all parts; primarily from Cork City and surrounds, there are also large numbers from throughout the county, but also from further away, with large groups coming from Cashel, Clonmel, Tralee and Tipperary...and many other towns throughout the country.

This year, the event is changed to a 6km event - previously it was a little shy of 4 Miles. This will enable all participants to start on Centre Park Road, eliminating the frantic merging of previous years, where twin streams from Mill Road and Centre Park Road joined together. The single stream start will make for a more efficient start for all participants and is proving very popular, judging from feedback received to date.

This year, Time Zones are being introduced to the event for the first time.  The zones will be marked on both sides of the road leading to the Start Line, with 7 zones in all:

  Zone   Time Range Approx. Pace
Zone 1 Sub 24 sub 6:30 Minutes/Mile
Zone 2 24 - 32 Mins 6:30 to 8:30 Minutes/Mile
Zone 3 33 - 36 Mins 8:30 to 9:30 Minutes/Mile
Zone 4 37 - 40 Mins 10 to 11 Minutes/Mile
Zone 5 41 - 45 Mins 11 to 12 Minutes/Mile
Zone 6 46-50 Mins 12 to 14 Minutes/Mile
Zone 7 50 Min + 14+ Minutes/Mile

Time Zones

Runners and walkers should enter the Time Zone most appropriate to their own target finish time.  If all participants adhere to this, it should make for a streamlined start and a pleasant experience for everyone, runner and walker alike.   The image above gives an indication of the zones, though the view foreshortens them, making some of the zones appear smaller than they actually will be.  Each zone will be sized to adequately cater for the estimated numbers (based on previous year's Mini-Marathon finish times) in each section.

There are two primary goals behind the introduction of Time Zones:
Improve Safety for Everyone and
Make for a smoother Start for all participants, from the fastest to those who intend taking their leisure

If everyone starts in a realistic zone for their own individual abilities, we think that the change will prove a major factor in everyone enjoying their 2017 Mini-Marathon experience.

...We Like It.....We Hope YOU do Too!!

Distance change for Echo Mini Marathon

■ Roisin Burke

ONE of Cork's flagship athletics event is making changes for 2018.

The Evening Echo Women's Mini Marathon, which is in its 37th year, is changing its length from 6.5km to 6km and organisers Cork Athletics are also introducing voluntary time zones to ensure a seamless procession of runners from start to finish.

John Quigley of Cork Athletics said the organisation want to improve the experience of the participants as well as the safety of the event.
"Up till now, it has been 'go where you like', so you might have a walker up at the front or a runner caught at the back.

"This year we arc doing a couple of things, we have changed the distance which is to enable everyone to start on Centre Park Road.
"Up until now you had people coming out of Mill Road and they were merging which we felt was not the safest thing."

"We have also set up voluntary time zones so we will be asking walkers to stay back and runners will go up the front at the faster time zones."
Mr Quigley said he thinks people will be very pleased with what they are doing."

Last year the race had 6,000 people taking part, but this year, with the new-improved lay-out, Cork Athletics are hoping to increase it to 8,000 participants.
The Evening Echo Women's Mini Marathon also attracts a number of men in attendance, but Mr Quigley stressed they are not eligible for the prizes. "All the prizes are for women, we do get a load of male interlopers, some in drag and some don't even bother to make the effort, but only women are eligible for the prizes.

"We also promote the event as a charity fundraiser, wo want people to use it as a way to raise money for charity. We reckon each year the mini-marathon raises €1.5m for charity.

The race takes place on Sunday, September 16, at 1pm.

European Athletics Championships 2018 - Irish Day 2 Review

Barr into 400m Hurdles Final

European Championships

Berlin

Tuesday August 7th 2018

Athletics Ireland Release (1pm) - Feidhlim Kelly

Boyce Hits Berlin Wall in Brave Medal Bid

After a brave medal in the men’s 50km race walk, Brendan Boyce (Finn Valley) hit the wall in the final 10k, finishing in 19th place, in 4:02:14, at the European Athletics Championships, in Berlin today, August 7th

The Donegal athlete bravely went with the pace from the get go, despite a hampered preparation in the build-up.

Boyce was cross-training for six weeks, and then had three weeks proper race walking training, due to a stress reaction in his tibia.

“Aerobically I was very fit, but just missing some resistance training,” said Boyce afterwards. “I was looking at going after it positively, and seeing what was possible.”

Earlier in the morning Chris O’Donnell (North Sligo) ran a season’s best of 46.81, to finish 6th from lane 1, in the first heat of the men’s 400m.

“I’m one of the youngest competitors here, and this experience will stand to me to have an impact in future championships,” said 20-year-old O’Donnell afterwards.

Siofra Cleirigh-Buttner (DSD) finished 6th in heat 1 of the 800m, in 2:02.80, while Claire Mooney (UCD) finished 8th in heat 2 of the 800m, in 2:04.26.

“I’m reasonably content, and I’m improving,” said Cleirigh Buttner afterwards who is now finished university in Villanova. Mooney wasn’t overly pleased, but she had given it everything, taking the lead with 250m to go. “I wasn’t strong enough in the end, but I’ll come back better for it,” said Mooney.

Phil Healy (Bandon) competes this evening at 18:05, in the semi-finals of the women's 100m, with Thomas Barr (Ferrybank) on at 19:09 in the semi-finals of the 400m hurdles. Stephen Scullion (Clonliffe Harriers) runs in the final of the men's 10,000m, at 19:20 (all Irish times).

Athlete interviews are available on Athletics Ireland social media channels, and also on RTE, where there is extensive coverage of the championships.

Barr Clears First Hurdle into European Final

Thomas Barr (Ferrybank) did enough this evening, August 7th, to qualify for the final of the 400m hurdles, at the European Athletics Championships, finishing second in his semi-final, in 49.10, and now has it all to play for in Berlin on Thursday.

Barr will run in lane 8, in Thursday’s final (August 9th), and was pleased to shake off the rustiness and nerves of a first race at the championships. This will be Barr's first European senior final.

“I was nervous, but I always am in the first race, even at the national championships” Barr said positively afterwards. “I can run in any lane, and take the positives for the final. I eased off a bit too much on the top bend, but it’s all to play for in the final.”

Phil Healy (Bandon) was first of the Irish on the track in the evening session, and she finished 7th in her semi-final of the 100m in 11.46. This ranked her 20th overall, exceeding her ranking.

Phil's run rounded out a good 100m campaign this season, going into the season with a PB of 11.49. She will now move on to the 200m.

Stephen Scullion (Clonliffe Harriers) had a tough battle in the heavy heat, in the men’s 10,000m final. He too exceeded his ranking, finishing 23rd in 29:46.87

 Commentary

August 4th

The Leaderboards have been updated to reflect the two registered races held yesterday, Friday August 3rd; Conna 5k and Kinsale 5, two events with contrasting profiles. While the Kinsale 5 has a negative altitude profile, making it one of the fastest 5 milers around, the Conna 5k is altitude neutral, but has a testing hill in the middle.

As a result of the contrasting courses, there were very few additions to the 5k Leaderboard following Conna, however there were a multitude of changes after Kinsale.

August 18th
East Cork Harbour Half-Marathon & 10k, Route 2 Crook 5 and Liscarroll 5k & 10k added. One change to Half-Marathon Leaderboard (20th place), with three changes to F50 table. The Liscarroll 10k saw several changes to Masters Men & Women's leaderboard.  No changes made after Liscarroll 5k. probably the biggest change came in the Women's 10k Leaderboard, where Catherina McKiernan swept straight to the top of the table with an emphatic 36:32 in Rostellan

Cork Athletics Registration Figures - July 31st 2018

Cork Athletics Registration Figures - July 31st 2018

 cork athletics registration plate 180731

July end-of-month registrations for Cork Athletics stand at 7,343. This is marginally down (81 registrations) on the July 2017 figure of 7,424 and ahead of the corresponding 2016 figure of 6,851, while the July 2015 figure was 6,160.

To date, fifty five of Cork's fifty seven registered clubs have registered athletes, leaving just two clubs yet to register a single athlete.

These clubs, and their athletes, coaches, officials and other club members are NOT covered by Athletics Ireland insurance for any purpose whatsoever, leaving those athletes and clubs in a precarious position. In the situation where membership fees have been collected, but no Athletics Ireland registration paid, then that particular club, and its officers, leave themselves in a very precarious position, with the club, and the individual officers, personally covering any liability arising.

An additional consequence of failing to register a club and the minimum registration requirement of ten (10) registered members, is that permit applications from such clubs will, as has already happened this year, be declined, pending registration.

2018 Athletics Ireland Registrations are now Due

Clubs are reminded that 2018 registrations should be completed as soon as possible. There was a "grace period" of a few weeks, to allow sufficient time for re-registrations, whereby insurance cover continued, pending registration.  This "grace period" does NOT extend beyond the later end of January, and did NOT include competition.

Therefore any athlete, coach, official, or any member acting in any capacity, who remains unregistered is NOT covered by Athletics Irelands insurance, for ANY purpose whatsoever, including training and/or competition.

Clubs are urged to register their athletes without further delay.

Overall Registrations as at July 31st 2018

Leevale AC and Bandon AC maintain their rivalry at the head of the list, by a distance, with both clubs approaching 600 registered members. Togher AC and Ballymore Cobh A.C. both have over 300 registered members. A total of fifteen (15) clubs have over 200 registrations, while another eleven (11) clubs now exceed 100 registered members, a total of 26 clubs. So almost 50% of registered clubs exceed 100 registered members.

Leon Reid has Dream Debut to Make European Final

European Championships

Berlin

Wednesday August 8th 2018

Athletics Ireland Release (1pm) - Feidhlim Kelly

Lawler bows out in Berlin

Marcus Lawler (SLOT) bowed out of the European Athletics Championships, in the heats of the 200m, finishing fifth in 20.80 seconds, in Berlin this morning, August 8th.

“I’m bitterly disappointed with that,” Lawler who was running from lane 2, said afterwards. “I had a target of making the final, so I’m really disappointed. My preparation was good. That performance wasn’t good enough, and didn’t cut it.”

It had been a successful season up to this point for Lawler, having run 20.40. This made it a hard pill to swallow  straight after the race, for the Carlow sprinter. Nevertheless, he can look back on a positive season, and build on this experience for 2019.

In other news, Laura Graham (Mourne Runners) has withdrawn from the marathon due to an Achilles injury, and Ben Reynolds (North Down) has pulled out of the 110m hurdles, due to a lower back problem.

Leon Reid (Menapians) competes in the semi-finals of the men's 200m this evening, while Emma Mitchell (Queens) goes in the women's 10,000m final.

Athlete interviews are available on Athletics Ireland social media channels, and also on RTE, where there is extensive coverage of the championships.

Athletics Ireland Release (9pm) - Feidhlim Kelly

Reid’s Dream Debut to Make European Final

Leon Reid (Menapians) made a dream debut in the green singlet, finishing second in his 200m semi-final, in 20.38 sec, to make the final at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin today, August 8th.

Reid was running from lane 3, and ran his customary strong finishing straight. He looks to have plenty in store for tomorrow’s final, where he will run in lane 8.

“It’s a dream come true to finally run for Ireland, and make the final,” Reid said happily afterwards. “It’s a super suit,” he commented on wearing the green singlet. His time of 20.38, places him second on the Irish all-time list.

No Irish male sprinter has ever won a medal at a European championship since its inauguration, in Turinin, 1934. Tomorrow there will be two opportunities to rectify that; Reid in the 200m, and Thomas Barr (Ferrybank) in the 400m hurdles.

Emma Mitchell (Queens) ran in a gruelling women’s 10,000m final, where she finished 17th, in 34:08.61. “I gave it everything I had, but there was nothing there. It was really hot, but it was the same for everyone,” said Mitchell afterwards.

Other Irish athletes in action tomorrow (August 9th) are Mark English (UCD) and Zak Curran (DSD), in the heats of the men’s 800m.

Phil Healy Advances in 100m

European Championships

Berlin

Athletics Ireland Release - Feidhlim Kelly

Healy hits the Ground Running in Berlin

Phil Healy (Bandon AC) hit the ground running in Berlin, to advance to the semi-finals of the 100m, at the European Athletics Championships, finishing second in 11.44 today, August 6th

Healy was happy with her performance, and came through strongly in heat 3, to finish second, and qualify automatically.

“That’s the box ticked and I’m looking forward to the semi-finals tomorrow,” said Healy.

Gina Akpe-Moses (Blackrock-Louth) was fourth in heat 1 of the 100m, in 11.63, and just missed out on making the semi-finals, by 0.02 seconds.

“I’m happy with my run and how I performed,” said Akpe-Moses after her first senior international championship. “I wasn’t happy with the time but I was good out of the blocks and ran well.”

Adam McMullen (Crusaders) was unable to advance to the men’s long jump final, recording a best of 7.47m, which left him 13th in Group B, and 25th overall.

“I’m disappointed with that,” said McMullen afterwards. He has been making changes in order to advance to the next level. “My speed has improved, but I couldn’t get it right on the runway today.”

Athlete interviews are available on Athletics Ireland social media channels, and also on RTE, where there is extensive coverage of the championships.

Athletics Ireland Release - Feidhlim Kelly

Brendan Boyce (Finn Valley) will be in the first medal race for Ireland in the men’s 50km on Tuesday morning where he will hope for a strong showing. The action comes thick and fast then in the evening session and for the rest of the week.

The Irish athletes will be hoping to negotiate the rounds aiming at recording season’s bests or personal bests with plenty of final chances in the offing.

Statistically it will be a challenge for Irish athletes to podium but that won’t deter highly-ranked athletes such as Thomas Barr (Ferrybank) in the men’s 400m hurdles and Ciara Mageean (UCD) in the women’s 1500m.

Leon Reid (Menapians) will compete alongside (Marcus Lawler (SLOT) in the men’s 200m and should spur each other on to good performances while Phil Healy (Bandon) runs in the 100m and 200m.

There are also team competitions in the marathon so the women’s and men’s teams will be looking to combine to put forward a strong challenge and feature.

There are a lot of young athletes competing who are still U20 or have just graduated into their first senior championship including Gina Akpe-Moses (Blackrock-Louth), world U20 4x100m relay silver medallist, in the women’s 100m and Chris O’Donnell (North Sligo), in the men’s 400m who was 6th in the European U20 final last year in a national U20 record of 46.54.

This championships gives a great opportunity for many athletes to get experience in this Tokyo Olympic cycle.

The Irish competition timetable (including should they advance to finals) is below. For event features, live timetable and results, along with live stream options are available on the European Athletics website

There will also be extensive coverage on RTÉ along with social media updates on Athletics Ireland channels.

Athletics Ireland Release

The Irish team has been announced for the Celtic Games in Grangemouth, Scotland on Saturday 4th August. The teams will be competing in the U16 and U18 age groups at the weekend.

Some of Ireland's brightest young athletes will take to the track and field in Grangemouth Stadium, a number of whom featured prominently at the Irish life Health Juvenile Championships this this month.

Sophie Meredith (St Mary’s Limerick) took gold with a jump of 5.85 in a high-quality U18 Juvenile girls’ long jump competition.

While Aimee Hayde’s (Newport) U15 girls’ 800m record was broken, Hayde's went on to break the U16 record winning gold in 2:11.63. The Course FAQ

The 2018 Course

Major changes are planned for this year's race.  The changes have been introduced to make the event a more memorable and pleasurable experienced for all participants, walkers and runners alike.

The biggest change is that course will be a 6km race (or 3.73 Miles) event. This means that all participants should be able to assemble and start on Centre Park Road, eliminating the hectic merge of previous years, at the Mill Road / Centre Park Road, making for a much smoother start for all.

Time Zones

Another change new to the race is the introduction of Time Zones. These will be self-selected zones, starting at Sub-24 Minutes, starting with 2 to 3 Minute (exact ranges yet to be decided) zones, with higher ranges as times increase.

So....How will this work? Will I be told which Time Zone I must Go To?

The zones are entirely voluntary - YOU choose the time zone most appriate for your own expected finish time.  The zones will be clearly marked on both sides of the road, between the start line and the the junction of Centre Park Road and Victoria Road.

Walkers

I've always walked the course, but I've always started at the front. Can I do the same this year?
The time zones are completely voluntary, however we urge to please not start at the front, but further back, in a zone appropriate to your own estimated finish time. If you do start at the front, you will be passed, immediately after the start, by thousands of runners, going much faster than you, possibly leading to a less than pleasant experience.  The principle behind the time zones is that all participants will start smoothly, getting right into their own pace from the outset, leading to a far more enjoyable and safe experience.  This will only work properly if all participants start in a realistic time zone for their pace and finish time.

FAQ list

a) Your details can be recorded quickly after you finish
b) Most importantly, that you can be identified rapidly in the event of a medical emergency.
c) So that you can be identified in photos and videos.
FAQ list

7. I haven't entered and don't have a number
If you don't have a number, you will NOT be admitted to the start area.  If you join in somewhere along the course, you will NOT be covered by the race insurance and will be taking PERSONAL LIABILITY for any mishap you may cause.  After you finish you will NOT receive a finisher's medal or goodie bag.
If you are involved in a medical emergency, we will not know who you are and will not have your details.
FAQ list

8. I haven't entered, I want all my money to go to charity
This event costs a lot of money to organise, however the event organisers, Cork Athletics County Board, maintain the entry charge at a low rate, significantly below that of most other similar events.

There are many "hidden" costs that you  may not have considered; Insurance entrants in this event are covered by insurance - anyone who has not entered will not be covered.  Portaloos, barriers, including transport for these, security personnel, medical services, race numbers, pins (yes - you may only use 4, but some 50,000 pin are required @ approx. €15 per 1,000), phone & postage, race flyers, information leaflets (distributed to houses and businesses along the course), signage, public address, race radios and many, many more costs.

No Athletics Ireland official or steward receives any money from this event - all time and services are provided free of charge.  The big winners in this event are the various charities chosen by the charities themselves - approx. €1.5 million will be raised for charity from this year's Evening Echo Mini-Marathon - all of which will be given directly to the charities by the participants. So, if people didn't pay their entry fee, it would not be possible to cover the costs of organising and running this event and the big losers would be the charities.
FAQ list

9. Where do I go on the day?
Entrance to the start holding area is via Mill Road and/or Centre Park Road, off Victoria Road.  Other roads in the area will be closed off and barriered, with security personnel present.  There will be no access from the quay areas.

FAQ list

10.  I intend running, is there a separate area for runners?
There is no separate start area for runners. However there are time zones and all runners and walkers are expected to line up in zones appropriate to their level of fitness, pace and expected finish time

FAQ list

11. I intend walking, but I want to get away early. Can I start at the front?
You will not be prevented from starting at the front, but, if you're walking, please do NOT line up towards the front, otherwise there may be jostling and pushing.  You will have a far more pleasant experience if you line up in the zone nearest to your estimated pace/finish time. This will allow everyone to move off quickly, without being held up by slower people in front of them, making for a frustrationg time all round. We want everyone to enjoy their experience.
FAQ list

12. What is the Route?
The route can be seen here, on MapMyRun. the start line is on Centre Park Road.  The race continues east, along Centre Park Road, as far as the Marina, where it turns right and heads east towards Blackrock village. Turning right in Blackrock, at approx. half-way, the route heads back, along Blackrock Road, towards the city, and the finish area.  In Ballintemple, the course turns right into Maryville, passing the 3 mile mark, before turning left onto Monaghan Road and directly on to the finish line.  The course is essentially flat, with only one real, relatively short, drag/hill, coming out of Blackrock village.
FAQ list

FAQ list

The race will be chip timed by MyRunResults.  Chip timing means that YOUR time does not start when the gun goes, it starts when YOU cross the start line.

FAQ list
