The recent AIT International Grand Prix athletics meeting in Athlone will air on TG4 this coming Friday night at 7:30pm.

Another full-house packed into the impressive indoor arena at Athlone Institute of Technology to witness the fourth running of Ireland's premier indoor athletics event, featuring former world and Olympic sprint hurdles champion Sally Pearson, 800m World Championship silver-medallist Melissa Bishop, Morton Games winner and Olympic finalist Ryan Gregson, and one of the fastest women in the world this year over 60 metres, Christina Manning.

European Championship bronze-medallist from last summer, Ciara Mageean, ace sprinter Phil Healy, European Championship 4th-placer Paul Robinson and Euro Indoors veteran John Travers were the biggest Irish names competing.

Despite there being no live coverage on Irish television this year - it aired live in previous years on the now defunct IrishTV - the AIT Grand Prix still went out live in five European countries on Fox Sports TV, alongside a live stream, plus highlights in Ireland on eirSport, in the UK on Premier Sports, in the Netherlands and Italy on their respective Fox Sports channels, and in 25 countries across Africa on Fox Sports Africa.

Next Friday night's broadcast marks a return to athletics coverage for TG4 after last airing the Irish Schools Track and Field in 2010, and is the first Irish Grand Prix meeting in twelve years to be broadcast on one of the "big four" terrestrial channels, after the 2005 Cork City Sports.

Commentary will come from the usual independent television athletics team of Will Downing, Jessie Barr and Dick Hooper, with reporting from Mark Rodden of Eurosport.

Aimed at encouraging social running amongst the business community in Dublin, Cork and Belfast, the event welcomes both seasoned runners as well as beginners. Each run will be a team event, with four participants on each team. Team members’ times are combined to determine the winner in each category. There are three categories: male, female & mixed.

Paul McCann, Managing Partner with Grant Thornton:  “We are delighted to be hosting the 5k Corporate Challenge Series again in 2017. As a team event, these runs offer a great opportunity to build team spirit and generate some healthy competition.  The run series has grown hugely in popularity, and this year, we are hosting 3 runs during the summer – in Dublin, Cork and Belfast. I would encourage both employers and employees alike, across the country, to sign up and get involved!”

Event Ambassador, International Athlete Mark Christie commented, “The Grant Thornton Corporate 5K Team Challenge is a great way of encouraging people within the workplace to get or keep fit. Each year the event is made up of runners from those who run regularly to complete beginners. The team element adds a sense of fun & camaraderie amongst work colleagues. I’m really looking forward to taking part of it this year and looking forward to encouraging my colleague to take part with me in the Dublin Docklands on September 6th”

John Foley, Chief Executive of Athletics Ireland:  “As an association one of our core strategic objectives is to promote health and fitness in the population as a whole. This event enables us to reach beyond our core membership into the business community by encouraging them to focus on a fitness programme which targets a 5k run; a good starter point for novice runners.”

Foley added: “Grant Thornton’s sponsorship of this event allows for it to be a revenue earner for the association with profits generated channelled into our Junior High Performance Athletics programmes. These programmes provide support and expertise to close to 100 of our emerging young athletes to help them to fulfil their potential.”

All events are chip timed, with each participant receiving a technical t-shirt and goody bag. All participants are encouraged to fundraise for the chosen charity, Make-A-Wish, through www.everydayhero.com/ie/ to which 10% of all registration fees will be donated.

  • Do NOT call to John Copithorne's house or workplace.

  • Do NOT send your form by Registered Post, Courier or other form of delivery, except the regular Post

  • Do NOT send your completed form to Athletics Ireland HQ (Dublin), as this will severely affect delivery time, likely missing the deadline.

  • Athletes whose membership of the outgoing club has lapsed by more than three years do not require a transfer, i.e. they are free to change clubs without going through the formal transfer process - they can be simply registered by the incoming club.
  • It takes longer to gather the signatures for Intercounty transfers, so please allow sufficient time.

Alex O'Shea Wins Barry 40 Mile Track Race

Welsh Ultra Success for Alex O'Shea

Barry, Wales
Sunday March 12th 2017

Alex OShea Barry 40 Mile Track Race 2017

St Finbarr's AC athlete, Alex O'Shea, competed in the 40 Mile Barry Track Race, in Barry, Wales, yesterday, taking the honours with a winning time of under 4 hours and 30 minutes.  Results will be posted when they become available.

Alex OShea Barry 40 Mile Track Race 2017 a

Before he travelled, Alex posted on Facebook ""As I head to Wales for a longer race I can't help thinking of Ballycotton 10 and what would have been my 10th time running it. But as an ultra runner I have opted to focus on a welsh national competition over longer a distance. Not being Welsh I will compete in the open race."

Alex's performance was approx. 6:45/mile for every mile. This equates with a 67:30 Ballycotton 10....and then continuing to repeat this another three times = four Ballycotton 10's back-to-back

Cork Athletics Registration Figures - March 15th 2017

Record Cork Athletics Registration Figures - March 15th 2017

Cork Athletics Registration Plate 170315

As of March 15th, Cork Athletics Registrations stand at 5,845, up 1,114 (23.55%) on the February 14th figure of 4,731. The March 2016 end-of-month figure was 5,609, so March registrations are over 4% up on last year, with two weeks ot go to the end of March.

To date, fifty of Cork's fifty three registered clubs have registered athletes, leaving three clubs yet to register an athlete.  These clubs, and their athletes, are reminded that the insurance dispensation, whereby the 2016 insurance cover continued until the end of January last, is no longer in force - unregistered athletes are NOT covered by the Athletics Ireland insurance for any purpose whatsoever, leaving those athletes and clubs in a precarious position.

Some clubs have been very quick 'out of the starting blocks', while others are still just 'taking off their tracksuits'

2017 Athletics Ireland Registrations are now Due

Clubs are reminded that 2017 registrations should be completed as soon as possible. There was a "grace period" of a few weeks, to allow sufficient time for re-registrations, whereby insurance cover continued, pending registration.  This "grace period" does NOT extend beyond January 31st and does NOT include competition.

Therefore any athlete that remains unregistered beyond January 31st is NOT covered by Athletics Irelands insurance, for ANY purpose, training or competition.
Clubs are urged to register their athletes without further delay.

NB: The "grace period" covers official club, county, provincial and national training sessions.  It does NOT cover competition. All athletes competing in Championship or representative events MUST be registered.  Club Registrars are reminded that there is a new Registration System in operation.

Overall Registrations as at March 15th 2017

Bandon AC and Leevale AC head the list, as usual, by a distance, with each club having over 500 registered members, and are separated by just five registrations.  Two clubs, Ballymore Cobh AC and Midleton AC, have over 300 registered members, while a further four clubs exceed the 200 registrations mark, and another eleven clubs now have over 100 registered members.

The First Ballycotton 10

This year's Ballycotton 10 is being held on exactly the same day in March as the very first Ballycotton 10.  Thirty one (31) athletes lined up that day. No requirement for chip timing, finishing chutes, portaloos, barriers etc.  ...and no Garmins.  Nobody was complaining that the course was long or short - anyway wasn't the course measured by John Walshe, pioneer of course measurement in Ireland.

Ireland's First Road Race Calibration Course Relaid!

(Extracted from Cork Athletics article - Measurement News May 2014)
The first ever calibration course in Ireland was laid down, in Kilmacahill, Ballycotton, on Jan 1st 1978, prior to the First Ballycotton 10.  The course is on the straight, just before the 6M mark in the Ballycotton 10. It was laid down by East Cork's John Walshe, assisted by Dan Donovan.  The course was a half mile long and the device used was a Veeder Rootes counter, supplied by John Jewell. In 1988, John acquired a Jones Counter from New Your Road Runners (NYRR), at a cost of $35 = £23.74, or €30.15 in today's terms - current cost of a Jones Counter is approx. €120 .....and the rest is history!

Short report on the 1978 Ballycotton 10 (from Ballycotton 10 History)

1978:
A dull, grey March Sunday, towards the end of the ‘Seventies. Jack Lynch was Taoiseach, John Treacy and Gerry Deegan were winning NCAA Indoor titles in Detroit and here at home ‘The Rare Auld Times’ by Danny Doyle was No. 1 in the charts.

It was also a ‘rare old time’ as far as road running was concerned. A typical field of 31 male runners lined up on a village street for the untypical distance of ten miles. Just after 50 minutes had elapsed, Richard Crowley had added another trophy to his mantelpiece. Twenty four of the 31 would break the hour, all would proudly go home bearing a time certificate and promising to return in a years’ time, hopefully to a bigger and better event.

The 1978 Field

Sadly four of the thirty one starters that day have passed away: Dick Hodgins, Liam Horgan, Joe O'Flynn, and Jerry Martin.  Eight athletes who ran the first race will be lining up again on Sunday: Batt Kearney, Jack O'Leary, Michael Murphy, Donal Burke, John Walshe, Dan Kennedy, John O'Leary and Willie O'Mahony.  Two others are involved in the race management; Liam O'Brien is heavily involved in the event (and countless other athletics events, ventures and bodies!), while Michael Joyce will be doing the race commentary.
