Then there were two: Bandon AC's Phil Healy and Emerald AC's Ciara Neville compete in tomorrow afternoon's Womens 60m semi-final, at 4pm. The final is at 18:10, so we'll all be rootin' for the Irish duo at 4, and, hopefully, again just after 6pm.

Ciara Neville (Emerald) and Phil Healy (Bandon) were fast out of the blocks this morning, qualifing for the women’s 60m semi-finals, at the European Indoor Championships, in Belgrade.
17-year-old Neville was first up and the Emerald AC sprinter clocked 7.46 to finish fourth in her 60m heat this morning to advance automatically.
"I'm absolutely delighted,” said Neville afterwards. “I ran that race like a final. I thought really hard about competing here, but I decided to come in case this opportunity never came around again. There's more to come."
Phil Healy was equally delighted with her automatic qualification in the 60m after finishing fourth in her heat in 7.39.
"A big Q, that's what I came out here for, so I have to be happy,” said Healy who ran in the 400m heats yesterday. “After the 400, if I let myself think the legs are heavy, then you're fighting a losing battle. You have to believe you're coming out fresh, then it's going to happen."
It was a challenging evening for the Irish at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade with Ciara Mageean (UCD) limping off the track in the women’s 1500m final and John Travers (Donore Harriers) 11th in the men’s 1500m final in 3:53.11.
Great Britain’s Laura Muir won the women’s 1500m in a championship record of 4:02.39 which also was a British record. Mageean dropped out with 400m to go and was limping heavily citing a sore Achilles.
Poland’s Marcin Lewandowski won the men’s 1500m in 3:44.82 to follow up on the gold in the 800m he won in Prague in 2015 where Mark English won silver. “Unfortunately I didn’t put in the performance I wanted to put in,” said Travers afterwards on his 11th place finish.

Women's 400m Denisa Rosolová Crash - European Indoor Athletics Championships Belgrade 2017
Bandon AC's Phil Healy opened well in heat 5 of 6. It was neck-and-neck coming to the 200m mark, with Healy on the rail, however things went awry at that point.
French Athlete, Guei, as the BBC put it, 'shoulder charged' Rosolova, on Phil's right, who then unintentionally, and badly, impeded Phil, resulting in a major loss of momentum. Rosolova was then accidentally clipped by Healy, falling heavily to the track. Rosolova was stretchered off afterwards.
In the meantime, Healy regained her composure and chased down the three ahead, but faded slightly on the final bend, finishing in 54.80, just 1.31 sec off her PB, set last month. This was a fantastic achievement, given the drama, and her complete loss of momentum, at the 200m mark.
Guei, the French athlete was subsequently disqualified. No word yet on any possible Irish appeal on Phil's behalf.
Update: Brian Gregan qualified automatically, in second place, in the mens 400m, in 47.62
Gregan Stars in Morning Session in Belgrade
Brian Gregan (Clonliffe Harriers) was the highlight Irish performer on the first morning session of the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade advancing to the semi-finals of the mens' 400m.
Gregan was drawn with championship favourite Pavel Maslak (Czech Republic) and managed his race well to finish second in 47.62 to qualify automatically. Maslak won in 47.52. The semi-finals are later this evening at 17:05 and Gregan said “I got through and that’s the main thing. I’m looking forward to tonight.”
Sinead Denny (DSD) got Irish interest underway finishing fourth in heat 1 of the women’s 400m heats in 54.20. Unfortunately the heats were redrawn and she had the difficult task of running from lane 1 and missed out on a fastest qualifier spot.
Phil Healy (Bandon) finished third in a physical 400m heat, where she was checked heavily at the bell, with her time of 54.80 not enough to advance. "It was just a disaster of a race, all around, out there, but I'll learn a huge amount," said Healy who will now turn her attention to the 60m heats tomorrow morning.
Zak Curran (DSD) was the last of the Irish in action finishing fifth in his 800m heat in 1:50.87 and didn’t advance.
The men’s 60m hurdles heats were cancelled so that sees Ben Reynolds (North Down) competing in the semi-finals later this afternoon at 15:45
Ciara Mageean (UCD) battled her way through to the women’s 1500m final at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade.
It didn’t go to plan with Mageean finishing fourth in her heat in 4:12.81 to edge through as one of the three fastest non-automatic qualifiers. Sweden’s Meraf Bahta won in 4:12.39.
The Portaferry woman was in the top two automatic positions for most of the race but was run out at the finish.
“I didn’t want to leave it that late as a fastest loser. My plan was to get one or two but I’m through to the final and that’s all that matters,” said Mageean afterwards. Kerry O'Flaherty (Newcastle) finished 6th in 4:23.82 in heat three of the 1500m and didn’t advance.
John Travers (Donore Harriers), after stopping briefly on the first lap due to an apparent false start, finished seventh in 3:59.72 in the men's 1500m heat.
Brian Gregan (Clonliffe Harriers) was disappointed to finished sixth in his 400m semi-final in 48.08. Ben Reynolds (North Down) also bowed out in sixth in his 60m hurdles semi-final in 7.81 seconds.
Update:
John Travers through to 1500 final after appeal
John Travers (Donore Harriers) has advanced to the men’s 1500m final after an appeal following a seventh place finish in 3:59.72 in his heat.
A false start recall led to him stopping for several seconds along with Spanish athlete Marc Alcala. Team manager Patsy McGonagle successfully appealed afterwards where Alcala also advanced with the referee citing rule 146.3.

The February end-of-month Cork Athletics Registrations stand at 5,250, compared with the February 2016 end-of-month figure of 4,681, a rise of 12.16%.
Update March 2nd: Since the publication of this article, yesterday, it has come to light that at least 51 registrations, from newer clubs have not been included in the registration figures. In one case, all registrations by a new club have been omitted - these registrations are now visible to Cork Athletics. The matter has been taken up with Athletics Ireland HQ, and, hopefully, these registrations will be included in the next set of Registration figures published by Cork Athletics, in the next week or so. As of 2pm on Thursday March 2nd, Cork Registrations now stand at 5,315, excluding the 51 or so "missing" registrations, outlined above.
To date, forty nine of Cork's fifty three registered clubs have registered athletes, leaving just four clubs yet to register an athlete. Several new clubs have only recently received their Registration System log-in detals, so, in common with previous new clubs, they normally require additional time to bring their registrations 'to to speed'.
However established clubs, and their athletes, are reminded that the insurance dispensation, whereby the 2016 insurance cover continued until the end of January last, is no longer in force - unregistered athletes are NOT covered by the Athletics Ireland insurance for any purpose whatsoever, leaving those athletes and clubs in a precarious position.
While the rise in registrations to date has been phenomenal, some clubs have been very quick 'out of the starting blocks', with registrations well up and beyond last years figures, while others are still just 'taking off their tracksuits' and their registrations are, in some cases, well down on their respective February 2016 figures.
Clubs are reminded that 2017 registrations should be completed as soon as possible. There was a "grace period" of a few weeks, to allow sufficient time for re-registrations, whereby insurance cover continued, pending registration. This "grace period" does NOT extend beyond January 31st and does NOT include competition.
Therefore any athlete that remains unregistered beyond January 31st is NOT covered by Athletics Irelands insurance, for ANY purpose, training or competition.
Clubs are urged to register their athletes without further delay.
NB: The "grace period" covers official club, county, provincial and national training sessions. It does NOT cover competition. All athletes competing in Championship or representative events MUST be registered. Club Registrars are reminded that there is a new Registration System in operation.
Bandon AC and Leevale AC head the list, as usual, by a distance, Ballymore-Cobh-are in third place, with 314, while four more clubs exceed the 200 registrations mark, and another nine clubs have over 100 registered members.

Cork City Sports Honour Pat Walsh with Lifetime Achievement Award - Cork City Sports website
A man who has given over a quarter-of-a-century service to Cork athletics was honoured recently. On Friday February 16th, Pat Walsh was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual Cork City Sports Athletics Person of the Year function.
Pat Walsh, a native of Skibbereen, acted as treasurer of both the BLE and AAI Cork Athletics Boards from 1989 up until February of 2015.
In the early years of the event, Pat also got involved with the Evening Echo Women’s Mini-Marathon and has played a major role in its success, along with overseeing the purchase by the Cork Athletics Board of a cross-country course at Riverstick.
In presenting the award – introduced for the first time at the function – Frank Walley, President of the Cork City Sports had this to say about the recipient: “Here in Cork in athletics, as in all sporting codes, we are truly blessed to have such men and women who give of their time and put tremendous energy in making our sport so successful and enjoyable for all. Today we honour one of these stalwarts who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, unnoticed by many but who contributed enormously to the development of athletics.”
“I’m actually thrilled to get the award; it’s fantastic to get a thank-you given the high profile of this awards event,” said a delighted Pat. “I love to help others, I’ve seen young athletes coming through every year and representing Cork and representing Ireland and it’s nice to know that you’ve been involved in a small way in that process.”
Pat Walsh’s own involvement with athletics started off at school in the 1970s, and then with the local club. “I was born in Carrigfada and went to St Patrick’s National School in Market Street, then on to De La Salle before moving on to UCC where I did a civil engineering degree, finishing there in 1980.
“I suppose in the early days of the Skibbereen club, John McSweeney was an inspiration for us, himself and his brother Mike, along with John White, put a huge amount of work into the club and years and years into athletics.”
Before road running became as popular as it is today, Skibbereen AC was to the forefront in promoting this aspect of the sport. “We were one of the first clubs in West Cork to put on road races, mainly because we had the benefit of sponsorship from the likes of The Southern Star at the time,” says Pat.
From 1976 to 1982, as a member of the Skibbereen club, Pat competed in the many open sports meetings in the area, such as Caheragh, Aughadown and Clonakilty. During his time at UCC, he ran cross-country for the college and also competed on the track. In 1977 he won a county intermediate team medal and also won the West Cork 1500m ahead of Sean and Paul Harte.
Pat took up marathon running in 1981 during the initial running boom, completing a total of six in all including the Dublin Marathon of 1985 where he achieved his ambition of breaking three hours with a time of 2 hours 56 minutes.
After a spell working in Dublin, Pat returned to Cork and immediately got involved in the administrative side of the sport. Firstly, he became vice-chairman of the Cork County Board and then, in 1989, took on the position of treasurer which he held for a total of 26 years.
“I had been working in Dublin until 1985 and then when I moved back to Cork I first served as vice-chairman before taking on the position of treasurer. There was an awful lot going on, apart from the treasure’s work. I’ve been involved in the Evening Echo Women’s Mini-Marathon since 1987 but I must say all the way through I’ve received huge family support.
“When my three girls were young, they were all involved in the Mini-Marathon and they have also spent time at the gates of CIT collecting money and so on.”
One of Pat’s proudest moments came when the County Board purchased 36 acres near Riverstick, a project he played a major part in. Another huge addition to athletics was the building of the stand at CIT which Pat was also involved in.
“I remember going up to Dublin with Liam O’Brien and Paddy Buckley to meet the minister, John O’Donoghue, and we were very successful, getting €700,000 the first year and getting €200,000 the following year. Because in my profession I’m an engineer, I suppose I was involved more than I originally anticipated but it was good for the Board to have someone with that experience.”
Now acting as assistant treasurer, Pat is still as involved as ever in athletics despite his demanding position as Senior Executive Engineer with Cork County Council involved with water production for all of the North Cork region.
“There’s still an awful lot going on in athletics with more and more challenges but my family are still as involved as ever and that means an awful lot to me,” concludes Pat.

Ballycotton Running Promotions, organisers of the Ballycotton 10, announced, this afternoon, extra incentives for those in contention for the respective men and women's race titles. This year's race, the 40th annual running of the event, takes place on Sunday March 12th, 39 year to the day since the inaugural race.
Ballycotton Running Promotions Website
For the rest of us, who can only stand (run?) back in admiration of those who are competing at those levels, the main interest is now on receiving our race packets.
Filling of the envelopes is taking place in Midleton CBS this Thursday, February 23rd, primarily done by Midleton AC, but every set of hands will be very welcome. If you can spare even half an hour, just turn up at Midleton CBS from 6pm onwards.
This year, in an effort to raise the elite standard of the race and to celebrate the 40th annual event, there will be added time bonuses for the Ballycotton ‘10’ on March 12th.
Along with the usual first three prizes (€500, €300 and €200) for men and women and the course bonuses of €500 for a new record (men, Gary Staines 47:00; women, Maria McCambridge 54:20) the following bonuses will apply:
Men: If the winner, not breaking the course record, runs inside 48:30 there will be a bonus of €300. All other runners (outside of first three) breaking 50:00 will receive a bonus of €100 along with their prize.
Women: If the winner, not breaking the course record, runs inside 55:30 there will be a bonus of €300. All other women (outside of first three) breaking 58:00 will receive a bonus of €100 along with their prize.
Only one time bonus can apply for both men and women.
While the women’s course record has been improved three times by Maria McCambridge in the past five years, in contrast the men’s standard has shown little change. In the history of the race, 48:30 has been broken on a total of 29 occasions (including four times by Noel Berkeley).
Yet only two of those 29 times – Charles Kiplgat in 2004 and Dave Mitchinson in 2005 – has been set in the past 15 years so hopefully this year will see an improvement back to the standards of the past.
