As of yesterday, May 10th, Cork Athletics Registrations passed the 7,000 mark, with 7,007 registered Cork Athletics-Athletics Ireland members. In comparison with last year, the 7,000 mark wasn't exceeded until late August. The 2016 end of May figure was 6,481, while the May 2015 figure was 5,909, representing an increase of 8.6% on 2016, and 18.6% on 2015....and there's still almost three weeks to go to the end of May!
To date, fifty two of Cork's fifty three registered clubs have registered athletes, while Cork Athletics newest club, Ballinacurra Villagers AC, has, in the past few days, been set-up on the Athletics Ireland registration system. This will add further numbers, once their athletes are registered.
At the May meeting of Cork Athletics County Board, Registrar, John Copithorne, said that many coaches and officials are continuing to be actively involved in Athletics, but remain unregistered.
Unregistered athletes, coaches and/or officials are NOT covered by the Athletics Ireland insurance for any purpose whatsoever, leaving those athletes, officials, coaches and clubs in a precarious position.
Any club having difficulties registering their athletes should contact Cork Athletics Registrar, John Copithorne 0861713500
Clubs are reminded that 2017 registrations should be completed as soon as possible. There was a "grace period" of a few weeks, to allow sufficient time for re-registrations, whereby insurance cover continued, pending registration. This "grace period" does NOT extend beyond January 31st and does NOT include competition. Therefore any athlete remaining unregistered beyond January 31st is NOT covered by Athletics Irelands insurance, for ANY purpose, training or competition.
Clubs are urged to register all remaining unregistered personnel without further delay.
NB: The "grace period" covers official club, county, provincial and national training sessions. It does NOT cover competition. All athletes competing in Championship or representative events MUST be registered. Club Registrars are reminded that there is a new Registration System in operation.
Webmaster's Note: I have been 'Banging on' for ages about the Bandon Rugby Club case. The Irish Times reported on the case in April 1997. Twenty years later, the judgement is still as relevant, and stands out as a warning to the consequences of not registering members of an organisation. A further related Irish Times article advises clubs to ensure that members are registered.
Leevale AC head the list, ahead of Bandon AC, with both club having over 500 registered members, and each over 200 registrations ahead of third placed Ballymore-Cobh AC, with Midleton AC in fourth position, and Youghal AC in fifth, with the latter three clubs all having over 300 registered members. A further six clubs exceed the 200 registrations mark, and another sixteen clubs now have over 100 registered members.

Details of all Athletics Ireland Registered Road Races in Cork during May 2017
Cork Athletics registrations, as at April 30th, stood at 6,782, 9.82% up on the corresponding 2016 figure of 6,175. The figure in the plate above, 6,846 is today's figure, May 2nd 2017. These figures demonstrate the sustained growth in Cork Athletics' Registered membership.
However established clubs, and their athletes, are reminded that unregistered athletes are NOT covered by the Athletics Ireland insurance for any purpose whatsoever, leaving those athletes and clubs in a precarious position.
Leevale AC top the standings, by a small margin, from Bandon AC. Both clubs stand well ahead of all the other clubs, while Ballymore-Cobh AC and Midleton AC both exceed the 300 registered members mark. Seven more clubs have over 200 members, while a further sixteen clubs have over 100 members.

Cork City Sports Release
At the 1987 Cork City Sports, a young Sonia O’ Sullivan set a National Junior Record of 9:01, in the 3000m. This performance put Sonia on the map, and launched the career of the greatest athlete Ireland has ever produced.
Thirty years on, this Junior Record still stands. For the 2017 Cork City Sports, Sonia is laying down a challenge to all clubs to enter a team of junior girls to run a 3k relay, in an attempt to break her thirty-year-old 9:01 record.
The team must consist of five junior female athletes, from the same club, who will each run 600m. Cork City Sports is delighted to include this 3K challenge in the 2017 programme.

Cork Athletics intends holding a Timing course next week, on Wednesday 17th May, from 6:30pm, in CIT. The basics are that it will involve the Wednesday evening, and a Saturday morning, the day of the Munster Schools Track and Field Championships, on Saturday May 20th.
The course will be conducted by Karl O'Connell, who was, at last month's Athletics Ireland Annual Congress, along with Tim Ahern (Blarney-Inniscarra AC) and Padraig Kelly (Ballincollig AC), presented with his IAAF Level 1 (Athletics Ireland Level 5) certificate.
The evening session will deal with cabling and equipment set-up, while the Saturday morning session will be a real-time practical, in competition, session.
The intent of the course is to train-up new timing officials, to increase the pool of available Timing Officials. The course is open to all registered Athletics Ireland members. Those interested in doing this course should contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., as soon as possible.
The course will start with an introduction, the basic principles of the setup and operating - this is probably the easy part, it is only with practice and having to deal with issues that people will learn the system.
This approach is taken throughout the Athletics Ireland structure, Paul Stack for example would have started with county championships, then moved to Munster events, and eventually to National operator. So there is potential for operators to progress. Donal Murnane is another operator who has been trained , and is accredited for events up to Munster championships.
There are a number of Munster Championships, in CIT, during June, and these can be used as training days. Two systems would be used in parallel, the training system and the official system. This takes the pressure of the operators. Small groups, 2 or 3 max, would be involved in the practical sessions. This means they will actually operate the system, as opposed to just watching. Depending on the numbers interested, the training will be spread out over a period, to ensure that groups involved in the practical sessions are kept small.
It is hoped that newly trained officials would then progress onto the Athletics Ireland technology officials training, where other topics would be introduced; EDM, Field Terminals, Meet Manager systems, false start etc. Athletics Ireland Technical Officials range from Level 1 to 5, anf from there, to IAAF certification
Cork Athletics would hope to identify how many on the night have an aptitude for it and want to continue. Unfortunately this is not a quick training and away you go, it takes time, practice and patience.
Next Sunday, May 14th 2017, Day 2 of Cork Athletics County Juvenile Championships will be held in CIT. Cork Athletics invites persons interested in Timing to come forward and observe/assist in the meet timing. Those interested should make themselves known, on the day, to Cork Athletics Chairman, Bill Allen

Claire McCarthy (Leevale AC), Alex Wright (Leevale AC) and Rob Heffernan (Togher AC) are among those selected to represent Ireland at next August's World Athletics Championships, which will be held in London, from August 4th to 13th, 2017
Athletics Ireland Press Release - Feidhlim Kelly
Athletics Ireland is delighted to announce initial selections for the race walk and marathon for the World Athletics Championships in London in August.
Robert Heffernan (Togher) will lead a strong team of 50km race walkers alongside Brendan Boyce (Letterkenny) and Alex Wright (Leevale).
There is a full complement of men in the marathon with Mick Clohisey (Raheny Shamrock), Paul Pollock (Annadale Striders) and Sean Hehir (Rathfarnham WSAF) selected.
On the women’s side Fionnuala McCormack (Kilcoole) and Claire McCarthy (Leevale) have been selected for the classic distance.
High Performance Director Paul McNamara was pleased with the selections and said:
“I’m delighted to see an increase in the number of athletes selected for the pure endurance events at World Championship level, and the earlier selection date in 2017 allows selected athletes to now turn the focus of their attention to specific preparation for August’s World Championship.
"The Walks have proved to be the most successful event group at major championships for some time now and Rob, Alex and Brendan are a world class trio of 50km competitors who will make a big impact in London.
"I’m excited that the men’s Marathon sees a full complement of three athletes selected for the second global championships in-a-row. Paul and Mick will have benefitted enormously from their experience in Rio while Sean deserves particular commendation for his breakthrough in London this past Sunday.
"On the women’s side, Fionnuala had a superb Olympic Marathon, but may yet choose to focus on 10,000m for London 2017, while Claire will make her first appearance on the global stage after her breakthrough in Berlin in September. It’s important to acknowledge the contribution of Marathon Mission as a factor in the rapidly improving quality and depth in Irish marathoning and Athletics Ireland look forward to supporting them in this regard and to a fruitful relationship for the benefit of our elite athletes and coaches going forward.”
The Selection of the Marathon and the 50km Walks for the World Championships to take place in London from 4-13 August 2017 is as follows:

St Finbarrs AC - National M50 Road Relay Champions 2017
Athletics Ireland Release - Feidhlim Kelly
Sean Hehir (Rathfarnham) was the leading Irish finisher at the London Marathon this morning in 2:16:18 while Queen's University women and Raheny Shamrock men won the Irish Life Health National Road Relays in Raheny (April 23).
Hehir, from Clare, came through strongly to run a qualifying time for the World Championships in London in August and was followed home by Kevin Seaward (St Malachy's) in 2:17:08, Stephen Scullion (Clonliffe Harriers) in 2:17:59 and Mick Clohisey (Raheny Shamrock) in 2:18:34.
Laura Graham (Mourne Runners) was first of the Irish women home in 2:42:38 with Barbara Sanchez (Clonliffe Harriers) next in 2:47:36.
Day of drama as Queens and Raheny triumph at Road Relays
Drama and excitement. It’s what we’ve come to expect at the Irish Life Health National Road Relays in Raheny today (April 23) where Queen’s University women and Raheny Shamrock men came out on top in the senior races.
From the get go there was big changes in position with Annmarie McGlynn, who had a busy afternoon, guiding Letterkenny AC to the F35 title over 4 miles, 1-2-1 mile format, in a record time of 22:32.
The F50 women were also in action alongside their F35 counterparts and it was the Raheny Shamrock team of Adrienne Atkins, Orla Gormley and Nora Byrne who brought home the gold in 25:22 from Dundrum South Dublin in 25:44 and Finn Valley in 27:42.
The masters’ men were next and Raheny Shamrock were first across the line in the M35 in a new record of 19:28 with Ian Conroy getting them started followed by Michael McMahon and John Dunne on anchor.
St Finbarr’s team of Michael Murphy, Cathal O’Connell and Ken Devine clawed back Raheny in the M50 race with an excellent last leg by Ken Devine who clocked 4:59 to win gold for the Cork team in 21:13 overall. Raheny had to settle for silver in 21:21 with Rathafarnham WSAF third in 22:22.
This set the stage for the senior races with roads in Raheny lined with people on both sides and a palpable buzz in the air. Leevale came in as defending champions but it didn’t go to script. They were right in the hunt after Carol Finn’s first leg but no one accounted for Queen’s University who made their debut in the event. Emma Mitchell was in sparkling form on the 2 mile leg running 10:18 having taken over from Sinead Sweeney. This teed up Rebecca Henderson for a surprise victory.
The final race of the day in the senior men’s 8 mile saw high drama in the first lap of the first leg. The leading pack were bunched around 1km in when they came together and it saw Raheny Shamrock’s Mark Kirwan and Ennis Track’s Karl Fitzmaurice take a heavy fall losing track on the main pack.
Kirwan was visibly in pain, later learning that he had broken his collarbone, but gathered himself to be in touching distance of the leaders at the changeover for the one mile leg. Kieran Kelly took over and blitzed the 1 lap circuit in 4:20 to put the defending champions back in the lead.
It was then down to the crucial 3 mile leg with Kevin Dooney now carrying the mantle with Donore Harriers’ John Travers in hot pursuit. Travers was in form and sped around the 3 mile leg in 14:04 to equal the course record and bringing Donore into the lead. Dooney hung on gamely and handed over to his brother Conor who had to chase down Eric Keogh on the last 2 mile leg.
With one lap to go Keogh looked menacingly calm sitting in behind Conor Dooney who had turned from hunter to hunted. The aficionados were awaiting the return of the duo leaning towards Keogh but it was Dooney who had enough at the finish to hold off by one second and guide home the host club in 37:38. Donore Harriers had to settle for silver in 37:39 with Kilkenny City Harriers third in 38:10. Raheny Shamrock won the Paddy Boland trophy for the best overall trophy on a day where competition and participation combined seamlessly.
