General Update

This year, the Marathon moves to Sunday, following the lead of the 2016 Dublin Marathon. To-date, entries for all categories are up on last year, however the usual last-minute rush is yet to come.  With Friday's early-bird deadline looming, the incentive of a €10 discount normally leads to a spike in entries, so, after this weekend, the numbers trend should become clearer.

Course Measurement & Management/Stewarding

Course measurement is in progress, and the route is currently being 'tweaked' to ensure that the Marathon Start and Finish are on Patrick St.  The change from a Monday to a Sunday has brought many 'headaches' which need to be resolved;

Last year's route went past many churches and other places of worship of many denominations. This wasn't a major problem in previous years, due to the Monday, however this year's Sunday event means that the route must avoid many of the churches, and, where this is just impossible, traffic management solutions have had to be developed to deal with the situation.

Last weekend saw much of the Marathon measurement taking place under Garda protection, with traffic on the South Link, South Ring, including the Jack Lynch Tunnel, and the Tivoli Dual-Carrigeway, being held back by a protective shield of Garda jeeps and squad cars, while the course was being measured, along the shortest possible route, ahead of the Garda barrier.

Half-Marathon

The Half-Marathon route has yet to be finalised. The route has been finalised, however necessary changes, as outlined above, to the Marathon route may give rise to small changes in the planned route.  While details of this year's route won't be disclosed until all measurement has been complete and signed off, Cork City Marathon have resolved that the Half-Marathon start will not be complicated by turns and switchbacks close to the start.  While not 'giving anything away', that's as revealing as it's going to get for now. ----Watch this space!

The change to Sunday has also brought personnel resource complications; Sunday generally means a reduced Garda availability, so more non-Garda personnel are required to manage/steward the route.  Further pressure is being put on resources as there is a Munster Athletics Championship event in Ennis, on Marathon day, depleting the Cork Athletics crew, and, in particular, experienced key personnel.  Consequently Cork Athletics is asking for volunteers to assist on the day.  Indeed volunteers are not limited to Cork Athletics, as another Cork City Marathon partner, Cork BHAA, and the Cork City Marathon itself also seek volunteers, so, if you are available, why not approach any of the groups. [A special Volunteer Appeal will be posted on the Cork Athletics website in the next few days]

The Irish Intermediate Boys (Under 17) team, who ran 6260m,

The recent AIT International Grand Prix athletics meeting in Athlone will air on TG4 this coming Friday night at 7:30pm.

Another full-house packed into the impressive indoor arena at Athlone Institute of Technology to witness the fourth running of Ireland's premier indoor athletics event, featuring former world and Olympic sprint hurdles champion Sally Pearson, 800m World Championship silver-medallist Melissa Bishop, Morton Games winner and Olympic finalist Ryan Gregson, and one of the fastest women in the world this year over 60 metres, Christina Manning.

European Championship bronze-medallist from last summer, Ciara Mageean, ace sprinter Phil Healy, European Championship 4th-placer Paul Robinson and Euro Indoors veteran John Travers were the biggest Irish names competing.

Despite there being no live coverage on Irish television this year - it aired live in previous years on the now defunct IrishTV - the AIT Grand Prix still went out live in five European countries on Fox Sports TV, alongside a live stream, plus highlights in Ireland on eirSport, in the UK on Premier Sports, in the Netherlands and Italy on their respective Fox Sports channels, and in 25 countries across Africa on Fox Sports Africa.

Next Friday night's broadcast marks a return to athletics coverage for TG4 after last airing the Irish Schools Track and Field in 2010, and is the first Irish Grand Prix meeting in twelve years to be broadcast on one of the "big four" terrestrial channels, after the 2005 Cork City Sports.

Commentary will come from the usual independent television athletics team of Will Downing, Jessie Barr and Dick Hooper, with reporting from Mark Rodden of Eurosport.

Cork Athletics Registration Figures - March 23rd 2017

Record Cork Athletics Registration Figures - March 23rd 2017

Cork Reg Plate March 23rd 2017

As of today, March 23rd, Cork Athletics Registrations stand at 6,059.  The March 2016 end-of-month figure was 5,609, therefore March registrations are over 8% up on last year, with eight days to go to the end of March.

To date, fifty one of Cork's fifty three registered clubs have registered athletes, leaving just two clubs yet to register an athlete.  These clubs, Fota Island Running Club and Ballinacurra Villagers Running Club, and their athletes, are reminded that the insurance dispensation, whereby the 2016 insurance cover continued until the end of January last, is no longer in force - unregistered athletes are NOT covered by the Athletics Ireland insurance for any purpose whatsoever, leaving those athletes and clubs in a precarious position.

Any club having difficulties registering their athletes should contact Cork Athletics Registrar, John Copithorne.

2017 Athletics Ireland Registrations are now Due

Clubs are reminded that 2017 registrations should be completed as soon as possible. There was a "grace period" of a few weeks, to allow sufficient time for re-registrations, whereby insurance cover continued, pending registration.  This "grace period" does NOT extend beyond January 31st and does NOT include competition.

Therefore any athlete that remains unregistered beyond January 31st is NOT covered by Athletics Irelands insurance, for ANY purpose, training or competition.
Clubs are urged to register their athletes without further delay.

NB: The "grace period" covers official club, county, provincial and national training sessions.  It does NOT cover competition. All athletes competing in Championship or representative events MUST be registered.  Club Registrars are reminded that there is a new Registration System in operation.

Overall Registrations as at March 23rd 2017

Bandon AC and Leevale AC head the list, as usual, by a distance, with each club having over 500 registered members.  Two clubs, Ballymore Cobh AC and Midleton AC, have over 300 registered members, while a further four clubs exceed the 200 registrations mark, and another eleven clubs now have over 100 registered members. Two clubs have yet to register any athlete.
