Blarney-Inniscarra AC athlete, Dean Cronin, on scholarship at Fort Hays State University, in Kansas City, U.S.A., has been co-named as Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Men's Track Athlete of the Week, after setting a Fort Hays State University 800m record, running a time of 1:50.27

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State junior Dean Cronin has been named the MIAA Men's Co-Track Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, Feb 14th. He shares the honor this week with distance runner Vincent Kiprop from Missouri Southern.
Cronin set a new Fort Hays State University record in the 800 meters by running a time of 1:50.27 at the Concordia Invitational in Seward, Nebraska.
Due to the track size, the time was converted down to 1:48.72 giving him an automatic qualifying mark and the second-fastest time in the nation. He won the event, but teammate Brett Meyer was right on his heels, who also ran an automatic qualifying time. That gives Fort Hays State University two of the three runners nationally to post automatic qualifying times in the 800 this season. Cronin already has set four new individual records at Fort Hays State University for the indoor season in the mid-distances after transferring to Fort Hays State University at the beginning of the spring semester.
At Pittsburg State, Vincent Kiprop broke his own 3000-meter record by more than 13 seconds as he placed second with a time of 8:04.04. That mark ranks second nationally, and tops in the MIAA.
Fort Hays State made double-digit spot jumps in the polls, coming in at 20th, respectively.
Fort Hays State’s ranking is the highest in program history, and it can be attributed to Decano (Dean) Cronin and Brett Meyer in the 800 meters. The duo posted the 2nd and 3rd fastest times in the event in Division II, respectively, this past weekend at the Concordia Invite. The Tigers ranked 49th a week ago.

Alex Wright (Leevale AC) won today's National Indoor 5k Race Walk Championships, at the new National Indoor Arena, in Abbotstown, Dublin, breaking Rob Heffernan's record of 18:51.46, which Rob set at the National Indoor Championships, in Belfast, in January 2008.
Alex's winning time was 18:50.70. Westport AC's Cian McManamon was second, in 20:06.21, with Brendan Boyce (Letterkenny) taking Bronze in 20:09.28.

Mageean Wins Quality 3000m on Record-Breaking Day
Ciara Mageean (UCD) won a high-quality women’s 3,000m in 9:08.83 and there were two new Irish records on the first day of an engaging Irish Life Health National Indoor Championships in the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena.
Alex Wright (Leevale) broke race walking legend Robert Heffernan’s (Togher) 5,000m record to win gold in 18:50.70 while Sharlene Mawdsley (Newport) broke the national junior 200m record to win her heat in 23.85.
The women’s 3,000m was the highlight race with three Olympians toeing the line and multiple internationals including two-time European Cross Country Champion Fionnuala McCormack (Kilcoole).
The Wicklow woman, who ran the Barcelona half marathon last week, lead the opening stages of the race with Mageean and Leevale’s Olympic steeplechaser Michelle Finn in close pursuit. Around the halfway stage Finn split the pack and only Mageean could hold on to the pace. The UCD woman eased away in the final 400m to win in 9:08.83 to Finn’s 9:12.61 with McCormack third in 9:15.58.
“I was happy with that especially with the field,” said Mageean who has had a difficult week battling with a head cold and the passing of her granny in Portaferry. “It’s been difficult and I’ll probably be coughing all the way home to Portaferry tonight but at least I have something to show for it.”
Kate Veale (West Waterford) was a popular first winner on the track with the former world youth champion on top of the podium in the women’s 3,000m race walk in 14:03.90 from Emma Prendiville (Farranfore Maine Valley) in 14:06.54 and Maeve Curley (Craughwell) in 14:18.26.
“I’m really happy to be back. I’ve a long way to go to get back to my best but I’ve made my first steps,” said Veale afterwards. “I rejected the rigid athlete lifestyle but I’m happy to be back and want to make up for lost time.”
Alex Wright has been in excellent form this indoor season and made it three wins from three starts. “It’s been a great season so far and I’m racing a 20km in Switzerland next week,” said Wright afterwards. “I’ll look to focus on one event come the world championships in London this summer.
Michaela Walsh (Swinford) won the women’s shot put with an indoor personal best of 14.95m and the fifth year schoolgirl was happy with the win. “The shot put is more difficult indoors and I was happy to get a personal best today.”
Mid Sutton’s Sarah McCarthy won the women’s long jump as expected with a best of 6.03m while Sommer Lecky (Finn Valley) continued her fine form with a personal best of 1.81m in the women’s high jump.
In the men’s field events Antony Daffurn (St Ronan’s) won the triple jump with a best of 14.83m and Thomas Houlihan (West Waterford) added the national senior title to his University crown with 4.75m.
There was a number of exciting heats with Sharlene Mawdsley winning her 200m heat in 23.85 while Phil Healy (Bandon) and Sinead Denny (DSD) qualified comfortably in the women’s 400m. Brian Gregan (Clonliffe Harriers) was impressive in the men’s 400m heats with a time of 47.11 seconds.

Athletics Person of the Month - January 2016
Claire Gibbons-McCarthy (Leevale AC) was presented with the Cork City Sports Cork Athlete for the month of January. Claire won the Waterford Half Marathon in a personal best time of 1:16:45 on the 9th January. She subsequently went on to improve on this in the Barcelona International Half Marathon in February with a very impressive time of 1:15:18, securing victory in the Over 35 section.
Athletics Person of the Month - February 2016
Phil Healy (Bandon AC and UCC) was the Cork City Sports Athlete for the Month of February. Phil’s achievements for that month were outstanding, she had a busy month of indoor racing at the ultra-modern Athlone IT Indoor track culminating in a double gold medal performance at the national senior championships in the 60m and 200m. Making a welcome return to top class sprinting form again Phil began the month of February by winning both the 60m and 200m at the national Under 23 championships on the 3rd of the month. Three days later she set a new national under 23 record of 7.35sec for the 60m. at a National League event. The following day she won the 200m at the AAI games. On the 12th of February Phil won the Inter Varsity 200m title. and on the 17th she came a very credible 4th at the AIT International Grand Prix 60m
Athletics Person of the Month - March 2016
The March award went to Mark Hanrahan (Leevale AC). Hanrahan won the prestigious Ballycotton 10 mile road race in a very creditable time of 49min 01sec. He was subsequently selected on the Irish Half-Marathon team for the European Championships in Amsterdam.

In April the Leevale Women’s road relay team were awarded the Cork City Sports Athlete Of the Month Award. The team composed of sisters Michelle & Carol Finn and Lizzie Lee, recorded their 3rd victory in a row at the National Road Relay in Dublin defeating a fancied Crusaders AC in the process.
Athletics Person of the Month - May 2016
Leevale coach, Donie Walsh was the recipient of the May award. Donie was selected to travel to Rio as the Athletics Ireland endurance coach joining two of his athletes Lizzie Lee and Michelle Finn will be competing in the marathon & 3000m steeplechase respectively. Donie was returning to the Olympics a mere 44 years after he competed in the marathon in Munich in 1972
Athletics Person of the Month - June 2016
Charlie O’Donovan of Leevale AC was the June award winner. Charlie received the award for winning the Junior 1500m at the 65th Cork City Sports in an outstanding time of 3:54:36. This time was inside the qualifying standard for European Youth Championships in Tbilisi and earned him selection for the Irish team.
Athletics Person of the Month - July 2016
The July awards went to Daragh McElhinney of Bantry AC and Colaiste Pobail Bheanntrai. Darragh had an excellent performance in the 1500m at the Schools Home International, in Kent, where he produced a stunning finish to take victory in a high class field. Darragh was one of just four Irish winners in the top quality international event.
Athletics Person of the Month - August 2016
Togher AC athlete Robert Heffernan was the Cork City Sports athlete of the month for August 2016. Robert travelled to Rio to take part in his fifth Olympic games to compete in the 50K race walk. The race was a gruelling event in the Brazilian heat and humidity in which 30% of the athletes were unable to finish the 50K distance. Robert finished 6th in a time of 3:43:55.

The September award went to Emma Murphy of St. Finbarr’s Athletic Club. Emma was the clear winner of the 35th Evening Echo Women’s Mini Marathon in a time of 22:03 which was held on the streets of Cork on the 25th September.
Athletics Person of the Month - October 2016
Sinead Kevany of Midleton AC was the Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month for October. Sinead was an impressive winner of both the Cork County and Munster Novice Cross Country Championships in that month.
Athletics Person of the Month - November 2016
Carmel Parnell of Leevale AC was the November recipient. Carmel is one of the most consistent performers in the history of the British and Irish Master Home International Cross Country. In November, she competed in Glasgow and won her 8th consecutive and 11th overall age group title. Carmel won the Over 60 section along with leading Ireland to a team victory as well
Athletics Person of the Month - December 2016
Vicki Cusack (Davis College, Mallow and Liscarroll AC) was the Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month for December. At the Athlone IT indoor track, Vicki was a member of the Irish Intermediate Girls Schools Team that finished second at the Home International Combined Events competition. Vicki earned her place on the team by finishing 3rd in the Irish Championships the previous month.
As of February 14th, Cork Athletics Registrations stand at 4,731, compared with the February 2016 end-of-month figure of 4,681, which augurs well for the full February figures, due in two weeks.
To date, forty five of Cork's fifty three registered clubs have registered athletes, leaving eight clubs yet to register an athlete. These clubs, and their athletes, are reminded that the insurance dispensation, whereby the 2016 insurance cover continued until the end of January last, is no longer in force - unregistered athletes are NOT covered by the Athletics Ireland insurance for any purpose whatsoever, leaving those athletes and clubs in a precarious position.
Some clubs have been very quick 'out of the starting blocks', while others are still just 'taking off theri tracksuits'
Clubs are reminded that 2017 registrations should be completed as soon as possible. There was a "grace period" of a few weeks, to allow sufficient time for re-registrations, whereby insurance cover continued, pending registration. This "grace period" does NOT extend beyond January 31st and does NOT include competition.
Therefore any athlete that remains unregistered beyond January 31st is NOT covered by Athletics Irelands insurance, for ANY purpose, training or competition.
Clubs are urged to register their athletes without further delay.
NB: The "grace period" covers official club, county, provincial and national training sessions. It does NOT cover competition. All athletes competing in Championship or representative events MUST be registered. Club Registrars are reminded that there is a new Registration System in operation.

John Cussen went to his eternal reward on Friday 10th February, just weeks before the 65th anniversary of the founding of Old Abbey AC, of which he was one of the key founding members. The club was founded on 29th February 1952.
At the time of his death, John was President of Old Abbey AC. He was the club's first Chairman and, during his 65 years with Old Abbey, had always filled an admin position with the club - never being without a role.
John's athletic prowess was primarily in the High Jump, a tradition and passion he passed down to his grandchildren. After retiring from active participation in athletics, John devoted his energies to providing "unbelieveable support for athletes". He was described, by Old Abbey coach John Cronin, as "always looking out for Old Abbey", and being "always focussed on the athletes". He was a "gentle giant" and the "main 'go-to' man". John described him as "mad about local sports".
Jimmy Murray, Rising Sun AC, and a former member of Old Abbey AC, reiterated John Cronin's sentiments, saying that he was a "great man for the parish, being involved in fundraising for many parish and charity activities. In addition to athletics, he also had a passion for Road Bowling.

Sadly missed by his loving family, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, sisters-in-law Sheila and Pat, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Lying in repose at the Wilton Funeral Home, Sarsfield Road of Jerh. O’Connor Ltd. from Monday, Removal at 7pm (same day) to the Church of the Most Holy Heart of Mary, Goggin’s Hill. Requiem Mass at 11am on Tuesday. Funeral afterwards to adjoining cemetery.

The Cork Athletics Annual International Awards presentation took place in the Imperial Hotel, South Mall, Cork, on Friday February 10th 2017. The awards are made to Cork athletes who have represented Ireland in athletics, during the previous twelve months.
Along with the International Awards, training bursaries are presented to Aspiring Young Athletes, selected on several criteria, including significant athletic achievement, progression and application to their chosen athletic discipline(s).
The leading athletes, and other prizewinners, from Cork Athletics Graded Leagues, sponsored by John Buckley Sports, were also presented with their prizes.

Phil Healy (Bandon AC) won today's National Indoor 400m Championships, at the new National Indoor Arena, in Abbotstown, Dublin, with a PB of 53.49 sec. This was inside the qualification standard set for next month's European Indoor Championships, at the Kombank Arena, Belgrade, Serbia, from March 3rd to 5th next.

Phil has already made the European Indoor qualification time for the 60m, running 7.40sec, set in Round 1 of the Athletics Ireland National Leagues, in January.
Highlight of yesterday's action was Leevale AC's Alex Wright's 5k Race Walk Record of 18:50.70 Other notable Cork performances were; Silver in the Womens 3,000m for Michelle Finn (Leevale), in 9:12.61, with Silver in the Womens 60m for Joan Healy (Bandon), in 7.45 sec, and, in the Mens events, Silver for 2. David Tierney (Leevale), with a throw 14.85m.

John Travers (Donore Harriers) thrilling sprint finish with Paul Robinson (St Coca's) to win the 1500m embodied a competitive and exciting Irish Life Health National Indoor Championships at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena.
The weekend was full of drama and excitement in an arena that fit the bill for both athletes and spectators alike.
John Travers pounced in the final meters to win the men's 1500m in 3:50.44 to Robinson's 3:50.55 with Cillian Kirwan (Raheny Shamrock) getting up for bronze in 3:54.65. European Indoor bound Kerry O'Flaherty (Newcastle) was a comfortable winner in the women's 1500m in 4:20.86.
Ciara Neville (Emerald) added the senior women's 60 title to her junior crown in an even closer finish. The Castletroy schoolgirl recovered to win in a photo finish in 7.43 seconds from Bandon’s Joan Healy and Molly Scott (SLOT) who were both given the same time of 7.45. Healy was given the nod for second ahead of Scott after an official review.
Womens 400m: Phil Healy (Bandon) narrowly missed out on the national 60m record at the Athlone International last Wednesday finishing third in 7.31 seconds but had the satisfaction of winning the women’s 400m final ahead of Sinead Denny (DSD) in a European indoor qualifying time of 53.49 seconds. Denny also dipped under the standard (53.75) in 53.74.
Brian Gregan (Clonliffe Harriers) won the men’s 400m in 46.59 holding off his new clubmate Luke Lennon-Ford who is currently in the process of being cleared to compete for Ireland. Lennon-Ford, second in 47.05.
Leon Reid (Menapians), also looking to compete for Ireland, chalked up an impressive sprint double winning the 60m in 6.74 seconds and the 200m in 21.08.
Sharlene Mawdsley (Newport) followed up her junior 200m record (23.85) in the heats by edging Sarah Carthy (Mid Sutton), who won gold in the long jump with 6.03m, in 24.04 to 24.06.
Kieran Kelly (Raheny Shamrock) won his first national title in the men's 800m 1:56.00 in a blistering last 200m while Fiona Kehoe (Kilmore) won a fascinating tussle in the women's 800m in 2:08.17.
Ben Reynolds (North Down), another set for the European Indoors in Belgrade March 3-5, was a classy winner of the men's 60m hurdles in 7.83 seconds while Adam McMullen (Crusaders) won his sixth successive long jump title with a best of 7.59m. Elizabeth Morland (Cushinstown) won the women's 60m hurdles in 8.50 seconds.
Ellen McCartney (City of Lisburn) won the women's pole vault on countback with 3.40m while John Kelly (Finn Valley) won the men's shot put with a best of 17.02m.
In the first race of the day Eoin Everard (Kilkenny City Harriers) successfully defended his 3,000m title in 8:19.69. Saragh Buggy (St Abban's) won her second national indoor triple jump title with 12.86m and Ryan Carthy Walshe (Adamstown) cleared 2.00m to win the men's high jump on countback. Yesterday Sommer Lecky (Finn Valley) equalled Deirdre Ryan's national junior record to win the women's high jump with 1.81m.

Pat Walsh (Cork Athletics, Cork City Sports and Skibbereen AC), has been honoured by Cork City Sports, for his lifetime contribution to athletics, across a wide spectrum, with the award of the first ever Cork City Sports Lifetime Achievement Award.
Cork City Sports Frank Walley, President Cork City Sports, read the citation at the awards function, "Today we honour one of these stalwarts of the sport, who work tiredlessly behind the scenes, unnoticed by many, but who contribute enormously to the development of athletics.
Today we honour Pat Walsh for his twenty six years service to Cork Athletics. We look back, in honour, at Pat's involvement in athletics"
Frank went on to outline some of Pat's considerable contribution; Pat first became involved in Schools athletics in the 1970's, competing in the Munster Colleges 200m. He was a regular competitor at the many local sports meets, held throughout west Cork, during that period. Following this, he ran cross-country for UCC, and became the west Cork Divisional 1500m Champion, beating renowned athletes, such as Sean and Paul Harte. Pat ran six marathons in all, culminating with a lifetime best of 2:56.
Pat became involved in the administration of athletics, initially holding the office of Vice-Chairman of BLE (precursor of Athletics Ireland). In 1987 he was elected Treasurer of the County Board, a position he held until 2016. (He has stepped only very slightly, currently holding the office of Assistant Treasurer).
Pat has been the main driving force behind the Cork Athletics Mini-Marathon, having first been appointed to the organising committee in 1989. He was also a prime mover in both the purchase and development of Cork Athletic's grounds, at Slieveroe, Riverstick, and also, as a member of the CIT Track Management Committee, the development of the spectator stand, administration building and indoor warm-up area at the CIT track. He is also Chief Judge, in charge of the Finish Line Officials at Cork City International Sports meet.
"Pat is a well deserving recipient of the Cork City Sports Lifetime Achievement Award for his huge contribution to athletics over so many years. It now gives me great pleasure to present Pat with this prestigious award."

Michael Harty, representing Cork, along with his club, East Cork AC, romped to victory at today's National Masters Cross-Country Championships, at Waterford IT's Carriganore Campus, leading Cork's M35 Team to National Gold, and East Cork AC to Team Bronze. Michael's winning margin was considerable.
Leevale AC's Tim Twomey also featured highly, taking the Silver Medal. The other four scorers on the Cork Team were: Michael Herlihy (North Cork AC), Kenneth Kelleher (East Cork AC), Paul Moloney (Mallow AC) and Michael Harrington (Bantry AC)
Cork Masters Men M35 Team, with Bill Allen and Paddy Buckley
Carmel Crowley (Bandon AC), in eight place, led Cork to the Women's F35 Title, with Sinead Kevaney (Midleton AC), 11th, followed by Ruth Millerick (Youghal AC) in thirteenth place, with her clubmate, Evelyn Cashman in twenty second place.
Ruth and Evelyn led Youghal AC to the F35 Women's Title, with 135 points, just a single point ahead of Sli CualannAC on 136. Hot favourites, Sportsworld AC, were third, with 145 points, while Mallow AC, with 145 points, were hot on their heels.
Cork's M50 Team took the Bronze Medals, however details are not yet to hand.

Rosemary Ryan (Dooneen) and Michael Harty (East Cork) delivered master class performances at the Irish Life Health National Masters Cross Country Championships in Waterford IT today which also incorporated the National Juvenile B Championships.
Elsewhere this weekend Fionnuala McCormack (Kilcoole) was fifth in the Barcelona half marathon in 71:35 while Saragh Buggy (St Abban's) set a personal of 13.08m for second place in the triple jump at the British Indoor trials for second on the Irish all-time list.
Sinead Denny (DSD) ran 53.73 over 400m to run a European Indoor qualifying time while her clubmate Siofra Cleirigh Buttner continued her fine form in the States winning a mile in Staten Island, New York in 4:33.16.

Ryan and Harty deliver Master class
Rosemary Ryan (Dooneen) and Michael Harty (East Cork) had the glory of being first across the line in the Irish Life Health Masters Cross Country Championships in Waterford IT today which also hosted the Juvenile B Championships.
Harty dominated over 7,000m with a winning time of 23:24 to take the O35 title proving his stint of altitude training in Iten, Kenya was a successful one.
Rosemary Ryan, who represented Ireland over 5,000m in the Sydney 2000 Olympics, rolled back the years to win the women’s 4,000m race in 14:51 and with it the O40 title. Sara Doohan (Corran) was first O35 and second across the line with Barbara Cleary (Donore Harriers) third past the post overall and second O40.
Carmel Crowley (Bandon) finished eighth overall and first O45 – one place and four seconds ahead of Tullamore Harriers’ Pauline Curley. Niamh O’Sullivan (An Riocht), Anne Sullivan (DMP) and Carmel Parnell (Leevale) showed their class in winning their respective O50, O55 and O60 categories.
Youghal AC pipped Sli Cualann by a single point in the women’s O35 team battle with Sportsworld a close third. Cork finished best of the counties. In the women’s O50 age group, DSD came out on top, beating An Riocht and Mayo AC.
Back to the men and it was An Riocht’s Tim O’Connor second across the line and first O40 with Tim Twomey of Leevale third over the line. Ian Conroy led Raheny Shamrock to M35 team victory finishing fourth overall. Raheny also won the O50 title with Damian Martin leading them home.
Peter Mathews (DSD) was first O45 in 24:15 and 8th overall. Winning the M50 title was pre-race favourite Pauric McKinney (Inishowen) as was JJ Murphy of Tinryland in the O65 categord with Galway’s Martin McEvilly second and Jim Patterson of Newcastle and District third and first M70.

Lucy Lynch (Carraig na Bhfear) and Alan McCutcheon (Dooneen) won the first races of the day in the U11 age group. Claragh Keane (DMP) and Callum McElhinney (Bantry) won the U13 races - McElhinney is the younger brother of Darragh who recently set an Irish youth 3,000m record.
Doireann ni Fhlatharta (Dunboyne) and Tadgh Donnelly (Drogheda & District) were top of the pile in the U15 races with Isabelle Cummins (Ferrybank) and Ben Carr (Finn Valley) coming out on top in the U17 ranks.

The Irish Life Health National Masters and Juvenile B Cross Country Championships rounds out the main club season over the terrain in Waterford I.T. this Sunday (February 12).
Sara Doohan (Corran) is one of the leading entrants in the women’s O35 category with Sportsworld among the leading teams as they bid to stay on top of the overall club cross country league this weekend.
Rosaleen McKeown (Leevale) and Niamh Fitzgerald (Lucan Harriers) are among those listed in the F40 category while Carmel Crowley (Bandon) will be looking to excel in the F45 section. Other strong contenders in the F45 are Annette Kealy (Raheny Shamrock), Donna Mahon (Rathfarnham WSAF) and Pauline Curley (Tullamore Harriers).
Niamh O’Sullivan (An Riocht) has been carving out a name as a coach in recent times with the successes of her star pupil Shona Heaslip but she will be a force to be reckoned with in the F50. Carmel Parnell (Leevale) will look to continue her dominance in the F60 section.
Michael Harty leads a strong East Cork team in the men’s O35 age group where Brian Maher (Kilkenny City Harriers) will be the strong favourite to be first across the line. Paul Fleming (Rathfarnham) is down for the M40 and could spring a surprise in good running conditions.
Peter Mathews (DSD) will have no concerns with the surface in the M45 section. The DSD man famously won the national senior cross country title in ALSAA in 2002 in a mud bath against Seamus Power with the image making front page news.
Pauric McKinney (Inishowen) and Mick Traynor (Raheny Shamrock) are among those listed in the M50. Tom O’Connor (Liffey Valley) is among the M55 field while Martin McEvilly (Galway City Harriers) will be a leading contender in the M65. Regulars Terry Mee (Donore Harriers) and Pat Bonass (Clonliffe Harriers) will be among the ranks in the M70 section.
The Juveniles will get the action underway with the U11 girls 1,000m at 11:30am.
