Marathon Advice - Recovery

Cork Athletics Webmaster's Advice for Marathon Recovery

0421 boston marathon12

Recovery after the Marathon
Recovery begins IMMEDIATELY after you cross the line

Important!! First Thing!!

  •     Think on your feet! You will be VERY tired. Heed the advice in this section
  •     Keep moving once you cross the line. The lactic acid debt will hit you pretty quick, and all movement will help clear it

bananas running race marathon

  •     After you finish (and you will!), make sure to eat something. Try to get some carbohydrates into you within 15 minutes of finishing - it'll kick start your body's recovery. Leave it later and your digestive system will start to shut down - safeguard mode. Replace lost fluids and energy as soon as possible. Drink plenty and try to eat foods with plenty of carbohydrates; bananas, pasta, bread, etc.

post marathon food

  •     Keep warm, remember to pack a fleece or jumper, t-shirt, leggings, hat, socks and, maybe, gloves. If the day is wet, a change of shoes will be needed. If all this doen't fit into the 'drop bag', give the non-essentials to someone who will meet you afterwards. You'll feel cold very quickly afterwards, so wrap up well, ideally in layers.
  • Every year, I see people trudging home, sometimes 2 or 3 miles away from the finish, simply dressed in the singlet and shorts they ran the Marathon in, proudly wearing their medal around their neck.  DON'T be the one to forget to pack something to wear AFTER the event. Sure you'll get a Technical Top. You can wear that...but it isn't enough to keep you warm. Bring more...Layers are best!
  •     Have someone meet you at a prearranged spot to give you dry clothes or to take extra layers. The finish area is mayhem! Know exactly where you are meeting friends and family! Have a backup location in case, for whatever reason, the first location is, say, closed to either runners or spectators.
  • Hyponatraemia - Arises from drinking too much water. This is more likely to affect those who are out on the course longer, or who may not have balanced their fluid intake, in the lead-up. Hyponatremia occurs when the concentration of sodium in your blood is abnormally low. Sodium is an electrolyte, and it helps regulate the amount of water that's in and around your cells. In hyponatremia, one or more factors — ranging from an underlying medical condition to drinking too much water — cause the sodium in your body to become diluted. When this happens, your body's water levels rise, and your cells begin to swell. This swelling can cause many health problems, from mild to life-threatening.

    marathoners after finishing
  • Symptoms - Hyponatremia signs and symptoms may include:

        Nausea and vomiting
        Headache
        Confusion
Loss of energy, drowsiness and fatigue
        Restlessness and irritability
        Muscle weakness, spasms or cramps
        Seizures
        Coma

    When to see a doctor

Seek emergency care for anyone who develops severe signs and symptoms of hyponatremia, such as nausea and vomiting, confusion, seizures, or lost consciousness

If YOU see someone in distress, please alert the Medics along the course.  At, and after, the finish there will be lots of paramedics about. DON'T assume that someone else has alerted them.

Later

blister stages

  •     It is unwise to pop your blisters until after you shower, to prevent infection. Use a sterilized needle to pop two slits on opposite sides of the blister and leave the roof on. Lubricate the area with antibiotic ointment, and only cover them if you absolutely needed. (Second Skin or Compeed work best.) Leaving the blisters open and soaking in Epsom Salts also dries them out faster. If you have black and blue toenails, drain them as soon as possible, and you may be able to save your toenails and avoid a lot of unnecessary pain.

ice bath brrr young woman exercising in gym royalty free image 1568409910

  •     Alternate hot and cold soaks, and get a massage. Use a foam roller (lightly) and a "stick" or pastry roller.

  •     Congrats on finishing! Rule of thumb for recovery is 1 day for every mile, that doesn't mean don't do anything but don't plan to race or run hard any time soon. Take it easy!
  • Anti-inflammatory such as Aleve or Advil (as long as you are not allergic or have ulcers) will help ease your pain in the first post-marathon week. Getting a massage helps flush out all the waste products in your muscles.
  •     It may be wise not to resume running until all of the soreness is gone from your legs. Use your judgment about when to resume running. Basically, if anything is swollen or bruised, or if you experience sharp pains when you resume running, stop!
  •     Eat a bit more and sleep a bit more. You need the building blocks for muscle repair, and your body does most of its repair work when you're sleeping

The Day After the Marathon

  •     Rather than spin the day after the race, swim or deep water run. You loosen your muscles up a bit without putting any pressure on the joints.
  •     If, like me, you are prone to cold-sores, you will be very prone to them after the marathon. If you swim in the few days afterward, you should apply a lip protector or Vaseline. It helps to lightly smear Vaseline into and around openings of your nostrils. Bet the rest of you are glad you don't get cold-sores - lucky buggers!!
  •     The post-endurance-event athlete is prone to fatigue and chronic dehydration, as well as injury and illness. "The body is weak, and the mind is undisciplined because the immediate goal has been achieved. A post-marathon runner is very vulnerable". Three body systems are now in need of recovery: muscular, chemical and psychological.
  •     Keep moving around as much as possible in the days after the marathon. Alternate hot and cold soaks, and get a massage.
  • Anti-inflammatory such as Aleve or Advil (as long as you are not allergic or have ulcers) will help ease your pain in the first post-marathon week. Getting a massage helps flush out all the waste products in your muscles. Use a foam roller and a "stick" or pastry roller.

Resuming Training

  •     Unless you are hell-bent on doing back-to-back Marathons, Your first long run should slot in about 4 weeks after the marathon.
  •     Start getting back into training with longer runs and speedwork about 3-4 weeks afterwards. Don't be surprised if you come down with a cold or some other virus in the next week or so. It often happens after a marathon. Pamper yourself until it clears.
  •     Savor the soreness afterward. Each creaky step will be a reminder of all your hard work. Once you're ready to feel like a normal person again, cycling/spinning is a great recovery activity. Also, a massage will never feel so good or so well-deserved.
  •     If your symptoms don't improve in a week, seek medical advice. I recommend taking it easy for a month after the marathon.
  •     There's no rush. You have a lot of repair work to do. Let the pain settle. Have a walk and splash about in the swimming pool. One week after the marathon is quite soon enough for your first run of any significant length, and if you don't run for two weeks that's fine.
  •     Novice and veteran endurance event racers, from road runners to rowers to multisporters, have one thing in common: all are subject to "the blues" in the weeks following the big day. It's important to be prepared for this possibility and to take measures, if necessary, to get back on track.
  •     It may be, for reasons of weather or bad form or bad luck on the day, the event did not go as well as you had hoped, and you are now spending a lot of mental energy cursing circumstances or trying to figure out what happened. Rest up, recover & lick your wounds. There will be another day!

Death of Tadhg Twomey - Rising Sun AC Knocknacurra AC and late of Bandon AC

Tadhg Twomey R.I.P. - Condolences

The Officers and Officials of Cork Athletics County Board extend their condolences and deepest sympathy to the family of our esteemed colleague Tadhg Twomey.

Tadhg Twomey was a member of Rising Sun AC, Knocknacurra AC, and later Bandon AC. He won a total of 34 Irish titles, second only to Ned Tobin (Galway) who won a total of 36 titles. Tadgh won 18 Over-the-Bar titles, and held the Irish record for many years. In addition, he won 16 Weight-for-Distance titles. He won his first Irish Title in 1960, becoming Bandon AC's first Irish Record Holder, and his final Title win came 20 years later, in 1980. He also took Irish Silver and bronze in High, Long and Triple Jumps in his early years. He also won many County, Munster and National medals throughout the 1960s, to the 1980's, in a number of field events, including long Jump, high jump and weight throws.

Tadhg Twomey was presented with the Bandon AC Hall of Fame award, in 2011

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis

Tadhg TWOMEY (KNOCKNACURRA A.C.)

Seldom does one find a heavyweight proficient at more than a couple of events on the athletic circuit, and normally they are to be found in the weights division. Occasionally this point is proved wrong, a telling example being the burly, fifteen stone, 28-year-old farmer, Tadhg Twomey, of Knocknacurra Athletic Club, near Bandon, Co. Cork

This strapping athlete has not alone made the half hundredweight events personal property in recent times, but has achieved over 6' 2" in high jump, 47' in hop, step and jump and is equal to the best in the long jump.

Twice in recent years technical faults have deprived the popular Corkman of improving on Ned Tobin's 15' 5" over bar  record, set in 1943. In the National championships at Gorey in 1964 he lofted the weight to 15' 6" and, at his local Ballinaspittle sports last year, he reached 15' 6¼". Twomey's greatest ambition must now be to break this record.

The Knocknacurra athlete brought his Irish medals tally to ten this year when retaining the 56 lb. double in the All-Ireland senior championships at Banteer.
Let us follow Twomey on a typical season's athletic itinerary, the current one for example. At open sports meetings, asIrish champion, he must throw from scratch in the two 56 lb. events. His high jump mark was one inch but is now at scratch also.
At Ballinhassig on May 22 the Knocknacurra man captured his first championship of 1966 when winning the Munster 56 lb. O/B at 14' 9". And he was second in the high jump. On June 12 at Bweeing came a second in long jump and 56 lb. W/F, and a third in the high jump. That evening over at Carrigaline he was second in the high jump to Irish champion Pat O'Shea (Millstreet).

At Blarney on July 3 two thirds came to Twomey, in the shot and high jump. The week-end of July 16-17 brought further prizes to this versatile athlete. He was first in the 56 lb. O/B and second in the high jump at Banteer on the Saturday and firsts in the high jump and 56 lb. W/F at Skibbereen the following day.

Then came the Irish championship double at Banteer and only last Sunday week Twomey was again in the prizewinner's list when getting second to O'Shea in the high jump at Ballyhooley.

Above are just some of the successes registered by Tadhg Twomey in 1966, but enough to testify to a great consistency over the campaign.

Twomey continues to out-throw and out-jump some of the lesser lights and the big Knocknacurra man may well be doing so for many years to come. He has proved that there is a place for the muscular athlete outside the weight throwing circle.        -JIM FOGARTY

30 Years Ago - Liam O'Brien Wins Cork County Senior Cross-Country Championship – Guest Article by John Walshe

CROSS-COUNTRY VICTORY OF 30 YEARS AGO

Guest Article by John Walshe

This coming Sunday at Carrigadrohid, near Macroom, Tim O’Donoghue will be hoping to retain the Cork County Senior Cross-Country crown he won so convincingly last year, at Carraig na bhFear.

His victory, 12 months ago, was the first by a member of the East Cork club since Donnacha O’Mahony won the last of his six titles, in 2003. Before that, you have to go back another six years to find the previous winner in the maroon colours, that being Garrett Barry in 1997.

It may come as a surprise to many to realise that the club’s most decorated athlete, who reigned supreme during the 1980s and 90s, has just one solitary Cork senior cross-country title to his name, and that came 30 years ago this winter.

They say good things come to those who wait, but for Liam O’Brien that wait lasted the best part of 10 years. Although somewhat underrated on a national scale, amongst his fellow athletes, the Ballinacurra native is regarded as one of the country’s most versatile and successful runners of his era.

Take any distance, from 400m on the track to 15 miles on the road, and O’Brien figures amongst the top finishers. With personal best ranging from a four-minute-mile (4:00.80) to 47:57 for 10 miles, very few could challenge him.

His greatest moment came in 1984, when he reached the semi-final of the 3000m steeplechase at the Los Angeles Olympics. That summer, to qualify, he achieved an Irish record of 8:27.24, at the Crystal Palace meet in London. Thirty-five years later, it’s still the second fastest on the Irish all-time list.

But it wasn’t for lack of effort that he failed to win the coveted Cork crown over the country, as, during the eight years from 1981 to 1988, he finished second on five occasions, and third in the other three.

The man who spoilt the show in seven of those championships was Tony O’Leary of Leevale. The other winner, in 1987, was Richard O’Flynn from Bandon. On that occasion O’Brien did finish ahead of the Leevale man, when taking silver.

Looking back on those years, O’Brien agrees that O’Leary was his main obstacle: “Yes, Tony was the main man; he was a better cross-country than me. Also, at that time of year I would have to work very hard, as my main focus was track and field. The form at cross-country wouldn’t be as good as I’d like.

“There was also one year I remember I was running a cross-country race in the UK, on a Saturday, and came back that night and turned out in the county the following day.”

And so, on to 1989, at Dunmanway, where the championships were decided over five flat laps that made up the 10km. O’Brien’s clubmate Tom Owens led a 10-man bunch through the first lap, and then another East Cork man, Bryan Meade, took over on the second circuit.

Leonard O’Regan of Leevale, back from scholarship at Louisiana State University, was second at this stage with O’Brien on his shoulder. Going into the penultimate lap, it was down to a two-man race. Although O’Regan tried on several occasions to get away, it came down to a sprint finish where there was only going to be one outcome – victory for the East Cork athlete by a margin of four seconds.

“Yes, it was a hard-earned victory, at that time of year I would always have to work hard,” O’Brien recalls. For good measure, East Cork easily won the six to score team award, with O’Brien backed up by John Kearney (third), Bryan Meade (fifth), Donnacha O’Mahony (seventh), Tom Owens (ninth) and Jerry Wallace (13th).

“Winning the county team title is one of the rare occasions, where in an individual sport the team title supersedes the individual title,” adds O’Brien, giving an indication of maybe where his priorities lay.

Although he would go on to add three more national steeplechase victories to the eight he had already won - plus a national masters cross-country title – the was one other local victory that is etched in the mind.

On a chilly July evening in 1991, the Cork City Sports took place at the Mardyke. There wasn’t much to cheer about for the home fans until the final event of the night, the 5000m. This featured a number of top British runners along with most of the best of the Irish, including 36-year-old O’Brien.

As the large field was whittled down, just three contenders remained – O’Brien, the US based Noel Berkeley, and Noel Richardson from Limerick. As the pace increased and the lap times came down from 67 to 64, O’Brien bided his time, until the finishing straight, before outsprinting Berkeley to cross the line to a tumultuous reception.

The time of 13:52.72 may have been over 16 seconds outside his best of 13:36.19, achieved at the same venue four years before, but then, for Liam O’Brien, times never took on any real significance.

On almost every occasion, it was all about the win.

Four days out, and while you wouldn't put your money on it, the weather forecast for Sunday is looking pretty good: There's a pretty static High coming in. That means Clear Skies and Cold Nights, along with very little Wind. So, for Sunday, it will start off cold, probably with a frosty morning. Temperatures will range from 4C to 10C, and winds of 2m to 3m/sec, from the North or Northwest are likely.

Before the start, you're best advised to wear gloves, and something on your head, along with some gear that you might throw away, to keep you warm. (Any gear thrown away is collected and donated to charity, or recycled)

Pacing Groups

dublin marathon pacers copy

Pacers will be running at 10 minute interval target paces, between 3 hours and 5 hours, running the distance at a steady pace, to get their particular pace group over the line at their indicidual target time.  Normally each pace has two, or more, pacers. Towards the later stages, in particular, they tend to split, with one of the pacers leading the group, while the other drops towards the back of the group, offering encouragement to those who may be going through a bad patch.

Updated Entries Listing for Athletics Ireland National Marathon Championship 2019

Dublin

Sunday October 27th 2019

Updated 16:30pm, 18th October 2019

 Athletics Ireland Registration Banner

The Athletics Ireland National Marathon Championship will be incorporated in the KBC Airtricity Dublin Marathon, on Sunday October 27th 2019

Championship Times

Last year there was a lot of grief with Championship Times, when all championship times, both individual and team, were based on the Gun Time for Wave 1. As a result, Championship entrants were "penalised" by up to 45 minutes (Wave 4), before they even ran a single step.

Thankfully there has been a compromise that appears to address the issue: "All National Marathon Championship results will be based on gun times. There will be 4 waves, with each having a separate gun time."

This means that you will NOT be time penalised is you start in Waves 2, 3 or 4. So, someone running a gun time of, say 3:45:00, in Wave 2, will be credited with 3:45:00. Last year, the additional 15 minutes (9:15am start) would have been added, giving an official gun time of 4:00:00.  Relief all-round!

Listings

Athletics Ireland has released the FINAL listing of entries in the National Marathon Championship.  The listings were supplied by Dublin BHAA, organisers of the Dublin City Marathon, and were drawn from the online entries inputted by competitors.

As with every other year, the entry list is strewn with errors: Many entrants omitted to select their club from the dropdown list, others selected the wrong club from the listing. Consequently it is vital that all athletes, and clubs, check the listings, to ensure that all their members are included, and, where there are errors or omissions, notify This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. BY 1PM on Wednesday NEXT October 23rd.

All entries into the National Marathon must be submitted by 1pm on Wednesday, October 23rd. No changes can be made after this time.

If you have a query about the published list, contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. DIRECTLY

NB: Every year this listing causes much anguish and consternation, with clubs and individuals omitted.  When entering the Marathon, athletes can select their Athletics Ireland club from the drop-down listing. ...and that is where the problems start!

The club listing is initially formed from a list of 'current' clubs, supplied by Athletics Ireland. Unfortunately the list supplied to the marathon organisers is sometimes not up-to-date, so newer clubs, or clubs whose names have changed are often missing.

Cork Club Representation

There are 392 Cork Athletes, from 37 Cork Clubs, so just approx. 2/3rds registered Cork clubs are represented. Eagle AC (40), Watergrasshill AC (45), Mallow AC (29), and St. Finbarrs AC and Mallow AC both with (29) have the largest Cork representations, and, with a strong Cork pedigree in the Marathon Championship, no doubt, all five clubs will be chasing various Team and Individual honours.

Launch of Munster Regional Athletics Academy 2019

Munster Regional Athletics Academy 2019-2020

munster development squad

Munster Regional Development Officers and Co-Ordinators are delighted to announce the launch of their rebranded Regional Athletics Academies, formerly known as the Munster Development & Performance Squads

The Regional Athletics Academies have been designed to promote a fun and friendly atmosphere among athletes, whereby the athletes can mix socially, learn athletics, and try new events. Athletics is largely an individual sport, so these events are important outside the competition environment.

Each region will have a 'Development Squad' and 'Regional Athletics Academy', and will run for 2 hours each, with the Development Squad session being the first each day.

There will be regional overnight camps organised for those who have been attending the individual academy days. This is open only to athletes who are in the Regional Athletics Academy. The Development Squad athletes are invited to come along to squad days. Closer to the time, Regional Co-ordinators will inform athletes regarding dates and venues.

Club coaches are encouraged to attend and observe. The squad coaches will be available to interact and answer queries from club coaches who may wish to attend.

Cost of the squad is €25 per athlete, to be paid online only. In exceptional circumstances, where athletes have missed the online registration deadline, they can pay €25 in cash, or €7 per session.

Goals of the Regional Athletics Academies

•    Supplement training that athletes already receive in their clubs. The Regional Academies work alongside the workshops of the National Event Coordinators.
•    Focus on the needs of athletes/coaches, with emphasis on executing the fundamentals to the highest level.
•    Help to maximise the potential of each athlete, with the aim of seeking continuous improvement.
•    The Squads will focus mainly on the technical aspects of each event.
•    Assist club coaches.

Athletes have been selected from the previous season's results (2019 age groups), from U16 - U19 age groups (top 4 in each event). All event groups are covered. All competitions including Cross-Country, Indoors, Combined Events, Schools and Track and field will be taken into consideration.
