This article by John Walshe appeared in The Echo on Wednesday August 14th 2019
A month after the Cork City Sports of 1972, there was another treat for local fans, when the BLE National Track & Field championships took place at Banteer. That year was also a significant one, as the Olympic Games were scheduled for Munich in September.
An eight-minute video that recently surfaced on YouTube, narrated by the late Brendan O’Reilly for RTE, brought back many fond memories of that weekend of top-class fare.
The opening session on the Saturday evening of July 22 was noted for two things – the thunderstorm that waterlogged the grass track on a cinder surface half an hour before the meeting commenced, and an enthralling 10,000m, which featured three athletes who had already booked their tickets to Munich, in three different events.
Four weeks previously, in his first attempt at the distance, Donie Walsh of Leevale had qualified in the marathon, when winning the BLE title in 2:15:21. A week before Banteer, the AAA championships had taken place at Crystal Palace. There, the British hero of the day, Dave Bedford, had won the 5000m, on the Friday night, in a European record of 13:17.2, followed 19 hours later with victory over 10,000m in 27:52.8.
Overshadowed by such amazing exploits in both events, were Irish records of 13:43.0 by John Hartnett (Grange), and 28:48.0 by Neil Cusack (Limerick). Seven days later, both athletes, along with Walsh, lined up for what would be an epic encounter over 25 laps.
All three were on American scholarships (Hartnett and Walsh at Villanova, Cusack at East Tennessee), and what is remarkable nowadays, along with a heavy racing programme, was their young age – Hartnett had just turned 22, Cusack was only 20 while Walsh was the eldest at 24.
Cusack would go on to win the Boston Marathon two years later, and had already run 2:16:18 for the distance the previous December, a world age-19 best. It was he who dictated the pace at Banteer, over the opening laps, and the race soon developed into the expected battle between the three main protagonists.
With around six laps remaining, Cusack and Walsh poured on the pressure, in an effort to blunt Hartnett’s known finishing speed. However, with just over a mile to go, the Grange athlete struck for home with two remarkable laps of 62 and 66 seconds, effectively ending the contest. He crossed the line in 29:02.4, with Walsh trailing home in 29:15.2 while Cusack had to settle for third in 29:23.0
Some of the other highlights of that weekend included doubles by three other Munich-bound athletes. Fanahan McSweeney, another Grange man, won the 200m in 21.5 sec and 400m in 47.8 sec. Ovens all-rounder Margaret Murphy won the 110m hurdles for the third year in succession in a time of 15.9 sec, also adding the long jump, with a leap of 5.51m, plus a third in the 100m. Clonliffe Harrier Claire Walsh was victorious over the 200m (24.5 sec) and 400m (55.4 sec)
Len Braham (Ballymore-Cobh) took gold in the discus with a throw of 46.74m, and finished second to Tadgh Twomey, from Bandon, in both the 56 lbs for distance, and over the bar. Pat Moore of Leevale, who is still competing today, won the first of his six national titles in his speciality javelin event, with a best of 55.90m, while Liam Gleeson (Nenagh) set a new Irish record of 4.22m, in the pole vault.
Midleton-born Mike Keogh, 21, a student at Manhattan University who had already achieved the 5000m standard, won that event in 14:23.4 but was defeated in an exciting 1500m contest where victory went to Brother John Dooley (DCH) in 3:51.5.
The women’s 1500m saw Mary Tracey from the Guinness club home first in 4:20.5 while Joan Fleming of St Finbarr’s gave the home crowd some cheer when finishing an easy winner of the 800m in 2:11.8.
Frank Walley, now President of the Cork City Sports, gained his first national title when winning the 100m in 11.0 sec,and also finished second in the 200m behind Fanahan McSweeney. Vinny Becker of Crusaders, second in the 100m, withdrew from the longer sprint when controversially claiming there was a hole in the lane he had been given.
This was denied by Banteer Sports Committee Secretary, Jerry Sheehan, who explained that when the track was being rolled a small quantity of diesel spilled from the machine causing the grass to burn and turning it into a different colour from the immediate surrounding area.
Maybe there’s something to be said for the all-weather tracks after all.

"Another successful Track and Field season has been concluded, and our beautiful summer has come to a close. Its back to school, and back to training"
Cork County Athletics County Board’s highly popular CYDI/Winter Coaching Series will resume this September, at CIT Track.
Last year saw the expansion and development of the programme, with new initiatives introduced. Two coaching sessions took place each day, with selected CYDI athletes training from 1pm to 2:30pm, followed by an open session, from 2:30pm to 4pm.
The focus for the CYDI group is to focus on the challenge of achieving qualifying standards for European Youth Olympics.

The coaches and administrators congratulate Aoife O’Sullivan (Liscarroll AC) on achieving the standard, and selection for the Irish team for Baku, Azerbaijan, where Aoife reached the High Jump Final.
Adam Turner, Belgooly AC
We also congratulate Adam Turner (Belgooly AC), who secured his first Irish International selection, on the Irish Schools team at the SIAB Nations Cup International.
Both were regular attendees at last year’s CYDI sessions.
Share Howard, Bandon AC, Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month July 2017
Not forgetting one of our coaches, Shane Howard (Bandon AC), who got his first International call-up, representing Ireland at the recent European Team League First Division T&F. Shane is a fabulous example that self-belief and dedication to training lead to achieving goals.
After review of last year’s programme by the coaches, and feedback from athletes and parents, the following programme has been put in place for this year’s CYDI/Winter Coaching Series at CIT Track.

2) To provide a pathway to the National High Performance Junior squad
Provide information on qualification standards and selection policy, and how they are determined - Jacqui Freyne Athletics Ireland High Performance
To organise workshops around the area of physical development and the young athlete, and its impact on performance. - Mary Gleasure BSc SMISCP (Specialist in Sports Medicine, DIP Sports Psychology, DIP Nutrition).
To organise workshops on training pian towards achievement of standards, and to understand competition peaking. - Athletics Ireland High Performance
To hold regular coaching sessions in the events with selected athletes
Cork athletics provides competition for juvenile athletes in events in the year before they compete at Munster/National level.
The primary aim of the Cork Athletics run CYDI & Winter Coaching Series is to raise the technical proficiency in selected track and field events, and to assist in the coaching of athletes for competition.
This series is in its 5th year, and Saturday sees the resumption of the Series, with the 2019 Autumn/Winter sessions.
The first session, from 1pm to 2:30pm, is for athletes who have already attained an advanced standard in the event.
The sole exception is the Hurdles, where only one session will be held, from 1pm to 2:30pm, starting with athletes born in the year 2009. Hurdles is a unique event. As athletes move up an age-group each year, it becomes a new event for them, every year up to Senior level, as the Hurdle height and spacing changes.
A beginners/improvers session will be held from 2:30 to 4pm. The following age limits apply:
Event | Starting Age |
---|---|
Sprints/Long Jump | Born in 2012 |
Shot Put/High Jump | Born in 2010 |
Hurdles | Born in 2009 |
Discus/Hammer | Born in 2008 |
Javelin | Born in 2009 |
NB: THERE WILL BE NO TURBO JAVELIN TRAINING

Sunday September 1st 2019
Michelle Finn, Leevale AC, ran 6:16.67, for 7th place, breaking Sara Treacy's 6:27.38 record. Gesa Krause, produced a dynamic final lap, to win in 5:52.8, breaking the World Record of 6:02.16. Behind her, in the early stages, there was mayhem, when Chepkurui, in 3rd place, had a spectacular mishap, (approx. 1:48 into the video) missing her footing and running smack into a hurdle barrier. After, literally, climbing over the hurdle and then falling to the track, clutching her abdomen. Michelle then had to do 'some fancy footwork', to avoid the stricken Chepkurui.

Sinead went in both the F40 100m and 200m, winning the 100m in a PB of 13.18 sec and placing second in the F40 200m, in another PB of 27.39 sec

Based on Review by Joe Hartnett, Meet Director, Cork City Sports
Results of 68th Cork City Sports
The BAM Cork City Sports 2019 was a huge success, with some thoroughly entertaining competition, at the highest level of world athletics. Despite less than favourable weather conditions, athletes put on a display of skill, speed and endurance to match some of the best athletics meetings in Europe. Some of the times were affected by swirling wind conditions and cold temperatures, but this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the capacity crowds that turned out in support of this historic Cork event.
The 68th running of this event is rated as probably the best ever held at the CIT Stadium by athletics aficionado's. Every event was packed with world class talent.
The stand out performance of the night came from Luvo Manyonga (RSA) while setting a new stadium record, meeting record, and Irish all-comers record, in the Long Jump, with a jump of 8.20m. Manyonga captured the hearts of the crowd with his personality and amazing athletic ability. The crowd were fully engaged with this event and the loud cheering and clapping for all the participants could be heard for miles, but particularly when Manyonga was on the runway. He really got the capacity crowd involved. He promised an all-comers record, and he delivered in style. Tim Duckworth (GBR) and Jesse Thibodeau (CAN) joined him on the podium, with marks of 7.72m and 7.49m respectively.
The crowd was treated to other excellent performances also. The mens 3000m was a tremendous race, which eventually came down to three outstanding athletes fighting it out for the win. Patrick Tiernan, Antonio Abadia and Luc Bruchet went clear of the pack after the pacemaker dropped out. Tiernan went for home and tried to get clear of the others, but they both hung in behind him in the windy conditions. Then Bruchet fell back leaving the race to the finish between Abadia and Tiernan. Tiernan worked hard to drop Abadia but he hung on and coming off the last bend came from behind, and got his nose in front as both fought each other all the way to the line, with Abadia getting the win in a hugely impressive time of 7:48.26 considering the swirling winds in the Stadium. All three athletes clocked under 7:50.

The womens and mens 800m races were both excellent competitions. In the womens race, Olivia Baker (USA) proved too strong for Cynthia Anais (FRA) and Adelle Treacy (GBR) with all three athletes clocking 2:01 times, which was very fast considering the windy conditions. Nadia Power (IRL) ran a great race, and was rewarded with a new PB of 2:03.19.
In the mens race, the field didn't go with the pacemaker, and it came down to a sprint with 250m to go, with Isaiah Harris (USA) getting the jump on the field' while being chased by Jake Wightman around the bend, and all the way up the finishing straight. Harris stayed strong to the finish line, and Wightman couldn't close the gap. Wightman was caught right on the line by the fast-finishing Spencer Thomas (GBR) who sneaked by on the inside, at the line to take second place. Mark English (IRL), European Indoor Bronze Medalist pulled up with 200m to go, and seems to have an uncertain road to Doha now, in trying to qualify for the World Championships.
Women's 100m & 200m
The womens sprints were dominated by Candace Hill (USA) winning both the 100m and 200m, in 11.37 sec and 23.07 sec respectively. She is a rare talent at only 20 years of age, and an athlete to watch out for in the next few years. Bandon AC's Phil Healy, still on the comeback trail, after a bad injury, ran well, in very strong competition, to take fourth place in both the 100m and 200m, in times of 11.49 sec and 23.40 sec respectively.
The mens 100m was won by Demek Kemp (USA) by just one hundredth of a second, from Jeff Demps (USA) in 10.19 secs. The 200m was taken by Sean McClean (USA) in 20.58 sec. He is a previous Cork City Sports winner, in both the 100m and 200m, back in 2017. Leon Reid (IRL) took third place in 20.89 sec, with and Marcus Lawler (IRL) sixth in 21.04 sec.
The womens high jump was won by Priscilla Frederick (ANT) with a jump of 1.88m, on a difficult night for high jumpers, due to the windy conditions. Pippa Rogan and Sommer Lecky of Ireland both jumped 1.80m to take 4th and 5th places respectively. The mens high jump was won by Chris Moleya (RSA) from Will Grimsey, in second place, with both jumping 2.15m.
Chuk Enekwechi (USA) completed three victories in a row at the BAM Cork City Sports, which is a rare occurrence, to win the shot putt with a throw of 21.19m. Denzel Comenentia (NED) was second, with a throw of 19.81m.
Mens Mile
The mile had some great talent in the race with the potential to produce some great times. However the cold and windy weather conditions, and the fact that the field did not commit to follow the pacemaker closely, excluded fast times and turned the race into a battle over the last 150m. The eventual winner, Robert Domanic (USA), came from way back the field, to clinch victory on the line, from Justyn Knight (CAN) and Sam Prakel (USA) and Ryan Gregson, the pre-race favourite, back in fourth place.
Overall the meeting was an huge success and, with the assistance of all the sponsors, especially BAM Construction, who this year became the title sponsor, gave the Cork public a night to remember. But it was Luvo Manyonga who gave the best moments to the crowd. Talks are already under way to bring him back for the 2020 meeting because "theres no show like a Luvo show" it seems, in international athletics in Cork at the moment.
Luvo Manyonga, Republic of South Africa (RSA), receives the Athlete of the Meet award, the John O. Jagoe Memorial Trophy, in recognition of his Irish All-Comers Long Jump record of 8.20m
