Cork Athletics Cross-Country Calendar - Autumn 2019

Autumn Cross-Country Fixtures Calendar 2019

 Cross Country General Image min

Cork Fixtures will have final confirmation, at it's Monthly County Board Meeting, on Wednesday September 4th. Athletics Ireland & Munster Athletics fixtures will be updated .....whenever (available)

At the top of the list are two fixtures, the Cork Athletics Cross-Country League. This is an innovation, introduced by Cork Athletics, in 2018. They have proved to be a nice less-competitive introduction to the Cross-Country season, for Juveniles and Adults alike.  These events will be held on Saturdays, starting at 1 pm. The first in the series, will be held on Saturday August 31st, starting at 1pm

Munster Regional Endurance Performance Squad 2019/20

Regional Endurance Performance Squad

2019 - 2020

Munster Performance Squad min

The first Munster Performance Squad and Development Squad training day of the 2019/2020 series will take place at Banna Strand, from September 13th to 15th

Munster Endurance Performance Squad

Athletes have been selected for this year’s Regional Endurance Performance Squads based on their results over the past 12 months. Congratulations to those athletes selected. The squads will aim to bring top young athletes from across each province together for opportunities to train collectively. Whilst this undoubtedly has some performance benefits, perhaps more importantly it gives athletes a chance to get to know each other and can only help build a strong vibrant endurance community that athletes will want to be part of for years to come. The first squad activity takes place in September, with a weekend camp.  Athletes who wish to be involved MUST register by August 13th

Camps will include a mix of practical training sessions, theory and input from older international athletes, and will be led by coaches who have at least Level 2 coaching standard. Camps will run from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon. Athletes attending the camps should be healthy and ready to train, and will be expected to adhere to the code of conduct, similar to those in place for Irish athletes at International Championships. The training will be appropriate for the time of year. For enquires please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Athletes included in the squad list should register using this link. Unlike previous years, there is no need to pre-register for the squad. Athletes that have been selected and wish to attend the camp should just follow this link to register directly.

Note. The cost of the camps will be subsidised significantly, but the price of each camps is dependent upon the costs incurred at each venue. Only athletes that are on the lists should register, as other athletes will not be invited to the camps, and their fees will not be reimbursed.

If any athlete is not listed, but feels that they have met the criteria, should ask their coach to contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Munster Performance Squad

Criteria for Selection on Regional Junior Endurance Performance Squads The following criteria run in order from number 1 to number 5. Each region has slightly different criteria due to differences in the depth of athletes competing at a high level and as we only have capacity at camps for certain numbers

1) Have represented Ireland in International competition in 2018/2019 (European XC Championships 2018, Celtic International XC 2019, Schools International XC 2019, Schools International T&F 2019, EYOF 2019, European Junior T&F 2019, Celtic Games T&F2019)

2) Have finished in the top 6 places at an OUTDOOR All Ireland T&F Championships Schools or Clubs in 2019, where there are a minimum of 8 finishers (Excluding Steeplechase with top 3 only from this event)

3) Have finished in the top 25 places at an All-Ireland Schools XC 2019 (Inter & Senior only) or All Ireland Clubs XC Championship 2018

4) Have finished top in the top 5 places in an INDOOR All Ireland T&F Championships 2019

The Course FAQ

The 2019 Course

Major changes are planned for this year's race.  The changes have been introduced to make the event a more memorable and pleasurable experienced for all participants, walkers and runners alike.

The biggest change is that course will be a 6km race (or 3.73 Miles) event. This means that all participants should be able to assemble and start on Centre Park Road, eliminating the hectic merge of previous years, at the Mill Road / Centre Park Road, making for a much smoother start for all.

Time Zones

Another change new to the race is the introduction of Time Zones. These will be self-selected zones, starting at Sub-24 Minutes, starting with 2 to 3 Minute (exact ranges yet to be decided) zones, with higher ranges as times increase.

So....How will this work? Will I be told which Time Zone I must Go To?

The zones are entirely voluntary - YOU choose the time zone most appriate for your own expected finish time.  The zones will be clearly marked on both sides of the road, between the start line and the the junction of Centre Park Road and Victoria Road.

If you are WALKING the course, we ask you to please not start at the front, on Health & Safety grounds. There will be several thousand runners and joggers taking part, and these will be moving off much faster than walkers. If walkers are among the runners, there is an increased risk of falling, which, at the very least, will spoil your day...so please, if walking, stay back behind the time zones....It will make for a great experience for all participants - Walker and Runner alike!

Walkers

I've always walked the course, but I've always started at the front. Can I do the same this year?
The time zones are completely voluntary, however we urge to please not start at the front, but further back, in a zone appropriate to your own estimated finish time. If you do start at the front, you will be passed, immediately after the start, by thousands of runners, many going much faster than you, possibly leading to a less than pleasant experience.  The principle behind the time zones is that all participants will start smoothly, getting right into their own pace from the outset, leading to a far more enjoyable and safe experience.  This will only work properly if all participants start in a realistic time zone for their pace and finish time.

c) So that you can be identified in photos and videos.
FAQ list

7. I haven't entered and don't have a number
If you don't have a number, you will NOT be admitted to the start area.  If you join in somewhere along the course, you will NOT be covered by the race insurance and will be taking PERSONAL LIABILITY for any mishap you may cause.  After you finish you will NOT receive a finisher's medal or goodie bag.
If you are involved in a medical emergency, we will not know who you are and will not have your details.
FAQ list

8. I haven't entered, I want all my money to go to charity
This event costs a lot of money to organise, however the event organisers, Cork Athletics County Board, maintain the entry charge at a low rate, significantly below that of most other similar events.  In any case, Cork Athletics is a Designated Sports Body - Registered GS Number 3014 - Cork County Board (Athletics Association of Ireland) - under Section 235 Taxes Consolidation Act, 1997

There are many "hidden" costs that you  may not have considered; Insurance entrants in this event are covered by insurance - anyone who has not entered will not be covered.  Portaloos, barriers, including transport for these, security personnel, medical services, race numbers, pins (yes - you may only use 4, but some 50,000 pin are required @ approx. €15 per 1,000), phone & postage, race flyers, information leaflets (distributed to houses and businesses along the course), signage, public address, race radios and many, many more costs.

No Athletics Ireland official or steward receives any money from this event - all time and services are provided free of charge.  The big winners in this event are the various charities chosen by the charities themselves - approx. €1.5 million will be raised for charity from this year's Evening Echo Mini-Marathon - all of which will be given directly to the charities by the participants. So, if people didn't pay their entry fee, it would not be possible to cover the costs of organising and running this event and the big losers would be the charities.
FAQ list

9. Where do I go on the day?
Entrance to the start holding area is via Mill Road and/or Centre Park Road, off Victoria Road.  Other roads in the area will be closed off and barriered, with security personnel present.  There will be no access from the quay areas.

FAQ list

10.  I intend running, is there a separate area for runners?
There is no separate start area for runners. However there are time zones and all runners and walkers are expected to line up in zones appropriate to their level of fitness, pace and expected finish time
FAQ list

11. I intend walking, but I want to get away early. Can I start at the front?
You will not be prevented from starting at the front, but, if you're walking, please do NOT line up towards the front, otherwise there may be jostling and pushing.  You will have a far more pleasant experience if you line up in the zone nearest to your estimated pace/finish time. This will allow everyone to move off quickly, without being held up by slower people in front of them, making for a frustrationg time all round. We want everyone to enjoy their experience.
FAQ list

12. What is the Route?
The route can be seen here, on MapMyRun. the start line is on Centre Park Road.  The race continues east, along Centre Park Road, as far as the Marina, where it turns right and heads east towards Blackrock village. Turning right in Blackrock, at approx. half-way, the route heads back, along Blackrock Road, towards the city, and the finish area.  In Ballintemple, the course turns right into Maryville, passing the 3 mile mark, before turning left onto Monaghan Road and directly on to the finish line.  The course is essentially flat, with only one real, relatively short, drag/hill, coming out of Blackrock village.

When you have finished your water bottle, please dispose of it in one off the bins provided, in a public litter bin, or take it home with you.  We want to recycle as much material as possible. To help us, please empty your drink bottle and dispose of it in one of the recycle bins

Please respect the environment and the goodwill of those living along the route and in the start and finish areas.

Why not leave the headphones at home, and enjoy the special buzz and atmosphere of this unique event!
FAQ list

Cork Athletics Registration Figures - July 31st 2019

Cork Athletics Registration Figures - July 31st 2019

cork athletics registration figures june 30th 2019

July end-of-month registrations for Cork Athletics stand at 7,349. All of Cork Athletics 56 registered clubs now have members registered.

The July figures are a mere 6 registrations up on the July 2018 corresponding figure of 7,343, but are slightly behind the July 2017 figure of 7,424. The corresponding 2016 figure was 6,851, while the July 2015 figure was 6,160. August end-of-month figures are unlikely to change much, however September registrations should see the usual annual surge ahead of the Cross-Country season.

Just two clubs clubs now have less than the required minimum of ten (10) registered members to constitute a valid registered club. While this may not appear to be a major issue for them - Club Members may still compete in championships - it does constitute some difficulties, e.g. they may not vote on a County Board matter and, perhaps of more significance to some clubs, they may not apply for Race permits as a registered club (at least until they have at least 10 registered members)

As always, clubs are reminded that new members may 'try out' the club for a few weeks, after which they MUST be registered, or they will NOT be covered by Athletics Ireland insurance

Feb 1: Any athlete, coach, official, or any member acting in any capacity, who remains unregistered is NOT covered by Athletics Irelands insurance, for ANY purpose whatsoever, including training and/or competition.

The Registration facility is open

Senior Registrations

Senior athletes are, or should include, the 'Elite' members - this is the age group from which our Provincial, National and International athletes will emerge.  The numbers in this age group, from those born before 2000, and aged under 35, continues to be disappointing low, particularly in the early 20's ages.  While athletics is not the only sport experiencing this issue, clearly Cork Athletics and Athletics Ireland urgently needs to formulate a strategy to attract and retain athletes in this age range

Athlete Transfer Deadline - August 24th 2019

Deadline - August 24th 2019

Transfer Image

Cork Athletics Facebook page

Athletes wishing to transfer clubs are reminded that the deadline for the return of fully completed transfer forms is Saturday August 24th.  Forms received after that date will NOT be accepted.

Transfer forms may be downloaded from the Athletics Ireland website.

The Procedure on the form MUST be followed.

Completed forms should be give/posted to Cork AAI County Board Registrar, John Copithorne, Belgooley, Co. Cork.

  • Do NOT call to John Copithorne's house or workplace
  • Do NOT send your form by Registered Post, Courier or other form of delivery, except the regular Post
  • Do NOT send your completed form to Athletics Ireland HQ (Dublin), as this will severely affect delivery time, likely missing the deadline.

Closing date is Sunday March 24th, however, as there is no postal delivery on Saturday 24th August, the effective closing date is Friday August 23rd

Completed Transfer Forms may be submitted at any stage, but will not be reviewed by Cork Athletics County Board until after March 24th. However early submission allows time for the return and resubmission of forms that are incomplete or contain an error of some form or other

The Transfer Form MUST be signed in the following order

By the:

•   Member (in the case of a minor by the parent or guardian)

•   New Club

•   Outgoing Club

•   County Board (outgoing club)

•   County Boards (for out of county club transfer only)

•   County Boards (for inter-county transfer only)

Incomplete, improperly or incorrectly completed forms will be rejected.

Notes:

  • Athletes must be in good stead with the outgoing club, i.e. they must not owe any membership  fee, or other arrears, and all club property in their possession must have been returned
  • Athletes whose membership of the outgoing club has lapsed by more than three years do NOT require a transfer, i.e. they are free to change clubs without going through the formal transfer process - they can be simply registered by the incoming club.  Note: Effectively this means that anyone transferring, who has been registered in ANY of the years 2016, 2017, 2018 or 2019, will need to fill out a Transfer Form

Next Transfer Window, following March 24th 2019, will close on August 24th 2019
