National Marathon Entry Controversy 2019

AAI National Marathon Championship 2020 - Radical Rethink Needed!

 ENTER KBC Dublin Marathon 2020

Yesterday, just 48 hours after the 2019 marathon, the organisers of the KBC Dublin City Marathon announced entry details for the 2020 event.  The entry process opens on Friday next, November 1st. Since the announcvement, controversy has been rife across the media, both in print and online, and on the airwaves.

Controversy

The reason for the debate, angst and outrage is the new lotto entry procedure for 2020, replacing the First-Come - First Served process which has been in place for 40 years. Indeed, it is only in the past few years that an entry limit has been imposed. Even then it took 40 days for the 2019 event to sell out.  On this basis, while there were lots of complaints even then, it when pretty well, so it is difficult to understand why the need to change the system is seen as necessary.

See Cork Athletics post

KBC Dublin Marathon race organisers have announced that registration for the 2020 Dublin Marathon will be by a lottery, instead of the first-come, first-served online process, which, in recent years, gave rise to a frantic 'feeding frenzy', with places being 'gobbled up' in just a few days.

National Championships 2019

Entry for this years AAI National Marathon Championship was the same as for all other entrants - You entered along with everyone else, within the first 40 days, unless you managed to enter later, in the 'Feeding Frenzy' that surrounded the second round of entry offers that came when the limit was entended from 20,000 to 22,500. In other words, you had to enter the AAI National Marathon Championship almost 11 months before the event. This is something that has not been received well in the Athletics Ireland club sphere.

National Marathon Championship 2020

There is a separate entry system for the 2020 AAI National Marathon Championship, based on Good For Age. The AAI National Marathon Championship will open on April 1st, and the significance of the date has not been lost by many!

In summary, There were 17,933 finishers in 2019 - 4,567 entrants either failed to start, or failed to finish.  Of these 17,933, only 1886 (10.5%) would qualify under AAI Good For Age criteria. However, only 877 AAI members meet the standard! There were a total of 3,849 entrants in the AAI National Marathon Championships. Therefore only 22.79% of AAI members would qualify for 2020

It is a totally ridiculous, and intolerable, and unacceptable situation that less than 25% of Athletics Ireland entrants in this years Championships would be eligible for the 2020 Championship. As a Championship event, this system is NOT fit for purpose, and MUST be changed.

Time to Move the Championship to another event?

There are a number of other AIMS/IAAF Marathons, run on closed roads, around the country, that could, and I'm pretty sure, would be delighted to do so, host the Championships, without any of these extreme standards

Atheltics Ireland Report - Feidhlim Kelly

Stephen Scullion (Clonliffe Harriers) starred at the KBC Dublin marathon with a second-place finish overall in 2:12:01 to win the national title in perfect conditions today (October 27).

stephen scullion national marathon chp 2019

Scullion, who has trained at altitude for the last three years fulltime in Flagstaff, Arizona, described it as the ‘best day of my life’ bettering his old pb of 2:14:34 which he set in Houston last January.

It was a day of personal bests in ideal marathon conditions with Mick Clohisey (Raheny Shamrock) second in a new best of 2:13:19 and Hugh Armstrong (Ballina) third on his debut in 2:14:22 – a new Mayo record.

Aoife Cooke (Eagle AC) ran an impressive pb of 2:32:34 (2:46:37 was her previous best in Amsterdam in 2017) to win the women’s national title. She put the result down to ‘a lot of miles, a lot of hard training.’

Cooke 5th on Irish Women's All-Time Standings

Aoife's time elevates her to 5th in the Irish All-time list, led by Cathriona McKiernan (2:22:23), with Fionnuala McCormack's recent Chicago time of 2:26:47 bring her to 2nd place. Carey May's 1985 time of 2:28:07 puts her in third place, with Sonia O'Sullivan (Ballymore-Cobh AC) fourth in 2:27:01

Ann-Marie McGlynn (Letterkenny) had to settle for second in a new pb of 2:32:54 with Gladys Ganiel (North Belfast Harriers) third in 2:36:42.

Sonia O’Sullivan to be Honoured with Hall of Fame Award

Sonia O’Sullivan to Enter Hall of Fame at Irish Life Health Athletics Awards 2019

Crowne Plaza Hotel, Blanchardstown, Dublin

12 Noon, Thursday November 28th 2019

sonia o sullivan hall of fame 2019

Sonia O’Sullivan, arguably Ireland’s greatest ever athlete, will both celebrate her 50th birthday and be honoured with the Hall of Fame award' at this year’s Irish Life Health National Athletics Awards, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Blanchardstown, Dublin, on Thursday November 28th

Sonia, who turns 50 on the day, already has so many accolades that it’s easy to forget, with each passing year, how good she really was. She sprang to prominence as a 17-year-old in Killenaule, when she won the BLE Women's National Senior Cross-Country title. Asked that day what her ambitions in the sport were, she answered shyly: “to make the Olympics.”

She more than achieved that, in hindsight, rather modest ambition, running in four Olympic Games, and winning a famous Silver Medal, in the 5,000m, in Sydney, in 2000. Among her achievements are three World Championship titles; in the 5,000m, on the track in Gothenburg, in 1995, double World Cross-Country Gold, in Marrakech, Morrocco, in 1998, and three European Gold Medals on the track. Her star was truly global, having also won the IAAF World Athlete of the Year, and the Golden League, now known as the Diamond League.

The nominations have also been announced for the Irish Life Health Awards. The Awards ceremony is a celebration of the many successes of Irish athletes during 2019 year, and also recognises the exceptional volunteer base, who are the bedrock of the sport.

Two Cork Athletes: Darragh McElhinney (Bantry AC & UCD) and Alex Wright (Leevale AC) are among those nominated in the respective sub-categories.

The overall Athlete of Year will be selected from the Nominated Athletes who are, in turn, awarded the accolade of Athlete of the year in the  Under-20, Under-23, Endurance, and Track and Field categories.

The youth continue to inspire and grab the attention of the media and the nation:

Under-20 Category

Kate O’Connor (St Gerard’s Dundalk), Sarah Healy (Blackrock) and Darragh McElhinney (UCD/Bantry) all won medals in their respective events, at the European Under-20 Championships, in Boras, Sweden. O’Connor and Healy both won silver in the heptathlon and 1500m respectively, while McElhinney won bronze in the 5,000m.

Under-23 Category

The European Under-23 Athletics Championships brought home two more medals for Ireland, with Eilish Flanagan (Carmen Runners, Omagh) winning Silver in the 3,000m steeplechase, and Nadia Power (Dublin City Harriers) winning Bronze in the 800m.

Athletics continues to highlight its gender balance naturally on the competitive stage with the women holding equal footing with their male counterparts.

Track & Field Category

Ciara Mageean (City of Lisburn) had one of her finest seasons to date, with a 10th place finish in a red hot 1500m final, at the World Athletics Championships, in Doha, and a Bronze medal at the European Indoor Championships, in Glasgow, in March.

Thomas Barr (Ferrybank) and Mark English (UCD) are also in the running for track athlete of the year – Barr was 11th overall, in the 400m hurdles standings at the World Championships, while English won Bronze, over 800m, at the European Indoor Championships.

Endurance Athlete Category

On the endurance end Brendan Boyce (Finn Valley) put in an inspirational performance to finish 6th in the men’s 50km race walk, at the World Championships, in Doha, in the searing heat along the Corniche. Fionnuala McCormack (Kilcoole) finished 18th in the World Cross-Country Championships, and also showed some of her true potential over the marathon distance, finishing fifth in Chicago, in 2:26:47. Both are in the category for Endurance Athlete of the Year.

Other awards that will be presented on the day include, Club of the Year, Services to Coaching, Lifetime Services to Athletics, Official of the Year, and many more.

Athletics Ireland CEO Hamish Adams said: “The National Athletics Awards provide the association with an opportunity to acknowledge the clubs and the volunteers who play a vital role in to the development of athletes and the sport in Ireland. I would like to congratulate all the award nominees, and also offer a big thank you to all our athletics family who contribute so much and so often.”

Liz Rowen, Head of Marketing of Irish Life Health commented: “Irish Life Health is delighted to once again support the National Athletics Awards. The awards give us the opportunity to celebrate sporting excellence in Athletics, as well as recognise volunteers who work tirelessly to give both children and adults the chance to take part in athletics and be active.”

Sophomore phenom Stephanie Cotter won the race outright, finishing with a time of 19:40.3. Her winning performance Saturday along with her already stellar reputation Nationally, awarded Cotter the RMAC Runner of the Year. She was then followed by teammates Eilish Flanagan (19:54.0) and Roisin Flanagan (20:09.0), to complete the podium sweep for the Adams State Women. KBC Dublin Marathon 2020 Entries Open Friday November 1st 2019

Athletics Ireland entries Open April 1st 2020

kbc dublin marathon logo 2020

ENTER KBC Dublin Marathon 2020

KBC Dublin Marathon race organisers have announced that registration for the 2020 Dublin Marathon will be by a lottery, instead of the first-come, first-served online process, which, in recent years, gave rise to a frantic 'feeding frenzy', with places being 'gobbled up' in just a few days.

The decision to move to a lottery entry was made following a huge increase in demand for race entries.

Race Director, Jim Aughney, said: “Many races that have more interested runners than they can accommodate have moved to a lottery registration system in recent years. Demand for the Dublin Marathon has never been greater, and we believe the lottery is the fairest system to offer all runners the same opportunity to participate.”

This change comes after registration demand for the 2019 edition of the marathon could not be met, despite the addition of 2,500 places.

Entry to the 2020 KBC Dublin Marathon lottery will be open from the 1st November to 30th November 2019 ONLY.

Athletics Ireland members will qualify under the Good For Age standards, and can apply on April 1st, but MUST have a valid Athletics Ireland membership number.

There will be a registration fee of €15 per lottery entry, which will be fully refundable, if the applicant is not successful, and fully redeemable against entry fee if the applicant is successful.

Registrants will learn their entry status via SMS and email between 3rd January to 10th January. Successful entrants will have until 31st January 2020 to redeem the offer.

Any initial places not redeemed by 31st January 2020 will be re-allocated by lottery to entrants who were not successful. The applicants will learn their entry status, via SMS and email, between 4th February and 7th February 2020.

These 'second-round' offers must be redeemed by 14th February 2020.

Some Questions

Do runners that have run the Marathon get priority in the lottery system?

The lottery system offers all runners the same opportunity to participate and will not give precedence to those who have already run a Dublin Marathon. The race has moved to a lottery system in the interest of fairness instead of the first-come, first-served online process due to increased demand.

I have run in the Dublin Marathon for the last 'X years', is there any lottery allocation for loyal marathon runners?

The lottery system offers all runners the same opportunity to participate and will not give precedence to those who have already run a Dublin Marathon. The race has moved to a lottery system in the interest of fairness instead of the first-come, first-served online process due to increased demand.

I am training for the marathon with a friend, what if only one of us gets an entry and the other does not?

The race has moved to a lottery system, in the interest of fairness, instead of the first-come, first-served online process, due to increased demand.

Can I give my lottery allocation to another runner?

Refund option opens between June 2nd and June 15th, 2020. A refund of 70% of the entry fee will be returned, once your application has been accepted. The refund will be available on “Manage My Bookings” from your entry confirmation link. This will be the only opportunity to avail of a refund for 2020.

How many Irish runners will be allocated places in the event?

The lottery system employed will ensure the current balance of Irish and overseas runners and runners of all abilities is maintained.

What happens to the 30% of my fee that I do not get back if I seek a refund?

30% of your fee is to cover the administration cost of processing.

Additional NOTES

There will be 22,500 places available for the 2020 KBC Dublin Marathon, with a number of these places allocated to Athletics Ireland membership.

Athletics Ireland members will qualify under the Good For Age standards, and can apply on April 1st but MUST have a valid Athletics Ireland membership number.

Cork Athletics Webmaster's Note: It is not clear from this statement if ALL Athletics Ireland members will qualify as 'Good For Age', or if there will be additional qualification criteria set

Lottery entry to the event will be open to the public, from November 1st to Saturday 30th November, at midnight, via a public webpage, which will be hosted by Eventmaster. This will be the only time period of which an application for entry to the KBC Dublin Marathon can be made.

Applicants will be obligated to enter all registrant information required to satisfy the 2020 event, and will be charged €15 to enter. This fee will be refunded, if the application is unsuccessful, by the end of August 2020, or will be offset against entry fee, if successful.

KBC Dublin Marathon will select successful lottery applications on a random basis, but in a manner that ensures that the current balance of Irish to overseas runners, and runners of all abilities is maintained.

Eventmaster will send an SMS to the successful applicants, along with a direct link to register for the event. The Access link will direct the user to their registration page on the 2020 marathon event website, and the data from the lottery will be pre-populated; Name, email, gender, DOB, mobile will not be editable, ensuring that only the selected applicant can use that lottery link. Fee of €75 to enter (€90, the less €15 already paid) + additional purchases and booking fee (€3), as normal. Successful applicants will have until MIDNIGHT 31st January to use the link. Email reminders will be issued.

Applicants whose applications have been unsuccessful will receive an email confirming this.

Any places not redeemed will be offered, via lottery system, to those originally unsuccessful, from 4th February to 7th February 2020, with offers which must be redeemed by 14th February.

The Refund option will be open from June 2nd to June 15th, 2020. A refund of 70% of the entry fee will be returned, once your application has been accepted. The refund will be available on “Manage My Bookings” from your entry confirmation link. This will be the only opportunity to avail of a refund for 2020.

Any unallocated numbers to be offered to unsuccessful lottery applicants, between July 1st -July 7th, 2020, and offers must be redeemed by 14th July.

A Refund of €15 will be issued to those who have been unsuccessful

Cork Athletics Webmaster's Advice for Marathon Recovery

Recovery after the Marathon
Recovery begins IMMEDIATELY after you cross the line

Important!! First Thing!!

  •     Think on your feet! You will be VERY tired. Heed the advice in this section
  •     Keep moving once you cross the line. The lactic acid debt will hit you pretty quick, and all movement will help clear it

  •     After you finish (and you will!), make sure to eat something. Try to get some carbohydrates into you within 15 minutes of finishing - it'll kick start your body's recovery. Leave it later and your digestive system will start to shut down - safeguard mode. Replace lost fluids and energy as soon as possible. Drink plenty and try to eat foods with plenty of carbohydrates; bananas, pasta, bread, etc.

  •     Keep warm, remember to pack a fleece or jumper, t-shirt, leggings, hat, socks and, maybe, gloves. If the day is wet, a change of shoes will be needed. If all this doen't fit into the 'drop bag', give the non-essentials to someone who will meet you afterwards. You'll feel cold very quickly afterwards, so wrap up well, ideally in layers.
  • Every year, I see people trudging home, sometimes 2 or 3 miles away from the finish, simply dressed in the singlet and shorts they ran the Marathon in, proudly wearing their medal around their neck.  DON'T be the one to forget to pack something to wear AFTER the event. Sure you'll get a Technical Top. You can wear that...but it isn't enough to keep you warm. Bring more...Layers are best!
  •     Have someone meet you at a prearranged spot to give you dry clothes or to take extra layers. The finish area is mayhem! Know exactly where you are meeting friends and family! Have a backup location in case, for whatever reason, the first location is, say, closed to either runners or spectators.
  • Hyponatraemia - Arises from drinking too much water. This is more likely to affect those who are out on the course longer, or who may not have balanced their fluid intake, in the lead-up. Hyponatremia occurs when the concentration of sodium in your blood is abnormally low. Sodium is an electrolyte, and it helps regulate the amount of water that's in and around your cells. In hyponatremia, one or more factors — ranging from an underlying medical condition to drinking too much water — cause the sodium in your body to become diluted. When this happens, your body's water levels rise, and your cells begin to swell. This swelling can cause many health problems, from mild to life-threatening.

  • Symptoms - Hyponatremia signs and symptoms may include:

        Nausea and vomiting
        Headache
        Confusion
Loss of energy, drowsiness and fatigue
        Restlessness and irritability
        Muscle weakness, spasms or cramps
        Seizures
        Coma

    When to see a doctor

Seek emergency care for anyone who develops severe signs and symptoms of hyponatremia, such as nausea and vomiting, confusion, seizures, or lost consciousness

If YOU see someone in distress, please alert the Medics along the course.  At, and after, the finish there will be lots of paramedics about. DON'T assume that someone else has alerted them.

blister stages

  •     It is unwise to pop your blisters until after you shower, to prevent infection. Use a sterilized needle to pop two slits on opposite sides of the blister and leave the roof on. Lubricate the area with antibiotic ointment, and only cover them if you absolutely needed. (Second Skin or Compeed work best.) Leaving the blisters open and soaking in Epsom Salts also dries them out faster. If you have black and blue toenails, drain them as soon as possible, and you may be able to save your toenails and avoid a lot of unnecessary pain.

  •     Alternate hot and cold soaks, and get a massage. Use a foam roller (lightly) and a "stick" or pastry roller.

  •     Congrats on finishing! Rule of thumb for recovery is 1 day for every mile, that doesn't mean don't do anything but don't plan to race or run hard any time soon. Take it easy!
  • Anti-inflammatory such as Aleve or Advil (as long as you are not allergic or have ulcers) will help ease your pain in the first post-marathon week. Getting a massage helps flush out all the waste products in your muscles.
  •     It may be wise not to resume running until all of the soreness is gone from your legs. Use your judgment about when to resume running. Basically, if anything is swollen or bruised, or if you experience sharp pains when you resume running, stop!
  •     Eat a bit more and sleep a bit more. You need the building blocks for muscle repair, and your body does most of its repair work when you're sleeping

The Day After the Marathon

  •     Rather than spin the day after the race, swim or deep water run. You loosen your muscles up a bit without putting any pressure on the joints.
  •     If, like me, you are prone to cold-sores, you will be very prone to them after the marathon. If you swim in the few days afterward, you should apply a lip protector or Vaseline. It helps to lightly smear Vaseline into and around openings of your nostrils. Bet the rest of you are glad you don't get cold-sores - lucky buggers!!
  •     The post-endurance-event athlete is prone to fatigue and chronic dehydration, as well as injury and illness. "The body is weak, and the mind is undisciplined because the immediate goal has been achieved. A post-marathon runner is very vulnerable". Three body systems are now in need of recovery: muscular, chemical and psychological.
  •     Keep moving around as much as possible in the days after the marathon. Alternate hot and cold soaks, and get a massage.
  • Anti-inflammatory such as Aleve or Advil (as long as you are not allergic or have ulcers) will help ease your pain in the first post-marathon week. Getting a massage helps flush out all the waste products in your muscles. Use a foam roller and a "stick" or pastry roller.

Resuming Training

  •     Unless you are hell-bent on doing back-to-back Marathons, Your first long run should slot in about 4 weeks after the marathon.
  •     Start getting back into training with longer runs and speedwork about 3-4 weeks afterwards. Don't be surprised if you come down with a cold or some other virus in the next week or so. It often happens after a marathon. Pamper yourself until it clears.
  •     Savor the soreness afterward. Each creaky step will be a reminder of all your hard work. Once you're ready to feel like a normal person again, cycling/spinning is a great recovery activity. Also, a massage will never feel so good or so well-deserved.
  •     If your symptoms don't improve in a week, seek medical advice. I recommend taking it easy for a month after the marathon.
  •     There's no rush. You have a lot of repair work to do. Let the pain settle. Have a walk and splash about in the swimming pool. One week after the marathon is quite soon enough for your first run of any significant length, and if you don't run for two weeks that's fine.
  •     Novice and veteran endurance event racers, from road runners to rowers to multisporters, have one thing in common: all are subject to "the blues" in the weeks following the big day. It's important to be prepared for this possibility and to take measures, if necessary, to get back on track.
  •     It may be, for reasons of weather or bad form or bad luck on the day, the event did not go as well as you had hoped, and you are now spending a lot of mental energy cursing circumstances or trying to figure out what happened. Rest up, recover & lick your wounds. There will be another day!
