Week to Sunday February 6th 2022

Lots of Irish in action abroad over the past week - Here are some of the highlights involving Cork athletes

Louise Shanahan, Leevale AC and Ireland

Womens 800m - DNA Indoor, Glasgow

Louise Shanahan, represented Ireland in the Women's 800m, at the six nation DNA Indoor, in Glasgow, on Saturday. Louise settled quickly into second place in a tactical race, behind Spaniard Romero, hitting the front entering the back straight on the final lap. Scotland's Selman came around Romero on the outside, chasing after Shanahan, who seemed to be holding her off, only for the Scot to find that little "extra" in the last 10m, to take maximum 12 points for Scotland with 2:04.73, while Louise (2:04.82) added 10 points to Ireland's tally, which led to ireland's third placing from the six nations involved: Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Spain and Portugal

Plant a tree instead of taking a t-shirt at Cork City Marathon

[Webmaster's comment: As a leading Running Personality said to me a while back: "How Many Technical Tops do you need?" ....So please have a think on whether you really need to add another top to your, possibly growing, collection. Why not follow Cork City Marathon's suggestion below]

This year for Cork City Marathon 2022 we want to create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly marathon. We are passionate about making the earth a priority

We are committed to reducing our waste, using green suppliers where possible and using environmentally friendly, compostable materials for our race. This year we came up with the initiative for participants to plant a tree instead of taking a t-shirt which will continue for the future

Making a t-shirt has a significant environmental impact. A single cotton t-shirt requires the same amount of water that a human drinks in 2.5 years, as well as over 2kg of eCO2. All of those precious resources will have been wasted if it is never worn. Technical t-shirts are synthetic clothes, they are made of materials like polyester, which generate tiny plastic fibres when washed, which eventually flow into rivers and the sea. Research suggests that synthetic fabrics are responsible for up to 35% of all the microplastics polluting the ocean

Planting a tree also has significant environmental benefits. It aids in the fight against climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, as well as providing a habitat for a variety of species and providing us with clean air to breathe

Therefore, we will plant a tree on behalf of every runner that decides not to take a t-shirt.
Our new partnership with An Dúlra to re-establish native woodlands in Ireland

For this initiative, we have partnered with An Dúlra to re-establish native woodlands in Ireland

From this year on, participants can choose to plant a tree instead of taking a t-shirt. Anybody who has registered already will have the option to change their t-shirt choice for a tree. We’ll be in touch with everybody who has registered already in the coming days

An Dúlra works with Irish Tree Planting organisations and The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine to ensure that any of their forests receive the correct license to establish native woodlands. They have long term business strategies such as networking with beekeepers to have hives within their forests or mixing native fruit trees within their forests to create organic food sources

One reason why we decided to partner with An Dúlra is that they purchase land in Ireland that is suitable for planting native trees and follow the correct licensing process to ensure that the trees are planted with oversight. It also means that any forests that they establish are legally required to remain as native woodland for centuries, ensuring that the trees will grow to a mature forest that will capture carbon and create a habitat with biodiversity in mind

Over the centuries, Ireland experienced near-total destruction of its forests mainly because of human activity and a deterioration of the climate: from an initial forest cover of around 80% to less than 1%. Ireland is the only country in Europe where such complete forest destruction took place

By runners supporting this initiative, An Dúlra will plant trees on Cork City Marathon’s behalf in Co. Roscommon and Co. Mayo to help to re-establish the land back into a sustainable forest. We are also working with the Cork City Council’s tree officer to support local initiatives in future years.
By sponsoring a tree, you will help to make this happen!

Youghal AC Girls Head to Lisbon for ECCC Cross-Country This Weekend

YOUGHAL GIRLS HEAD TO LISBON

In what was a good day for Cork athletes at last November’s Irish Life Health/National Cross-Country Championships at Santry Demesne, a performance that slipped somewhat under the radar was that of the Youghal AC girls who won the U18 team title and, with virtually the same squad, finished second in the Junior (U20) grade

Following that achievement, the five athletes in question – Avril Millerick, Emma Landers, Avril Cashman, Alex Cashman and Robyn Buckley – have qualified for a dream trip to compete in next Sunday’s prestigious European Champion Clubs C-C in Lisbon. Around 400 runners from more than 20 countries, representing 70 clubs, are expected to contest the five races which take place in Oeiras, on the suburbs of Portugal’s capital

For the delighted Youghal girls, it’s something that came completely out of the blue, as 17-year-old Avril Cashman explained: “We didn’t expect this at all; the main thing at the national championships was the team performance. We’ve done well every year with this group which has now been together since we were nine or 10.”

Another Avril – Avril Millerick – led the club home that day and since has been on representative duty at the Celtic International in Belfast, leading the Irish to silver medals: “I came 14th overall; it was tough going over the 4km distance. I’ve ran in Scotland two years ago and I’m definitely looking forward to this trip.” Not yet 17, Avril was just four places from making the Irish U20 team last November and with three more years in that grade she certainly has a lot to look forward to

Emma Landers, 17, has two National under-age titles to her credit while Alex Cashman, 16, sister of Avril, has run for Ireland in the schools’ steeplechase. Robyn Buckley, 17, along with both Cashman girls, is also involved with Youghal GAA in camogie and football. As both Robyn and Avril Cashman are doing the Leaving Cert, training has to be fitted in with studies. “We train around five days a week, it can be difficult at times but you have to prioritise,” says Avril

A remarkable achievement of the team is that more or less the same group have won national titles seven of the last eight years. No doubt a major factor in this success is down to the expertise, dedication and enthusiasm of their coach, Noel Curtin. “This was the first time we had a junior team in the national championships, so this trip was totally unexpected,” explained Noel

“Athletics Ireland have said they will retrospectively compensate us after the event for travel and we are also very grateful to the local Credit Union who have been very good to us for many years. I’ve been involved in coaching the girls for the most of nine years; we train in the club’s facility at Tower Park along with places like Glenbower Wood

“The girls are great role models; they’re dedicated while at the same time having a great sense of fun. They are excellent in welcoming and including new recruits to the club. Also, you can never overstate the importance of support from parents and in this regard all probably have parents who run themselves as well.”

Kieran Quinn, Marketing & Business Development Officer at Youghal Credit Union, stated they were more than happy to get involved: “We delighted to sponsor the girls going to Portugal, we wish them the best of luck and may they represent both Youghal and Ireland well.”
