1972 Fermoy Cross-Country Championship Recalled - Guest Article by John Walshe

MEMORABLE FERMOY CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP

January 2nd 1972

This article by John Walshe, appeared in The Echo, on Thursday December 30th 2021

fermoy cross country january 1972

First three in the Cork Senior C-C at Fermoy 50 years ago: John Hartnett (Grange); John Buckley (St Finbarr's); Donie Walsh (Leevale)

The Grange-Fermoy Athletic Club (formerly known as Grange AC) celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2020 with a four-mile road race, confined to an elite entry due to restrictions then in place

Last July, a similar open event was held and on this New Year’s Eve this progressive club break new ground with an inaugural 10km road race which has already reached its quota of entries

Exactly 50 years ago this Sunday – January 2, 1972 – a famous race which was eagerly awaited by athletics fans took place at Fermoy. It featured a showdown between three of Cork’s greatest-ever runners - John Hartnett, Donie Walsh and John Buckley. The occasion was the Cork BLE senior, youths and women’s cross-country championships and the venue was Grange, just outside the town

Nowadays, the county senior usually takes place in October but the reason the championships were so late that season was to facilitate the aforementioned Hartnett and Walsh who, along with Billy Bolster, were home for Christmas from their respective American universities. Hartnett and Walsh attended Villanova and both came with impeccable cross-country pedigrees

Less than two years before, in March 1970, Hartnett had won the International Junior title at Vichy in France while later that year Walsh would finish second to the legendry Steve Prefontaine at the NCAA championships. Five months before that Grange fixture, Walsh had also set an Irish 10,000m record of 28:52.6 at the European Championships in Helsinki

John Buckley did not chose the scholarship route, instead remaining at home where he carved out a special niche for himself on the cross-country front. At the age of 19 the St Finbarr’s man was already a county senior champion and in March 1969 he had the distinction of beating the then Olympic 5000m champion, Mohammed Gammoudi, at the International Military Championships held in Ballincollig

In ideal conditions, the scene therefore was set for an epic encounter before a large attendance at the well laid-out Grange course. But first, two other county championships had to be decided. The youths (under-18) race was over three miles and here victory went to Gene Mealy of Leevale who led home John McSweeney (Blarney) and Denis Hartnett, brother of John, from Grange

Maire Buckley, who had finished second in the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship, added the County Senior title in impressive fashion with Joan Fleming (St Finbarr’s) and Tracy Roche (Grange) taking silver and bronze

As the field of 61 toed the line for the start of the 7½ mile senior race, all eyes were on local man Hartnett. From the gun, the pace was fast with the 22-year-old Grange athlete at the head of affairs. Already, runners were strung out with only Buckley, Bolster, the St Finbarr’s pair of Richie Crowley and Finbarr Long, along with Hugh Parnell of Leevale, managing to stay in contact. Walsh, who had been out of action with a leg injury a month before, was dramatically back in 10th place and his chances of retaining the title had vanished

Into the second mile, Hartnett had shaken off all except the resolute Buckley who somehow was managing to stay in his shadow. For the next four miles they ran shoulder to shoulder with Buckley even applying the pressure on a number of occasions as Hartnett suffered briefly from a stitch. But with a mile to go the Grange star put in a hard surge while negotiating a climb and Buckley’s gallant challenge faded, leaving Hartnett to cross the line with around 100 yards in hand after 36 minutes and 38 seconds of running

Walsh – as he did so often in a glittering career – finished stronger than everyone else to take the bronze with Crowley fourth and Long (winner of the Youghal Round-the-Houses race two nights before) in fifth. With Parnell running out of his skin in sixth position, further superb packing by Leevale saw Pat O’Riordan, Jack O’Callaghan and Tony O’Leary take seventh, eight and ninth positions with their final scorer, Dick Hodgins, making a comeback after injury, closing in the team in 11th

Having also won the youths and women’s team titles, it had been one of the great days in the annals of the Leevale club. And, as the Evening Echo reported on the following Wednesday, the three cups were duly filled in Pa Johnson’s Pub that Sunday night

For the three main protagonists, that Olympic year of 1972 brought varying fortunes. Shortly after returning to America, Hartnett ran indoor times of 8:35 for two miles and 13:29 for three. Later in the year he established an Irish 5000m record of 13:43.0 when finishing ninth behind Dave Bedford’s European record of 13:17.2 at Crystal Palace

In Munich, suffering from injury, he was eliminated in the heats of the Olympic 5000m. He would go on break Ronnie Delany’s Irish mile record with a time of 3:54.7 and on a memorable night run a mile in 3:56.3 on the old Mardyke grass track at the Cork City Sports

Walsh also suffered injury problems on his return to Villanova and just missed out on the Olympic qualifying time for the 10,000. Deciding to go for the marathon instead, he made his debut at the Irish championships in Athlone which he won in an outstanding 2:15:21. At Munich, despite suffering from ‘flu symptoms, he gamely tried to go with the leaders before drifting back to finish 47th in 2:31

For Buckley, the fact that he was able to stay with Hartnett for so long showed the form he was in. He duly won the BLE National C-C at Clonmel to add to the Southern Region and Inter-Counties he had already won that season. The International (now World) Championships were held in March at Cambridge and there Buckley finished sixth of the Irish team in 62nd position

Senior Registrations as at December 31st 2021

While the registrations make no distinction on the competitive level of registered members, our Provincial and National champions and contenders, along with International representatives are more than likely to come from these ranks.  Cork, with 472 Senior members trail Dublin's 1126. This points to a significant problem in attracting and retaining athletes in the range 18 to 34

As last year, the overall age distribution throws up some interesting observations:
There are two distinct distributions, based around Young Juveniles and Masters Athletes, with older Juveniles and Seniors literally nowhere to be seen

Juvenile Age Distribution

cork athletics juvenile age distribution 2021

Senior Age Distribution

cork athletics senior members age distribution 2021

Masters Age Distribution

cork athletics masters members age distribution 2021

From age 8 to 16, Juvenile girls outnumber boys. There is a distinct drop off after age 14, and the numbers from age 16 to 34 - including all seniors - makes  dismal reading.  The situation is not helped by the pandemic situation, however, once athletics emerges at the other side of the Covid crisis, strategies to address the low senior numbers, and retention of Juveniles

The drop off of Juveniles has been noted across many sports in Ireland, and is worrying from a number of perspectives, not just athletics membership. In particular the non-participation of juveniles, along with the related and alarming growth in obesity, among juveniles and younger adults, is almost certainly going to lead to a significant rise in general population health issues in the coming years

From an athletics perspective, the low numbers between 18 and 35 is of particular concern, as this is the group from which our Championship, International and Olympic hopes will emerge.  Historically, Cork has 'punched above its weight' in producing European, World and Olympic Champions and medalists, along with many, many International athletes.  To continue this proud and valued heritage, we really need to be attracting, and retaining, more people in this age range

Adults - Average Age by Club

A bit of random info - The Average Age of adult club members.  There is a HUGE disclaimer going with this particular data.... it includes all adult members, including coaches and club management, many of whom may have retired from competitive participation. Nevertheless it is also a clear indication of the active, and welcome, continuation in the sport by older athletes

Bad weather probably put paid to hopes of a big turnout at the 37th GOAL Mile at MTU Track this morning.  Nevertheless several hundred runners and walkers had turned up by 11am, braving, sometimes, 'monsoon-like' conditions. This was particularly the case for the first race of the day

One of the fastest races of the day came in Race 3, won by Eoghan O'Connor, Belgooly AC, in 4:31, with his brother Darragh in second place

If you missed any of today's GOAL Miles, you can still do your 2021 GOAL Mile tomorrow, St. Stephen's Day, Sunday December 26th, in Tramore Valley Park, between 10:30am and 12 Noon, or on Saturday next, New Year's Day, in Kanturk, at 11am

Athletics Ireland Launch Online Race Permit Application System

New Online Event Permit Application System

aai permit a

On Friday December 10th, Athletics Ireland launched it's long promised online permit system.  It is intended that the new system should supercede the old paper system, however much has yet to be clarified

Probably the biggest hurdle still to be overcome is the fact that the Counties, who must approve all permits for events in their own respective county, have yet to receive instruction or information on how the system works, and how they can approve or reject any application

Test Drive of Online Permit System

The last In-Person Athletics Ireland Congress, held in Carrick-on-Shannon, in 2018, debated and approved a Cork Motion requiring all permit applications to be approved by the County in which they are being held

In the absence of Instruction/Guidance from Athletics Ireland, it is not clear if this requirement is embedded in the new system. Furthermore, Cork, in common with many other counties, have their own Permit Bye-Laws

It is understood, from discussions with Athletics Ireland, that these have not been incorporated in the online system.  Of particualr concern to Cork is the requirement for at least 36 hours separation between events that are geographically separated by 30km, or less.  This Bye-Law was proposed by clubs and approved at the 2017 Cork Athletics AGM

Cork Athletics Webmaster has taken the Club Permit Application for a 'test drive'. The first section deals with the Club making the application, and details about the event, including Event Name, date, and time of the event. All of which apprear, at first glance, straight forward. However the Club Name, selected from the dropdown

Included are all Athletics Ireland Clubs, along with lapsed clubs, and clubs the do not meet all Athletics Ireland Club Registration requirements

Also included are a small number of 'dummy' clubs, which were, apparently used for test purpose, but not removed before the system went live

List of Approved Permits

A Fundamental Requirement of the system surely is the inclusion of all current approved permits. Sadly this is missing. At the time of writing, only one (yes! 1) event is listed on the Athletics Ireland Event Calendar - Limerick Hospice 10k, on January 30th. Yet Cork alone has no less than thirty (30) approved events on the 2022 Calendar, along with several approved for 2023

athletics ireland event calendar dec 22 2021

It is disappointing that there has not been full discussion on the new system, along with opportunities to test the system before it went live. The absence of a full calendar of approved events is incomprehensible. A fundamental requirement of the system, and of the organisation, is the listing of all approved permits, however Athletics Ireland has not published a list of approved events for well over two years - since well before the pandemic

Once the system is fully implemented, and approved events are listed, it should prove a valuable resource for all users, from county Boards, Clubs and event participants... but it would have been great if everything was running smoothly before the system went live

In the absence of a full listing from AAI, Cork Athletics has been including other AAI events on the Cork Athletics Event Calendar, these include AAI fixtures in the surrounding Munster counties, namely, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford

 Online Permit Access Portal

The system is accessed via the Permit Portal on the Athletics Ireland Website. There are, as before, four choices:

Club Permit Application

School Permit Application

Charity Permit Application

Commercial/International Permit Application

aai permit b

In the first panel, the host club is selected from the dropdown list. This list contains the entire National listing of Registered Athletics Ireland Clubs - see image below

aai permit b1

As can be seen above, the list includes a number of 'Dummy Clubs', which were used for Test Purposes, and which should havebeen deleted before the system went live.

Additionally, the list includes defunct clubs, along with a small number of clubs that don't meet Athletics Ireland's requirements for minimum registered membership numbers, for example.  It should be relatively easy to adapt the system to automatically include only fully registered clubs

At first glance, it might appear easier if there was another Drop-Down box,to select the host county, and, from this, limit the dropdown list to clubs from that County, however, every year, a limited number of races in County Cork, for example, are hosted by clubs from other counties, via permits issued by Cork County Board, so the full national club listing is required

The remaining boxes in the first panel are straightforward:

  • Event Name
  • Event Date
  • Event Time

Venue Location Map

aai permit c

This section pinpoints the venue location. The default map centres on Dublin and you can use your mouse to scroll to your event location, however it's easier and quicker to use the search box, and then finetune by dropping the pin at the venue. The system will autofill precise details of Location, Latitude and Longitude

Use the "+" and "-" buttons to zoom in further. The above example is for an event at MTU Track

Event Detail Panel

The first dropdown list in this section is to select from:

  • Male
  • Female
  • Mixed

Most events will be Mixed, with Male or Female only events coming from Championships

Event Type Options are:

  • Road
  • Cross-Country
  • Track & Field
  • Race Walking

Event Organiser Details

This might have been better named Race Director Details. Name, email address and phone number for the event's primary contact should be entered here

  • aai permit e

Additional Permit Details

Again this panel might be better named as Medical Plan Details

The first box asks for the name of the event's Medical Cover provider. One wonders though, what medical cover the Civil Service provider.

It is possible to leave this box blank. This should not be the case

The second box asks for the qualifications of the provider. It is not clear what specific detail is required here, but, one presumes, that something along the lines of "Medical Doctor", "Trained First Aider", "CPR Certified", etc.

Again, it is possible to leave this box blank. This should not be the case

The third panel asks "What Level of Service will they provide?" It is not clear what specifically is being asked for here. Some guidance would be of great help

Again, it is possible to leave this box blank. This should not be the case

Dehydration

This requires a simple "Yes" or "No" response.  The answer will depend on the time of year, the distance, expected humidity etc

Additional Medical Plan Details

The final few panels are mainly Yes & No dropdowns and refer to:

  • Ambulance
  • Defibrillator
  • Whether Medical Personnel will be on bicycles on the course

With the remaining panel for details of Medical Personnel locations around the course
