New Start and Wave Start for Cork City Half-Marathon 2022

Cork City Half Marathon has New Start and Wave Start

Sunday June 5th 2022

The Cork City Half-Marathon Start has moved to Monaghan Road, further along the route from previously, eliminating the Victoria Road Roundabout. The move has been facilitated by adding a loop around part of the new Park/Plaza on the city side of Páirc Uí Caoimh and through part of the Páirc Uí Caoimh car-park, before coming back down in front of the stadium, and rejoining the previous course at approx. 1.4 Miles

The First Two Miles

The course now starts on Monaghan Road, east of Kennedy Park. It then continues along Monaghan Road, passing CAB and entering the Atlantic Pond amenity area, turning left towards the all weater pitches and the Blackrock end of the stadium...and proceeding as below

The course skirts the eastern side of the All-Weather pitches, before turning left and passing in front of the stadium. It then continues directly ahead to the new Plaza, taking a right around the 'grassy flood zone', and then enters the Páirc Uí Caoimh gated car-park, heading right again, at the city end of the stadium.  After passing through the gates on the Ballintemple side, the course swings left and again passes in front of the stadium - the two parallel, but opposite direction, streams of runners will be separated by barriers/tapes. At the Blackrock end of the stadium, the course swings left and rejions the previous course.  This new start should make for a faster start

AIMS/World Athletics Measurement

The Half-Marathon course, along with the Marathon course, has been remeasured this year, in accordance with AIMS regulations, having last beeen measured in 2017.  Remeasurement would have been required in any case, due to the change in the course. The courses were measured by John Quigley AIMS/World Athletics Grade 'A' International Measurer

Wave Start - Cork City Marathon Release May 25th 2022

Cork Half Marathon will start in 2 waves this year

"Cork Half Marathon has become the biggest race in Munster this year so far! As a result of this and to accommodate these record numbers the race will start in two waves

First or second wave?

Those hoping to run the race in 1 hour 58 minutes or faster will start in wave one. The 1 hour 50-minute pacers will be the last pacers in Wave 1. Once Wave 1 has cleared then Wave 2 will be led out shortly after by the 2-hour pacers so if you are hoping to follow this group of pacers and get in just under 2 hours then wave 2 is for you. Or if you are hoping to start off behind the 2-hour pacer and push on a little later in the race then wave 2 is for you also. The remaining pacers 2:10, 2:20 and 2:30 will also be in wave 2

Will I get my exact timing?

Runners will be split into two groups on arrival and all runners should be at the start line at 9:45am. Starting the race in two waves will boost your chances of a Personal Best as there will be less crowding on the course. These measures are in place in all big races from New York to London. Remember you will be Chip Timed so your time will start when you cross the start line regardless of what wave you are in. These measures will help to enhance your experience and hopefully help you to get that Personal Best you have been training so hard for"

AIMS Certification Confirmed for Cork City Marathon and Half-Marathon

Cork City Marathon AIMS Measurement Certificate 2022 Cork City Half-Marathon AIMS Measurement Certificate 2022

Good news this week with AIMS Certification of both the Cork City Marathon and Half-Marathon being confirmed on Friday last, following course re-measurement

AIMS certification is an entry requirement for many big Marathons and Half-Marathons, particularly the famed Boston Marathon, so the re-certication of the Cork courses is a major coup for the event, and ensures that anyone achieving qualifying times, in Cork, for the Marathon Majors, will have 'made the grade'

The courses were last measured in 2017, and AIMS certification lasts 5 years - unless the course(s) change - so full remeasurement of both courses was required this year

Certification by AIMS requires that the course is measured by an AIMS A or B International Grade Measurer. This year, as since 2007, the course was measured by John Quigley, AIMS Grade A Measurer

Subject to ratification, Michael Harty, East Cork AC, broke the Irish Masters M40 record, at last night's Bob Heffernan & Mary Hanley 5k Road Race, in Enfield, Co Meath. Michael ran 14:20, for third place, behind Paul O'Donnell (DSD AC), 14:00, and Peter Somba (Dunboyne AC), 14:17.  Michael's time was one (1) second inside Brian Maher's previous record of 14:21

Setting the new record last night must have provided Michael with some satisfaction after last month's Streets of Kilkenny 5k, where, running 14:14, Michael was credited with breaking the record, only for the organisers to issue a statement, some days later, disclosing that the course had been found to be short, so the 'record' set that day cannot stand

While the shortfall has not been stated, it has been reported, unofficially, to have been some 60m short.   Also inside the 'record' that night, was existing record holder Brian Maher, from the host club, Kilkenny City Harriers, just two places and four seconds behind Michael

Louise Shanahan Sets Sub 2 Minute Irish 800m Record - May 14th 2022

1:59.42 Irish 800m Record for Louise Shanahan

Irish Milers Club Meet, Belfast

Saturday May 14th 2022

Louise Shanahan, Leevale AC, set a new Irish Women's 800m record of 1:59.42, becoming only the second Irish woman to go sub 2 minutes for the two lap event.  In doing so she catapulted herself from 11th place to first in the Irish All-Time standings.  In a storming head-to-head with Ciara Mageean, the record holder, Louise produced the 'gutsier' finish to surpass the Co. Down girl, who finished in 1:59.82

Along with the Record, Louise's time is also inside the qualification standards for both the World Championships, which will be held in Eugene, Oregon, USA, in July, and the European Championships, which will be held in Munich, Germany, in August

Athletics Ireland Report

SHANAHAN STORMS TO NEW IRISH 800M RECORD

Louise Shanahan (Leevale AC) has produced the run of her life to secure a new Irish 800m record of 1:59:42 at the Irish Milers Club meeting in Belfast today (May 14th)

The Leevale star went head-to-head with fellow Tokyo Olympian Ciara Mageean at the Belfast meet, eventually coming out on top to break the record previously held by Mageean (1:59:69). The record breaking performance also secured the qualification standards for the World Championships in Oregon, as well as the European Championships in Munich which both take place later this summer

Shanahan raced tactically from the gun, staying in touching distance of Mageean before unleashing her final challenge down the home straight. Mageean fought back and ultimately crossed in a superb season opener of 1:59:82

Irish Independent Reprt by Cathal Dennehy

Louise Shanahan produced a magnificent performance at the Irish Milers Club meeting in Belfast on Saturday to break the Irish 800m record, the Tokyo Olympian clocking 1:59.42 to out-kick previous record holder Ciara Mageean

“This is out of my wildest dreams, I can’t believe it,” said Shanahan, whose previous best was the 2:01.44 she ran in Belfast last year.

“I felt really good today and loved every minute of the warm-up. It was perfect conditions and Ciara was the perfect wind-block through the entire race.”

Shanahan ran behind Mageean – who held the Irish record at 1:59.69 – through the first 750 metres before fighting past her fellow Olympian the run to the line, with Mageean clocking 1:59.82 in second in her season debut

They are now the only two Irishwomen in history to have broken two minutes for 800m

“I saw 1:29 going through 600 and I felt really good,” said Shanahan. “It’s a two-second PB and on Tuesday I was considering not racing, my coach was trying to convince me I was in shape. The goal this year was to break 2:01, so to smash that in my first race is amazing.”

Shanahan’s time qualifies her for both the World Championships in Eugene in July and the Europeans in Munich in August

John Cronin, President, Athletics Ireland and Hamish Adams, CEO, Athletics Ireland have accepted an invitation to attend Cork Athletics County Board's Monthly meeting, on Wednesday May 11th, at MTU Track

Pat Walsh, Acting Chairman of Cork County Board has said that the portion of the meeting allocated to the Board's AAI Guests will, of necessity, be limited to 45 minutes maximum, as there is a considerable amount of 'normal business' to be discussed, along with the remaining/upcoming Juvenile T&F Championships, the Evening T&F Meets (incorporating the County Junior, Senior & Masters Championships), the Board's involvement in Stewarding 3 sections of the Cork City Marathon, and planning for September's Women's Mini-Marathon...to list just some of the items

Footnote Re:Stewards for Cork City Marathon

34207438 race marshal

Several clubs and individuals have responded to Pat Walsh's call for Stewards for the Cork City Marathon, on Sunday June 5th, however we are still considerably short of our requirements. Cork Athletics manages and stewards some 60% of the course, from the Start Line to Tivoli (0 to 5 Miles), then from the Marina to the Finish line (15 Miles to 26.2 Miles), incorporating the Victoria Road and Model Farm Road relay changeover stations, and all road junctions along those sections. Effectively, the County Board covers Relay Legs 1, 4 and 5

Incentive to Clubs Providing Stewards for Marathon

Cork Athletics expects to need about 105 stewards, to cover its areas of responsibility in the Marathon. For the more recent live Cork City Marathons, we were about 20 people short. Consequently, Cork County Board has decided to offer member clubs a financial fundraising incentive, similar to that of the Grant Thornton, for each steward that a club provides

The Board receives payment for it's Stewarding, and management of it's sections, from Cork City Marathon. This, along with similar fees for events such as the Grant Thornton 5k, and revenue from the Mini-Marathon, are the Board's 'Life-Blood', providing much needed funds for all it's activities, including providing travel and subsistence payments for County Juvenile, Senior and masters representative teams.
