Athletics Ireland Release

STRONG IRISH TEAM SELECTED FOR EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Athletics Ireland are delighted to announce a squad of over 35 athletes for the upcoming European Athletics Championships in Munich on August 15-21

Previous European championship medal winners Thomas Barr (Ferrybank AC), Ciara Mageean (City of Lisburn AC), and Mark English (Finn Valley AC) will spearhead the Irish contingent alongside world indoor finalist Sarah Lavin (Emerald AC)

The Irish relay teams have enjoyed tremendous success in global competition over the past 12 months and the women’s 4x400m team looks particularly strong with Rhasidat Adeleke (Tallaght AC), Phil Healy (Bandon AC), Sophie Becker (Raheny Shamrock), Sharlene Mawdsley (Newport AC), Cliodhna Manning (Kilkenny City Harriers), and Roisin Harrison (Emerald AC) all confirmed to travel to Munich

Four-time Olympian Fionnuala McCormack (Kilcoole AC) heads up a strong women’s marathon team (all previously selected) which also includes Aoife Cooke (Eagle AC) and Ann Marie McGlynn (Letterkenny AC)

McCormack will be joined in Munich by fellow Tokyo Olympians Andrew Coscoran (Star of the Sea AC), Sarah Healy (UCD AC), Louise Shanahan (Leevale AC), Marcus Lawler (Clonliffe Harriers), David Kenny (Farranfore Maine Valley AC), Brendan Boyce (Finn Valley AC), Chris O'Donnell (North Sligo AC), Eilish Flanagan (Finn Valley AC), Leon Reid (Menapians AC), Michelle Finn (Leevale AC), and Alex Wright (Leevale AC)

The team also includes an excellent blend of developing athletes including Kate O'Connor (Dundalk St. Gerards AC), and the recent record-breaking UCD pair of Darragh McElhinney and Israel Olatunde

Speaking at today’s team announcement, Athletics Ireland Director of High Performance, Paul McNamara said:

“With 31 individual athletes selected this is the largest cohort we have ever sent to a major championship, despite the higher qualification standards than any previous edition of this championships, and with 25 athletes inside the A standard.  This team includes multiple athletes, both seasoned campaigners and rising stars, that are primed to make an impact, demonstrating both enhanced depth and breadth in our athlete cohort. It’s been a busy season with World Championships and Commonwealth Games for many of this squad, but the European Championships has been the primary focus for 2022”

Nicholas Griggs ran a sensible race to finish 4th, in 8:08.35, with 6 to qualify automatically. The leaders went off early on, but Nicholas held back, bringing a possee through behind him, until about half-way, when he gradually went away from the peleton, to qualify comfortably for the Final

Reece Ademola, Leevale AC

Reece Ademola, Leevale AC, got off to a tremendous start in this afternoon's Men's Long Jump.  His first jump, 7.76m, proved to be his longest, and also the longest in Pool B, his qualification group... and 4th longest overall, between both Long Jump Qualification groups

Not only that, but he also set a new Irish National Under 20 record, surpassing the previous record of 7.73m, set by Ciarán McDonagh in 1995. It also moves Reece up to fourth place on the Irish all-time list

Reece’s 7.76m also moves him to fourth place on the all-time standings, behind Ciarán McDonagh’s senior record of 8.07m, set in 2005. Reece'soutdoing his previous 7.68m record, set just last month in Cork.

Reece went into the event in top form, having won the National Under-20 Title and finishing in fifth place at the National Senior Championships recently. He set his previous best of 7.68m, set at last month's Cork City Sports

Afterwards Reece said “I’m shocked, to be honest, but delighted,” he said. “It’s big adrenaline for tomorrow. I’ll get a rest now, come in replenished for tomorrow and just kick ass.”

The Long Jump Final is set for tomorrow night, Tuesday 2nd Aug, at 10:16pm Irish time

Deadline - August 24th 2022

Transfer Image

Cork Athletics Facebook page

Athletes wishing to transfer clubs are reminded that the deadline for the return of fully completed transfer forms is Wednesday August 24th.  Forms received after that date will NOT be accepted

Transfer forms may be downloaded from the Athletics Ireland website

The Sequence and Procedure on the form MUST be followed

Completed Transfer Forms

Completed forms should be given to Cork AAI County Board Registrar, John Copithorne, or posted to him at John Copithorne, Registrar Cork AAI County Board, Belgooley, Co. Cork.

  • Do NOT call to John Copithorne's house
  • Do NOT send your form by Registered Post, Courier or other form of delivery, except the regular Post
  • Do NOT send your completed form to Athletics Ireland HQ (Dublin), as this will severely affect delivery time, likely missing the deadline.

Closing date is Wednesday August 24th

Completed Transfer Forms may be submitted at any stage, but will not be reviewed by Cork Athletics County Board until after August 24th. However early submission allows time for the return and resubmission of forms that are incomplete or contain an error of some form or other

The Transfer Form MUST be signed in the following order

By the:

•   Member (in the case of a minor, by their parent or guardian)

•   New Club

•   Outgoing Club

•   County Board (outgoing club)

•   Outgoing County Board (for out of county club transfer only)

•   Incoming County Board (for inter-county transfer only)

Incomplete, improperly, or incorrectly completed forms will be rejected

Notes:

  • Athletes must be in good stead with the outgoing club, i.e. they must not owe any membership  fee, or other arrears, and all club property in their possession must have been returned
  • Athletes whose membership of the outgoing club has lapsed by more than three years do NOT require a transfer, i.e. they are free to change clubs without going through the formal transfer process - they can be simply registered by the incoming club.  Note: Effectively this means that anyone transferring, who has been registered in ANY of the years 2019, 2020, 2021 or 2022 will need to fill out a Transfer Form

Next Transfer Window, following August 24th 2022, will close on March 24th 2023
