European Cross-Country Championship Course - Chia 2016

Athletic Ireland Press Release - Feidhlim Kelly

Blockbuster weekend highlighted by European Cross-Country Championships

There is an action-packed weekend of athletics ahead, headlined by the European Cross Country Championships in Chia, Italy on Sunday, December 11

The SIAB Schools' International Combined Events will be hosted in Ireland for the first time, in Athlone IT, tomorrow, December 10, while the Irish Life Health National Novice and Uneven Age Cross Country Championships will also take place on Sunday in Dundalk IT

Italian job awaits for Irish team at Euro Cross

A twentyeight strong Irish team will compete against Europe’s finest cross-country runners in Chia, Italy on Sunday, December 11.

Fionnuala McCormack (Kilcoole) is, Ireland’s headline act, where she will be hoping to get back on to the individual medal rostrum as well as guiding the women’s team to another podium position. Coming of the back of her recent emphatic win against a world-class field, in Atapuerca, Spain, McCormack will be vieing to become the first woman to win the European Cross-Country Championship for a third time.

She will be supported on the team by Shona Heaslip (An Riocht), Kerry O’Flaherty (Newcastle), Ciara Mageean (UCD), Laura Crowe (An Riocht) and Michelle Finn (Leevale).

Michelle Finn National Road Relays 2015

Mageean will be hoping the firm surface will suit her in Chia in an effort to replicate her junior form over cross country where she finished 7th in the junior race in 2010. The Portaferry woman has been returning to her cross country roots properly since getting into a full rhythm and an injury free build-up. The team has added experience in O’Flaherty and Finn who impressed in the summer in the 3,000m steeplechase having made the European final and competed in the Olympics.

McCormack will spearhead the team and a podium position will be in her sights. McCormack will face stiff competition from the likes of Turkey’s Yasemin Can and Meryem Akda. Can cruised to the European 10,000m title in Amsterdam and will be dangerous once more in Chia. Another serious contender will be Norway’s Karoline Grovdal, who was a bronze medallist in Hyeres last year.

An experienced senior men’s team will be led by Mark Christie (Mullingar Harriers) who won the Irish Life Health National Cross Country Championships impressively. Christie has had a hiatus from the European cross since 2010 but has plenty of experience to produce a solid showing alongside Mick Clohisey (Raheny Shamrock), Mark Hanrahan (Leevale), Liam Brady (Tullamore Harriers), Paul Pollock (Annadale Striders) and Kevin Dooney (Raheny Shamrock).

Blooding the next generation

It will be a case of blooding the next generation in the U23 and junior races.

Bethanie Murray (DSD) and Amy O’Donoghue (Emerald) will lead Irish hopes in the women’s U23 race with Karl Fitzmaurice (Ennis Track) and Mitchell Byrne (Rathfarnham) representing in the men’s U23 race.

Jack O’Leary (Mullingar Harriers A.C.) is the most experience in the junior category at this level having finished 23rd last year with fellow fledglings Peter Lynch (Kilkenny City Harriers A.C.), Darragh McElhinney (Bantry A.C.), Fearghal Curtin (Youghal A.C.), Barry Keane (Waterford A.C.) and Charlie O'Donovan (Leevale A.C.) looking to gain further experience.

Sophie Murphy (Dundrum South Dublin A.C.) finished 54th in the junior race and she will be aiming to improve upon that position with Amy Rose Farrell (Blackrock A.C.), Emma O'Brien (Inbhear Dee A.C./Sli Cualann), Carla Sweeney (W.S.A.F A.C.), Jodie McCann (Dundrum South Dublin A.C.), Aisling Joyce (Claremorris A.C.) sampling this level of competition.

The European Cross Country Championships will be televised on RTE 2 from 11am on Sunday.

The date of the 2017 Cork City Marathon was launched today, Wednesday December 14th, and, after months of wrangling with planning and logistics, the 2017 event is set for Sunday June 4th, breaking with the long-standing association with Bank Holiday Monday.

The formal launch is set for next week, the photo-shoot having taken place on Wed, Dec 14th.

Holding the event on a Sunday brings many new challenges to the organisers, but it is hoped that the change will bring new growth to the popular series, which includes the Cork City Marathon, and Cork City Marathon Relay, along with the growing popularity of the Cork City Half-Marathon.

The Marathon Route is likely to be largely the same, at least for the first half anyway.  Plans to eliminate the Jack Lynch Tunnel have been shelved, however changes in the second half of the course are still being explored.  One of the key points is to try to "flatten" the course.  It is also envisaged that the Half-Marathon start will change, particularly in light of the calamitous start to the 2016 'Half'

European Cross-Country Championships - Four Irish Top Ten Finishes

McCormack and O'Leary gallant as Ireland give their all in Italy

European Cross-Country Championships
Chia, Italy
Sunday December 11th 2016

Irish Squad European Cross Country Championships Chia 2016

Athletics Ireland Press Release - Feidhlim Kelly

Ireland deliver four top 10 team finishes at European Cross-Country Championships

Fionnuala McCormack (Kilcoole) was a fighting fifth on her record 14th appearance at the European Cross Country Championships in Chia, Italy today (December 11).

McCormack was understandably left frustrated as she was bidding for a record third European cross country title. The women’s 8,000m race was won by Turkey’s Yasemin Can in 24:46 with her compatriot Meryem Akda in second in 24:56 with Norway’s Karoline Grovdal bagging the bronze in 25:26. McCormack was pipped by Romania’s Ancuta Bobacel by one second in 25:27 to 25:28.

“This championships means so much to me,” said a disappointed McCormack afterwards who made the most appearances by a woman at these championships today.

“I really wanted to win. The Turks broke clear early and I never felt comfortable. I gave my best out there today but I think I’m better than that. There was a deceptive wind. I was chasing for gold and I’m really disappointed. I’ll be back for a 15th time next year in Slovakia.”

The women’s team finished 6th having been fighting for bronze for much of the race with Romania. Ciara Mageean (UCD) was next home in 31st, followed by Michelle Finn (Leevale) in 33rd, Kerry O’Flaherty (Newcastle) 54th, Shona Heaslip (An Riocht) in 59th, who unfortunately took a heavy fall on the last hill having been placed well, and Laura Crowe (An Riocht) in 60th. Turkey won the team title.

Jack O’Leary (Mullingar Harriers) made a bold move for gold in the men’s U20 6,000m race finishing an excellent 6th in 17:21. O’Leary followed Italy’s eventual silver medallist Yohanes Chiappinelli in a two-man breakaway but Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen came back for gold in 17:06.

This was a fine performance by the Mullingar Harrier who also led the team to a strong 6th place finish. Peter Lynch (Kilkenny City Harriers A.C.) was next home in 25th, Darragh McElhinney (Bantry A.C.) 39th, Barry Keane (Waterford A.C.) 47th, Fearghal Curtin (Youghal A.C.) 61st and Charlie O'Donovan (Leevale A.C.) 76th.

The U20 women had a strong showing to place 10th in the 4,000m race led home by Amy Rose Farrell (Blackrock) 24th in 13:35, Carla Sweeney (WSAF) 31st, Sophie Murhpy (DSD) 38th, Aisling Joyce (Claremorris) 55th, Emma O’Brien (Inbhear Dee/Sli Cualann) 64th, and Jodie McCann (DSD) 72nd.

In the U23 races Bethanie Murray (DSD) finished 46th with Amy O’Donoghue (Emerald) two places further back in 48th in the women’s 6,000m. It was won by Poland’s Sofia Ennaoui.

Karl Fitzmaurice (Ennis Track) finished 59th and Mitchell Byrne (Rathfarnham WSAF) 67th in the men’s U23 8,000m won by Belgium’s Isaac Kimeli.

The senior men made it four top ten performances for Ireland in 10th led home by Paul Pollock (Annadale Striders) 36th over 10,000m in 29:42. Mick Clohisey (Raheny Shamrock) was 43rd in 29:54, Mark Christie (Mullingar Harriers) was 56th, Liam Brady (Tullamore Harriers) was 62nd, Mark Hanrahan (Leevale) was 65th and Kevin Dooney (Raheny Shamrock) was 69th.  The race was won by Turkey’s Aras Kaya in 27:39.

Cork Athletics Registration Figures - November 2016

Leevale AC Logo
Ballymore Cobh

The Athletics Ireland Monthly National Registration Report for November has been published. Total National Registrations stand at 58,117, up 7.25% on the November 2015 figure of 54,188. On the other hand, Cork Registrations have risen 12.67%, from 6,931 to a record 7,809.

Clubs: There are currently 49 Athletics Ireland Registered Clubs in Cork, while a further two, possibly three are due to be ratified at Cork Athletics Annual Convention, in January next.

With the year-end rapidly approaching Registrations are unlikely to change significantly between now and the end of December, so standings are unlikely to change significantly. As per last month's report, Bandon AC and Leevale AC, followed by Ballymore Cobh AC, stand apart from the other clubs, with numbers other clubs can only dream of.  After them comes a group of four clubs; Midleton AC, North Cork AC, Youghal AC and Togher AC, all with in excess of three hundred (300) members. Nineteen clubs have less than 100 members, with one club, Glanimre AC, having less than the minimum requirement of ten (10) registered members.

1) Online entries will open on Wednesday December 7th at 2pm, when the first 1,000 will be accepted. At 8pm the same evening a further 1,000 will be accepted, making an initial online total of 2,000.    This entry route is now closed

Summary of Options for Non-Members of a registered Athletics Ireland/Athletics Northern Ireland Club

You have limited options, so will need to be quick off the mark.  If you have run all four races in the Ballycotton Summer Series, you can relax a little – you have the same options as a club member.

If not, you probably need to be online early, on Tuesday December 8th.  If you can’t, for whatever reason, it might be an idea to have someone do it for you.

If You Miss Out in the Initial Rush

If you miss out on the two online entry slots, you still have the option of hoping that your entry will be among the first 200 non-club postal entries opened.

A much more civilised and stress free way of entering is simply join a club.  You will find a list of Cork Athletics Registered Clubs on the Cork Athletics website, or nationally on the Athletics Ireland website.  Those on Northern Ireland will find club details on the Athletics Northern Ireland website.

“But I’m not good enough to join a club….?”
Don’t worry, most clubs will welcome you with open arms.  We all started with one foot in front of another.  Very, very few are gifted with natural talent….the rest of us have to work at it, and a club is a great place to bring your running form on pretty quickly.  ...and the social side can be great too. So….check it out!
