Cork Athletics expresses its thanks and appreciation to all the clubs and volunteer stewards, officials, recorders and everyone who helped make yesterday's 35th Evening Echo Mini-Marathon such a success.
This event raises much needed funds for Cork Athletics. The proceeds help Cork Athletics fund its competitions and Championships. In addition it enables the Board to organise training, in coaching, coach education, child protection and safety, along with grants for athletics related equipment. The Board also organises transport and accomodation for representative Cork teams.
Cork Athletics is a not-for-profit voluntary organisation. The Officers, Committee members and others who help to run the business of the Board are all volunteers, who give their time and expertise, free of charge, for the benefit of the athletes and the sport.

A behind the scenes look at the 35th Evening Echo Womens Mini-Marathon 2106. Pat Walsh gives instructions and safety briefing to some of the volunteer stewards, who will marshall and steward the route. Towards the end of the viideo, volunteers can be seen at the finish line, recording finishers numbers, distributing water and 'goodie bags' and tidying up the area.
All Cork Athletics volunteers are drawn from members clubs and supporters, who provide their time, expertise and experience entirely voluntarily and free of charge. Without these volunteers, neither this event, nor indeed any of Cork Athletics many events - Juvenile, Adult & Masters Events, including Track & Field, Road, Cross-Country, Coach Education and Child Protection, Technical and Safety Training - would not be possible.

Athletics Ireland will manage and administer the athlete carding scheme for all levels of carding. The carding scheme is a 'selection process' where by athletes must achieve performance criteria laid out within a Selection Policy to be considered for membership to the carding programme.
The carding scheme outlines Athletics Ireland's High Performance carding support programme known as the Operation Gold Performance Programme or 'OGPP'. The OGPP document outlines the programme support structures, selection process and policy, the selection panel, appeals process, and how athletes will be considered for carding at the various levels of the programme.
The Operation Gold Performance Programme will select and invest in athletes to provide “more opportunities” and to “achieve performance results” that will be supported on two levels:
1. Performance - Individual Carding: support athletes who can deliver on our performance goals and meet with the individual selection criteria set out within the different levels and age groups of:
Podium - World-Class -International, Development, Emerging Talent and Discretionary categories.
2. Opportunity - Team Ireland Carding: support athletes who do not meet with the criteria for individual carding but given an opportunity (identified as a potential and/or selected) to represent Athletics Ireland at a major championship.
Application Process: All currently carded and any newly considered athletes must (re)apply for carding each year. The applications for individual athlete carding can be filled out and submitted on AAI’s HP website. After selection, athletes will be notified and provided with additional information around carding support and other application requirements as needed for the OGPP.
The Selectors retain the overall discretion to consider an athlete for carding where an Application has inadvertently not been made. The process for individual carding:
1 Applications available on HP website (athletes will reapply and/or open to apply) - September 1st, 2016
2 Athletes will submit application for consideration to the OGPP - Sept: Track / XC

Silver for Eagle AC & Carrigaline's Niamh McCarthy and Ladysbridge's Orla Barry
Earlier this afternoon, 25 year old Orla Barry, from Ladysbridge, in East Cork, secured the Silver medal in the F57 Discus Final
At the Olympic stadium in Rio today Cork’s Orla Barry won silver in the Women’s Discus Final F57, to improve on her Bronze medal which she won in this event four years ago in London. The twenty five year old, had a second round throw of 30.06m which was enough to claim her podium place behind Algerian, Nassima Saifi, who took gold with a throw of 33.33.m.
Barry went into the competition ranked third with a personal best of 31.18 and although she didn’t hit that mark today the two time Paralympian had enough to hold off Eucharia Iyiazi from Nigeria who took Bronze.
Speaking after the event, Barry said, “I’m delighted; absolutely delighted. I have done one better this time. There were doubts during the week so to throw over thirty meters is fantastic, any day you can through over thirty meters is a good day. I am delighted to come through in the end.”
Speaking about the support she has behind her, Barry added; “My coaches, and my family; without them, I wouldn’t be here at all. Part of this medal belongs to all of them.” Barry continued, “I always said after Rio I would take it each year at a time and with world championships coming up, I will take a break now and concentrate on them.”

Tonight, North Cork AC's Noelle Linehan was the final Irish athlete into the arena at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. Making her Paralympic debut, in the F38 Final, 16 year old Noelle, from Milford, threw 31.71m in Round 1. This was to be her best throw and was good enough for Bronze. Both the Gold and Silver medalists were competing in the F37 category, so Noelle's first throw of 31.71m stands as a Womens F38 Paralympic Record.
Speaking to RTE, Noelle said “The competition was tough but there was a great atmosphere from the crowd, which really help with the performance.” Speaking about the pressure “I’m doing what I love to do.” “I always tried to keep busy and not sit down and think about it,” “I was just thinking of myself, block out what’s around me and focus on myself and what I can do to improve my throw.”
She thanked her father: “I was just thinking I have to do this for him because he’s not here.” “I can’t wait to see him. I want to thank him for so much for what he has done for me. He has been brilliant.” “We are a team and I can’t wait to go home to him. He’s probably crying his eyes out somewhere and that’s not even a joke. I come from a huge family and they’re more than proud already but I’m so happy to be able to go with a medal.”
On the Homecoming to Charleville: “It’s is going to be mad, I can’t wait to go home to them because they’re going to go crazy. I can’t wait.”
The Gold was won by Mi Na who threw a stunning F37 World Record of 37.50 with her opening round throw. Local heroine, Shirlene Coelho, set a Brazilian Record of 33.91 in her final round throw, and take the Silver medal.
Noelle is the current World Record Holder for the F38 Discus. In addition, she holds a Silver medal from the 2015 World Championships, and is the current European Champion, having won Gold in Grosetto, Italy, earlier this summer.

This month sees two major events in the Cork Athletics calendar. These are key fundraising events both for Cork Athletics, and also for it's member clubs.
The Evening Echo Womens Mini-Marathon is organised and hosted by Cork Athletics, and sponsored by Cork's Evening Echo, for the 35th year. The proceeds help Cork Athletics fund its competitions and Championships. In addition it enables the Board to organise training, in coaching, coach education, child protection and safety, along with grants for athletics related equipment. The Board also organises transport and accomodation for representative Cork teams.
The Vhi A Lust For Life Cork Airport 5k is organised and hosted by Cork Athletics, with the assistance of Cork athletics clubs, on behalf of Athletics Ireland and the Irish Independent. A portion of the entry fee is donated to the Cork City Hospitals Children's Club. Cork Athletics receives a fee for organising and hosting the event, and the clubs providing stewards for the event also receive funding. The funds received, both by Cork Athletics and it's member clubs, are ploughed back into athletics in Cork.
Cork Athletics is a not-for-profit voluntary organisation. The Officers, Committee members and others who help to run the business of the Board are all volunteers, who give their time and expertise, free of charge, for the benefit of the athletes and the sport.
Cork Athletics is a designated Sports Body, Registered GS Number 3014 - Cork County Board (Athletics Association of Ireland) - under Section 235 Taxes Consolidation Act, 1997
