Cork Athletics Registration Figures - October 31st 2017

Record Cork Athletics Registration Figures - October 31st 2017

cork athletics registration plate October 31st 2017

As at October 31st, Cork Athletics Registrations stood at 8,097 registered Cork Athletics-Athletics Ireland members, compared to 7,733 at the end of October 2016, representing an increase of 4.71%.  The December 2016 end of year figure was 7,822, so, with just under two months to go, to year end, registrations for the year are up 3.52%, however registrations generally slow down once the county cross-country championships have finished.

Registrations @ November 7th: 8,141

october registrations graph 2014 2017

The current registration figure of 8141 represents an increase of 25.5% on the 2014 figure, with year on year increases of 5.38%, 13.14% and 5.29% in the past three years.

All of Cork's fifty three registered clubs now have registered athletes, however, as per the past four months, Ballinacurra Villagers AC, with just 1 registered member, has less than the requisite ten (10) members to constitute an Athletics Ireland registered club.

At the May 2017 meeting of Cork Athletics County Board, Registrar, John Copithorne, said that many coaches and officials are continuing to be actively involved in Athletics,  but remain unregistered.

Unregistered athletes, coaches and/or officials are NOT covered by the Athletics Ireland insurance for any purpose whatsoever, leaving those athletes, officials, coaches and clubs in a precarious position.

Any club having difficulties registering their athletes should contact Cork Athletics Registrar, John Copithorne 0861713500

2017 Athletics Ireland Registrations are now Due

Clubs are reminded that UNREGISTERED athletes are NOT covered by Athletics Irelands insurance, for ANY purpose, training or competition.

Clubs are urged to register all remaining unregistered personnel without further delay.

Webmaster's Note: I have been 'Banging on' for ages about the Bandon Rugby Club case. The Irish Times reported on the case in April 1997.  Twenty years later, the judgement is still as relevant, and stands out as a warning to the consequences of not registering members of an organisation.  A further related Irish Times article advises clubs to ensure that members are registered.

Overall Registrations as at October 31st 2017

Leevale AC have consildated their position at the head of the list even further, ahead of Bandon AC, with nearly 750 members, an increase of 25% on last year's figure. Bandon are in solid second place, with almost 700 members, while third placed Ballymore-Cobh AC have also exceeded the 400 mark, with Midleton AC close behind, in fourth position. Youghal AC are in fifth place, with 327. Togher AC have now passed the 300 registrations mark, and Belgooly AC are within striking distance of the 300 registrations mark.   Eight more clubs have passed the 200 registrations mark, while another seventeen clubs have over 100 registered members. Thirty one of Cork's 53 registered clubs now have more than 100 registered members.

Sadly one club has less than the minimum required 10 members to constitute a valid Athletics Ireland club.

Winter-Coaching Series 2017 - Day 3 - High Jump Report

High Jump Report from Day 3 of Cork Athletics Winter Coaching Series 2017

By Martin O'Sullivan, High Jump Coach

CIT Track

Saturday October 28th 2017

winter coaching 2017 day 3 high jump banner

Well done again to all who attended on Saturday, the third day of the Cork Athletics winter Coaching Series. The weather was kind again to us on Saturday, which allowed us to get some good jumping in.

 Key points from Saturday’s session

•    Mat exercises with landing drills & bar clearance.
•    Introduction to the plant foot, i.e. where to plant and what angle.
•    Take off drills using hands and knees.
•    Running drills for proper curve and lean.
•    Key drills to do at home to improve / maintain technique.

After doing all the training jumps and drills etc, we did another PB challenge (Personal Best.), based on competition rules. There was a great turn-out for  this session, so many that we had to keep 4 heights going, starting at 0.85, 0.95, 1.00, 1.35 & 1.4m.

I guess it’s is no surprise that this part of the session has become so popular with all the athletes. It was great to see such a number of athletes giving High Jump a go, and to see all the young athletes mixing so well.

The social aspect of this session cannot be underestimated as athletics at times can be a lonely place, so it is very important to have a group together all involved in High Jump. Hopefully it will help them to be more relaxed in a competition setting.

As this was the third session, it is time to crunch the numbers and give all who are attending a goal, this goal is the jumping height which each athlete has the capability of achieving by the end of the series.

winter coaching 2017 day 3 high jump

Note: If you feel your athlete needs to move up or down in height please let me know at the next session.

As we are now mid way the grouping of athletes is more important so that they will get the best out of the session. There will be more jumping critiquing and adjusting at the higher heights while it’s more important just to focus on the basic technique at the lower heights. Please see attached the PB challenge tracker.

Again, Please note that this is open to all athletes on the day, so feel free to come on down and get a jump in.

Looking forward to meeting you all again in two weeks time, please spread the word to any more high jumpers out there who would be interested.

Thanks also to all those parents who helped out. (Very much appreciated :-)

Atheltics Ireland Report - Feidhlim Kelly

Laura Graham (Mourne Runners) and Freddy Kerron Sittuk (Raheny Shamrock) came out on top to take the National Marathon Titles at the SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon today (October 29).

Graham defended her title in 2:39:06, ahead of Caitriona Jennings (Letterkenny), in second with 2:42:36, and the evergreen Pauline Curley (Tullamore Harriers) in third, on 2:50:53.

It was bittersweet for Graham, as she fell a mere six seconds short of guaranteeing selection for the European Athletics Championships Marathon Cup team in Berlin next August.

And yet it was a brilliant run for the serial racer and marathon runner whose trophy cabinet continues to grow apace. She had to hold off a strong run from 2012 Olympian Caitriona Jennings, who went ahead of her twice during the race.

““It was tough,” said Graham afterwards, but she who was delighted to defend her national title. “I love it. I just enjoy it.”

Pauline Curley was equally ecstatic, and in slight shock, to have won the bronze medal – her 11th time on the podium.

In the men’s race, Freddy Sittuk was eligible to win the national title this year, and duly did so, crossing the line in 2:16:05, ahead of Gary O’Hanlon (Clonliffe Harriers), in second, in 2:18:52, with Sergiu Ciobanu (Clonliffe Harriers) in third in 2:19:05.

It was an incredible run from 43 year old O’Hanlon, who ran a personal best, having already run a pb in Berlin in September. The Louth native came through strongly in the last mile, passing his fellow club mate Stephen Scullion, who faded to an agonising fourth in 2:19:44.

Clonliffe dominated the men’s team race, with Sergiu Ciobanu gutting it out for third, having struggled early on from mile 6.

Weather conditions were ideal temperature-wise, but did have a bit of a gusting headwind – particularly into the finish at Fitzwilliam Square.

Thousands of runners donned their club vests to add great colour and energy alongside the other 20,000 competitors.

Athletics Ireland Release (Monday October 30th) - Feidhlim Kelly

Graham qualifies for Europeans

Laura Graham (Mourne Runners) punched her ticket for the European Athletics Championships Marathon Cup team, in Berlin next August, by winning the National Marathon Championship Title, at the Dublin Marathon, along with the qualifying standard from the Berlin marathon in September, when she ran 2:37:05.

The Mourne Runnners’ athlete secured selection with her time in Berlin, and the national crown, as per the selection policy, that the first finishing eligible athlete, male and female, will be selected, once they have achieved the 2017 Dublin Marathon performance standard of 2:18:00 (men) and 2:39:00 (women), or half marathon standard (65:00/75:00), at any time during the qualification period on, at least, one occasion.

Gary O’Hanlon Declared Irish National Marathon Champion 2017

gary o hanlon national marathon champion 2017
Athletics Ireland Release
- Feidhlim Kelly

Following a meeting of the Competition Committee of Athletics Ireland, on November 1st 2017, Gary O’Hanlon, Clonliffe Harriers AC, has been declared Irish National Marathon Champion 2017.

This follows receipt of information from Raheny Shamrock AC, on 31 October that Freddy Sittuk, the original declared winner of the championship, had not met the required criteria for eligibility, under the residency rule.

Prior to the event, Sittuk had been confirmed as eligible, by his club, when, in fact, he had not met all the necessary criteria.

Under the rule agreed by the delegates at the 2016 Athletics Ireland Congress, an athlete with an unbroken 6 months residency in Ireland immediately prior to the Championship, is eligible to compete for the National Championships title and medal positions.
Commenting on the situation, Athletics Ireland’s Competition Committee Chairman John Cronin said “the information initially received by the Association indicated that Freddy Sittuk was eligible and therefore he was deemed champion on Sunday.”

“Once we received information from the club stating that the athlete had not, in fact, met the criteria, the Committee met to discuss the situation, and Gary O’Hanlon has been deemed Marathon Champion”, he added.

“The process for confirming residency eligibility for National Championships has, up to this event, worked well, but the fact that Gary was not awarded this title and his gold medal on Sunday is very regrettable”, Cronin said.  “We do, however, look forward to presenting Gary with his Championship title and medal shortly,” he added.

European Selection Opportunities at Dublin Marathon

The first Irish male and female at the SSE Airtricity Dublin marathon will have the chance to gain selection for the European Athletics Championships Marathon Team Cup in Berlin next August.

The Dublin Marathon’s Marathon Mission has been supporting Ireland’s leading marathon runners for quite some time to assist in developing the event. It is something that Athletics Ireland supports and is keen to recognise.

As a result High Performance Director Paul McNamara has included the race as an avenue for selection for the European Athletics Championships Marathon Team Cup in Berlin next August.

“To acknowledge the support of Marathon Mission to the development of elite marathoning in Ireland, we have included an avenue for selection via the National Marathon Championships, held in conjunction with the Dublin Marathon,” said McNamara.  “We have scope to do this in this instance given the latitude afforded to us by having as many 6 spots to fill.”

The first finishing eligible athlete, male and female, will be selected once they have achieved the 2017 Dublin Marathon performance standard of 2:18:00 (men) and 2:39:00 (women) or half marathon standard (65:00/75:00) at any time during the qualification period on, at least, one occasion.
