This Week: Mini-Marathon, Last Evening Road Race & Juvenile Cross-Country

Sunday sees Cork Athletics Flagship Fundraiser, the 36th annual Evening Echo Women's mini-Marathon, while Thursday night, Duhallow AC hold the final evening road race of the year. Then, on Saturday morning, North Cork hold their open Juvenile Cross-Country meet.

NB: Stewards are urgently required for Sunday's Mini-Marathon. Each registered club is asked to provide four (4) stewards for the event. Stewards meet at 12 noon, on Sunday 24th, at the City end of Kennedy Park, on Monaghan Road

This is a *MAJOR* Fundraiser for Cork Athletics, so please help. Cork Athletics Cross-Country events cost the Board over €15,000 each year, so without this event, Cork Athletics activities would be very significantly curtailed and entry fees would be far higher. So....Be There - I Will!

Cork Athletics Call for Volunteer Stewards - September 2017

Volunteer Stewards Needed for Evening Echo Women's Mini-Marathon

Centre Park Road, Cork

12 noon, Sunday September 24th 2017
Race starts at 1pm

34207438 race marshal

This month sees two major events in the Cork Athletics calendar.  These are key fundraising events both for Cork Athletics, and also for it's member clubs.

The Evening Echo Womens Mini-Marathon is organised and hosted by Cork Athletics, and sponsored by Cork's Evening Echo, for the 36th year. The proceeds help Cork Athletics fund its competitions and Championships. In addition it enables the Board to organise training, in coaching, coach education, child protection and safety, along with grants for athletics related equipment.  The Board also organises transport and accomodation for representative Cork teams.

The Vhi A Lust For Life Cork Airport 5k is organised and hosted by Cork Athletics, with the assistance of Cork athletics clubs, on behalf of Athletics Ireland and the Irish Independent.  A portion of the entry fee is donated to the Cork City Hospitals Children's Club.  Cork Athletics receives a fee for organising and hosting the event, and the clubs providing stewards for the event also receive funding. The funds received, both by Cork Athletics and it's member clubs, are ploughed back into athletics in Cork.

Cork Athletics is a not-for-profit voluntary organisation. The Officers, Committee members and others who help to run the business of the Board are all volunteers, who give their time and expertise, free of charge, for the benefit of the athletes and the sport.

Cork Athletics is a designated Sports Body, Registered GS Number 3014 - Cork County Board (Athletics Association of Ireland) - under Section 235 Taxes Consolidation Act, 1997

Listings

On Tuesday last, Athletics Ireland released the initial listing of entries in the National Marathon Championship, with a 'final' list issued today, Friday September 29th.  The listings were supplied by Dublin BHAA, organisers of the Dublin City Marathon, and were drawn from the online entries inputted by competitors. Unfortunately these entries were strewn with errors: Many entrants omitted to select their club from the dropdown list, others selected the wrong club from the listing. Consequently it is vital that all athletes, and clubs, check the listings, to ensure that all their members are included, and, where there are errors or omissions, notify This email address is being protected from spambots. If you have entered the Dublin Marathon, and your name does not appear on the National Marathon Championships List, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or you may not be included in the National Championships Results.

Team and Individual Declaration

The list is, in itself, of little consequience.  Each team, and individual *MUST* be separately declared for the Championships. Once declared all entries will be checked for current Athletics ireland registration.  Only registered athletes will be eligible for the Championship.

A partial check of the Cork listings suggest that almost 50% of those on the list are unregistered, so get the skates on everyone!.....register your athletes

 Individual Championship Entries

Note:  New List published Sat Sept 30th

This listing was compiled, by Athletics Ireland, from entry data submitted by individual athletes. As stated earlier a significant number of those on the Cork listing are NOT registered Athletics Ireland athletes.  Even though your name may be on this list, you will *NOT* be included in the Championship if you remain unregistered. In the case of one club, none of their listed athletes are registered at present. Don't be disappointed - register your athletes!

bandon striders national track and field league final 2017

Combined Bandon AC and Bandon Striders Teams

Based on Report by Pat McSweeney, Bandon AC

At Athletics Ireland National T&F League Finals, held in Tullamore last month, Cork county was represented by Bandon AC in the women's Premier Division, while, in the Men's 1st Division, a composite mens team of Bandon AC and Abbey Striders AC members took part.

Bandon Striders put in a great performance over the day, taking the Silver medals, in the Mens First Division, and, in the process gained promotion to the Mens Premier Division for next year.

Top performances included wins in the Shot Put and Hammer by Patrick McSweeney, and a win in the Long Jump by Shane Howard, who also placed second in the triple jump. Ben ODonovan who was joint first in the High Jump, while Colin Kingston came second in the Discus. Dave Heath placed second in the Weight for Distance, with Naoise Ó Flaitheartaigh coming second in the 5,000m.  The 4x100m relay team also came second.  Bandon Striders point tally came to 101, four ahead of Carlow club, St. Laurence O'Toole AC. Wexford County won on 110 points.

Bandon AC's team faced tough competition in the Womens Premier Division. Their task was compounded by the unavailability of several athletes - Phil Healy, for example, was away on Irish University International duty, at the Universiade, in Taiwan. Further injuries on the day didn't help. Bandon's women were in contention for most of the day, but effort, injuries and the depleted squad took its toll, and the team eventually finished in fifth place on 77 points. St Abban's AC, from Laois, won with 117 points.

Top Bandon AC womens performances on the day included a win for Laura McSweeney in the Shot Put, while Laura also placed second in the Hammer.  Aoibhinn O'Connor took second place in the 400m Hurdles
