Endurance Running Courses - Survey January 2018

Survey to Assess Interest in Endurance Running Courses in Cork

endurance training

Endurance Running Course Survey

This is a new approach for Cork Athletics that, we hope, will enable delivery of courses in locations and at times that best suit the participants. The purpose of this survey is to asses the level of interest in Endurance Running courses. Depending on the responses to the questionnaire, Cork Athletics and Athletics Ireland will consider organising courses in various locations around the county, and also at times of the year that best suit.

Clubs can group together to provide the numbers required as the basis for holding a course in their own locality.  The course is open to all-comers, not just Athletics Ireland members, so members of, for example, Triathlon clubs, or indeed, those who aren'tamember of any organisation, can attend.  The Minimum numbers for a course is fifteen (15) people, while the maximum is asomewhat flexible, between 25 and 30.

The aim of the Endurance Running course is to give some basic knowledge/skills to the endurance coach to help assist in the delivery of coaching sessions to young athletes/Fit4Life groups/Road Runners etc. It is an introduction to some key endurance principles.

NB: Since this Survey was first published, an Endurance Running Course has been announced for Saturday March 3rd, in Dougas, Cork

Athletics Leader Course in Conna - January 2018

St Catherine's AC Host Successful Athletics Leader Course

Conna, Co. Cork

Some of the attendees at Saturday's Athletics Leader Course in Conna

A highly successful Athletics Leader course was hosted by St Catherine's AC, in Conna, last Saturday. Host club St Catherine's AC had over sixteen (16) club members attending the course, which is definitely a great boost for both the club and area going forward!  The course was requested by St Catherine's AC who formed both the driving force behind the course, and also the nucleus of the attendance, which was supplemented by members of St Nicholas Ac and Grange-Fermoy AC.

Frank Lynch, who delivered the course, said the attendees were "a fantastic and a very enthusiastic bunch!"

It is great to see another Coach Education course being held out the regular CIT venue, particularly following so soon from the Athletics Leader course held in Bantry last November.  Clearly there is demand from clubs both for this course and also to hold them in locations 'close to home'.  If your club is interested in holding a one-day Athletics Leader Coach Education course, please contact Athletics Ireland's Regional Development Officer, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., phone 0858060440

The Athletics Leader course can be held in any location with a hall or gym, or other suitable venue. If you club is interested in a course but cannot muster enough numbers, other clubs can be included.

Joan placed second, behind France's Carolle Zahi, who was a clear winner, in 7.15 sec. Ireland's European Youth 100m Champion, Gina Akpe-Moses, finished in 6th place, in 7.50, in this elite race.

Running in his first ever indoor race, Youghal AC athlete Fearghal Curtin knocked almost 10 seconds off of his previous best time, when finishing a very close third, in the 3000m, at the Commodore Invitational, in Nashville, Tennessee, on Saturday night, January 13th 2018.

The former Midleton CBS student, in his first year at Charleston Southern University, in South Carolina, clocked a time of 8:17.06 to claim third place behind two Kenyans, Kigen Chemadi (7:58.46), and Jacob Chloe (8:16.49), both students at Middle Tennessee State. While Chemadi finished well ahead of the field, Fearghal was only a hair's-breadth behind the runner-up, Jacob Chloe, just 0.17 sec behind.

Curtin's previous best was 8:26.00, which he ran at the Le Cheile International, in Leixlip, in July 2016.

Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month - December 2017

Just last Thursday, January 11th, Fearghal received the Cork City Sports Cork Athlete of the Month Award for December, for his outstanding performance at the European Junior Cross-Country Championships, in Slovakia, last month. The award was presented at a function in the River Lee Hotel, Cork, on Thursday January 11th 2012. As Fearghal is studying, on athletics scholarship, in the United States, the award was accepted by Fearghal's parents, Geraldine and Noel Curtin

Nearly 4000 miles and the Atlantic Ocean did not stop Fearghal Curtin from becoming a Buccaneer and representing CSU in cross country. The strong-minded freshman, known as "the machine" on the team, started running when he was only 8 years old and has represented his home country of Ireland seven times, in both track & field and cross country.

The 2018 Cork City Marathon was launched today, Monday January 22nd, with the event set for Sunday June 3rd.

Holding the event on a Sunday has brought many new challenges to the organisers, but the change has brought new growth to the popular series, which includes the Cork City Marathon, and Cork City Marathon Relay, along with the growing popularity of the Cork City Half-Marathon.

The 2018 Marathon and Half-Marathon Routes have yet to be fully finalised, however they will remain largely the same as in 2017. Several route changes/'tweaks' are being looked at, the most significant being the merge point of the Marathon and Half-Marathon. New roads/paths around Pairc Ui Caoimh have opened up new possibilities to streamline the merge point, making the transition easier for both participants and stewards.

Cork City Marathon Launch

cork city marathon 2018 launch 3

Speaking at the launch of the Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon, Race Director Jim O’Donovan said, “There is always great anticipation and buzz surrounding the launch of the Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon.  Moving race day from Monday to Sunday has proved to be a huge success, allowing greater flexibility for visitors, both nationally and internationally, traveling to the event.

This change also allowed all participants an opportunity to celebrate their great achievement in the city that evening. This development was very well-received by all participants, many of whom have already registered for this year's event.

“This must-attend event in the Irish sporting calendar is not all about winning. It’s the taking part that counts. The process of training for a marathon provides a focal point and platform through which you can achieve a myriad of goals. The Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon has become more than a marathon and is recognised for its inclusivity. It’s for runners, walkers, wheelchair athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and supporters. It is also for those looking for a way to get fit, to set a new personal best, a way to raise money for a local charity or a fun day out with family and friends.

“To those who have always wished to have an Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon medal hanging around their neck but are apprehensive, they can make the distance in the category they have set as their own personal goal, I have just one important message for you – you can!

We are so proud of this special event we have created, which provides a competitive platform for elite athletes, but is just as welcoming and accessible for recreational runners. You are never alone on the course, with stewards, spectators and fellow athletes all supporting and willing you on to the finish line. So, I would encourage everyone to take the leap, and create that special memory that will be forever with you,”

Now in its 12th year, the Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon is an internationally recognised marathon welcoming participants from home and abroad, with certification from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).  As an AIMS (Association of International Marathons) certified course, the Cork City Marathon is a qualifying event for other prestigious marathons, such as the Boston City Marathon.

The Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon is a City Council promoted event, in partnership with Cork Athletics, Cork Business Houses Athletics Association (BHAA), An Garda Síochána, Cork Education & Training Board, along with Voluntary First Aid & Medical bodies such as St. John Ambulance, Irish Red Cross, Order of Malta, Cork Fire Services and Civil Defence as well as local groups and communities.

Cllr. Tony Fitzgerald, Lord Mayor of Cork, said “Marathon Sunday is one of my favourite days of the year, as I see the city come alive. I would encourage individuals of all ages, levels and abilities to get involved in the 2018 Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon. It will be a fantastic day in the city, and a great way for participants to take in the iconic Cork sights and sounds as they take to the streets. We’re calling on everyone, from first timers to professional athletes, to lace up your trainers and look forward to seeing you at the start and finish line!”

About the Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon

The Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon was revived in 2007, after a break of 21 years. It reflected a growing interest or a rekindling of interest in road running that had peaked in the mid-1980s, but had waned in the intervening years.

cork city marathon 2018 launch 7

One of the innovations in the Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon was the inclusion of a Team Relay challenge, with teams of between 2 and five members combining to cover the 26.2 mile distance. In 2013, a Youth Team Relay was introduced, providing an opportunity for young people between the ages of 16 and 18 to participate in what is one of the most challenging and rewarding sporting and personal achievements.

Beara AC's membership fee for the year, Jan-Dec 2018, is €50, with €25 for concessions. Membership includes insurance and Athletics Ireland Membership and Registration, and weekly training opportunities.

The club is only registering adult members currently, however the intention is to extend membership to juveniles, once the adult section is up and running.

Whilst the club is only, officially at least, starting up now, it has been working away quietly, getting ready for the January launch. The fledgling club actually formed both the nucleus and the basis for the first ever Athletics Ireland Assistant Coach course, in Cork, to be held outside of CIT Track, when the Assistant Coach Course was held in Bantry, last November. Clearly an indication of the progressive approach of the club.

Running in the Beara Penninsula

In the last few years, there has been an upsurgance in Athletics in the Beara Penninsula, with Parkruns on Bere Island, and in Glengarriff, along with road races in Eyeries, Allihies and Castletownbere, and, of course the highly popular Bere Island Mid-Summer 5k & 10k, all of which have attracted significant number of competitors. With the advent of the new club, it is planned to form a series involving these races. It must be mentioned also that today's recruitment venue, SuperValu Castletownbere, has been a significant sponsor of many of these races.

Exiting times for athletics in Beara!  Best of luck to the new club!

John Walshe, one of the key people behind the Ballycotton organisation recalls Jim Dingwall's win in the 1985 race, the eight edition of the race. Sadly, the 2017 edition, the 40th running, was the final Ballycotton 10.

BLAST FROM THE PAST – BALLYCOTTON ‘10’ 1985

Based on a Guest Article by John Walshe

The photo above - courtesy of Pat Moore, formerly of Nike – was taken by Fr Liam Kelleher, and shows the top eight finishers from the Ballycotton ‘10’ of 1985.

The winner was Jim Dingwall, City of Hull AC, in a time of 48:05. Tragically, 20 years after his victory, the Scottish international, who had a Marathon best of 2:11:44, died at age 56, after a long battle with cancer.

All of the first eight finishers were inside 50 minutes, and finished in the same order as in the photo (left to right): Jim Dingwall, City of Hull AC, 1st, 48:05; Dick Hooper, Raheny Shamrock AC, 2nd, 48:16; Robert Costelloe, Burgerland Limerick AC, 3rd, 48:36; John Lenihan, An Riocht AC, 4th, 49:07; Liam O’Brien, Midleton AC, 5th, 49:23; Noel Harvey, Clonliffe Harriers AC, 6th, 49:56; Peter Maher, North Cork AC, 7th, 49:57; Tony Ryan, Dungarvan AC, 8th, 49:58.
