Niamh McCarthy Throws 31.76m for Discus Gold
Niamh McCarthy took F41 discus gold, when she decimated the field at the World Para Athletics European Championships in Berlin.
Silver-medallist from the Rio Paralympics smashed the European record at the Rieti Grand Prix in Italy, last May, an indication of her intentions for these championships.
She broke her own European record with her fifth throw, 31:05m, however she bettered that with her final throw, to take the Title, record and Gold medal, throwing 31.76m. Her final throw was a massive ten metres better than second-placed Pole Renata Sliwinska.
24 year old Niamh was the final Irish, and third Cork, athlete in these Championships, which delivered an outstanding haul of nine medals for Ireland.
Jason Smyth (two golds), Noelle Lenihan (gold), Orla Barry (gold), Greta Streimikyte (gold), Orla Comerford (two bronzes) and Jordan Lee (bronze) were the other Irish medallists.
