Combined Bandon AC and Bandon Striders Teams

Based on Report by Pat McSweeney, Bandon AC

At Athletics Ireland National T&F League Finals, held in Tullamore last month, Cork county was represented by Bandon AC in the women's Premier Division, while, in the Men's 1st Division, a composite mens team of Bandon AC and Abbey Striders AC members took part.

Bandon Striders put in a great performance over the day, taking the Silver medals, in the Mens First Division, and, in the process gained promotion to the Mens Premier Division for next year.

Top performances included wins in the Shot Put and Hammer by Patrick McSweeney, and a win in the Long Jump by Shane Howard, who also placed second in the triple jump. Ben ODonovan who was joint first in the High Jump, while Colin Kingston came second in the Discus. Dave Heath placed second in the Weight for Distance, with Naoise Ó Flaitheartaigh coming second in the 5,000m.  The 4x100m relay team also came second.  Bandon Striders point tally came to 101, four ahead of Carlow club, St. Laurence O'Toole AC. Wexford County won on 110 points.

Bandon AC's team faced tough competition in the Womens Premier Division. Their task was compounded by the unavailability of several athletes - Phil Healy, for example, was away on Irish University International duty, at the Universiade, in Taiwan. Further injuries on the day didn't help. Bandon's women were in contention for most of the day, but effort, injuries and the depleted squad took its toll, and the team eventually finished in fifth place on 77 points. St Abban's AC, from Laois, won with 117 points.

Top Bandon AC womens performances on the day included a win for Laura McSweeney in the Shot Put, while Laura also placed second in the Hammer.  Aoibhinn O'Connor took second place in the 400m Hurdles
