Anne Marie McGlynn, Letterkenny AC, Kevin Seaward, St Malachy's AC and Hugh Armstrong, Ballina AC |
Originally scheduled for last March, the event was postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic and will now be the only European or World Championship event to go ahead in 2020. The original coursee comprised a single 13.1 Mile lap, while the final course consists of four 5.5 km laps.
World Athletics have developed comprehensive Covid-19 Safety protocols to enable the event to go ahead, and Athletics Ireland has drawn up its own Covid-19 policy for Team Ireland travelling to International Competitions, based on Sport Ireland and World Athletics protocols, and the Irish squad will be subject to further testing, monitoring and restricted movement protocols when they return to Ireland
A final entry of 157 men and 126 women, from 62 countries has been received, however this will be hit by withdrawals, such as Canada, who withdrew their squad in recent days, due to fears around the rising Covid figures in Poland.

As everyone will be aware, the Government has declared that the entire country is now at Covid Level 3. Consequently Cork Athletics County Board has decided, at a virtual meeting, held this evening, to postpone next Sundays cross-country meet, which was scheduled to take place at the Board's Riverstick grounds.
The meet, which was to comprise of Juvenile Under-10 and Under-12 ages, along with the County Junior and Senior Championships, will now be rescheduled.
It is planned to consult with the clubs about resumption. The parallel rescheduling of Munster and National events will be a facor in the rescheduling
Slieveroe, Riverstick
Sunday October 4th 2020
Essential Information - Please Read!
BEFORE traveling EVERY person entering the Riverstick grounds MUST complete either the Online, or PDF version of the Covid-19 Screening Form
Online Covid-19 Health Screening Form
The online form will remain live from 6am Saturday, until 9am on Sunday
Covid-19 Health Screening Form - PDF Version
If you are using the PDF verion, you must bring it with you and drop it in a collection box when entering the Riverstick grounds.
Only athletes who have been entered, a Parent/Guardian (One Only!), 1 club coordinator [for JUVENILE events ONLY] (per race), Officials, and support personnel (medical/timing/etc) personnel may attend.
As numbers onsite are limited to 200, the following measures are necessary:
There will be NO Late Entries
Athletes who are entered, but who are not running, should NOT attend, and if they do, they will be told to leave the venue
Coaches, unless acting as club coordinator, should not attend
You should plan to arrive no earlier than the time listed in the schedule below. If you arrive before time, you will be directed past the grounds, as queuing outside, on the Riverstick-Carrigaline road, is NOT permitted
Cars should be parked facing toward the field - drive into the spot - do not reverse in. After the race, you will then drive out directly.
Parents/Guardians should remain in their cars throughout - races will start at the top of the field, in front of the parking area, with the finish also close by.
Each club has been asked to nominate separate coordinators for each Juvenile race. The coordinators will collect that club's Juvenile athletes and bring them to the start line, when called to do so over the Public Address. They will then collect the Juveniles after the race and escort them back to their Parent/Guardian.
Please leave the site as soon as possible after your race - The site MUST be cleared before the next race.
There will be NO medal presentations on the day. All medals will be posted to the clubs at a later date

The September Cork City athlete of the month award goes to Nicola Tuthill, Bandon AC.
Nicola was the dominant force in the women's hammer event at the National Junior Championships, in Santry, on September 5th. Her throw of 57.19m was almost 9 meters clear of her nearest rival.
Three weeks earlier, Nicola became only the sixth Irish woman to pass the magical 60m mark, when winning the National senior title. And all of this at the tender age of 16!

These comments and analysis do not necessarily reflect the views of Cork Athletics County Board
The past few weeks have seen a cautious return to competitive athletics in Cork, with Track and Field, and Cross-Country Meets, along with a few road races, and a few more to come. These have provided valuable lessons in how to proceed with events in these 'strange' times.
Fundamentally, organising the basics has changed little, however, as organisers, we are duty bound to ensure that everyone - participants, officials and support personnel, and the general public - are all protected, and not put at risk due to our negligence or oversight. Equally, we all must protect our own close contacts. Covid numbers are rising again, but we (the country) is moving tentatively towards finding a way of doing things 'normally' - living with the virus - for the foreseeable future. As such, it looks like it will be a quite while yet before we will again be able to hold events freely and without Covid worries.
Today's Government update was awaited with mixed feelings. There were media expectations that the limit on numbers attending outdoor events might be raised to 500, and, some suggested, even 5,000 for Stadiums. Such numbers would both help satisfy the thirst for competition, but also bring a lot of hard work for organisers, due to magnified Covid prevention/control requirements.
In the event, the limit has only been increased to 200 spectators - at that applies only to accredited stadiums, while,. for other venues, the limit is 100 spectators. Nevertheless this increase, while limited, will be helpful when determining the capacity and meet schedule for the forthcoming Cork County Cross-Country Championships, due to be held over three Sundays in October, at Cork Athletics' Riverstick Grounds.
The County Cross-Country Championships are due to be discussed in the coming days, at a County Board Officers meeting, held virtually.
Further details of the Championships, along with Entry Forms, will be posted on the Cork Athletics website and social media, as soon as approved and available.
Now that events are going ahead again, clubs should get their completed permit application forms in to County Secretary, Anne Murray, as soon as possible.

Sanctioned by IIA*, and held in an exclusive zone, and only attended by people who are immune to Coronovirus, the race treated the Cork public to a sight that they probably haven't seen since March.
With, some forty or so athletes, officials, coaches and pace bikes, the public was treated to a sporting spectacle they thought had vanished. As the lead group came by the Victoria Road roundabout, a masked female bus passenger could be seen, literally 'bug eyed', watching the event as the group passed, literally inches away.
There were added benefits accruing from their virus-immunity, with everyone being exempt, not just from being restricted to pods with a maximum of 15, but also intercounty travel, with some athletes coming from outside Cork. The benefits of immunity didn't end there either, with some people, who are close contacts of front-line health workers, being able to attend.
Start of last Saturday's 10k
The foregoing report might be somewhat funny, if we weren't in such a critical situation wrt Covid-19. Right now, it is both bizarre and very sad- simply beyond comprehension, that this actually went ahead.
Corona virus levels are increasing in Cork at a worrying rate. As of this evening, the 14 day incidence rate in Cork has reached 199.1 - exceeding Dublin's 180.9 - remember the clamour in recent weeks for Dublin to go to Level 4 or even 5! ...and now we're ahead of Dublin.
The whole country is in Level 3. NPHET recommended going to Level 5. Last Tuesday, October 6th, Athletics Ireland released updated guidance for Level 3, decreeing No Competition to take place, outdoor activities to take place in pods of 15 max, with no intercounty travel.
No Competition is permitted at this time, consequently Athletic Ireland insurance for is suspended for competition.
[Internal club Time Trials may be permitted, however, at any stage, - pre, during and post-Covid - mixed/inter-club events MUST have an Athletics Ireland Event Permit]
This pandemic won't be overcome by Government/NPHET/WHO/AAI decrees and/or guidance. In the absence of a vaccine, it will be US - each and every individual - who, by taking personal responsibility and by our own actions, help to defeat Covid-19.
Organising events like this, in contravention of ALL guidance, does little for the image of our sport - if we have an outbreak in such a setting, it will be very, very damaging. We have seen recently what has happened in other sports - and some of them have 'pulled the plug' on their activities as a result.
Last week the Irish Times reported on opposition to an upcoming, behind closed doors, event in Mondello Park. Last month, a road race in Wexford was cancelled, due to local opposition, and similar opposition was felt with an event which was due to be held in Cork.
Padraig O'Morain, in today's Irish Times, said "The people I'm castigating here.....are not bad people; they are just people seduced by the age-old belief that "it won't happen to me".
But it could. And even if you're lucky and it feels like no more than a bad cold., the virus you passed on could take a life down the line.
Looked at that way, community responsibility isn't boring - it's exciting and necessary"
Having already lost our Track & Field season, we are battling to save our Cross-Country season ....and it's not just about keeping our sport together....we need to ensure that businesses can stay open and that customers can go to those businesses.
Everyone needs to do their bit in quelling this virus - please make sure that YOUR bit counts!
Following yesterday's Government declaration of a nationwide Level 3, many members contacted County Board Officers enquiring about next Sunday's meet, in particular.
Cork County Board Officers will hold a virtual meeting tomorrow, Wednesday October 7th.
Earlier today, Athletics Ireland released a Covid 19 update, stating "No competition/events." Following this release there has been contact between Cork Athletics and Athletics Ireland, who have advised that further updates are expected from Sport Ireland, and that Athletics Ireland Board are to meet on the matter.
The status of next Sunday's, and subsequent meets will be posted on Cork Athletics website and social media, following tomorrow night's meeting

HSE/Government Covid Guidelines mean that there are significant Restrictions on the total number of people on site. As a result the County Board must implement specific measures , for this year only, to control access to the Cross-Country venue, and the way the event is conducted.
Day 1, Sunday October 4th, will set the standard to see if Cork Athletics County Board can manage to host the three subsequent Cross-Country Championship meets. A lot will depend on the behaviour of everyone attending the event, in terms of Covid compliance, and adherence to County Board conditions for the meet. Everyone must take personal responsibility for their own behaviour, and that of those they are responsible for, and do everything that they can to make the event safe for everyone present.
These guidelines/conditions were drafted while Cork was in Covid Level 2, and are subject to change or additions at very short notice
"Cork Athletics County Board Officers have met virtualy several times to compile a workable programme for hosting this year's Championships. The Programme outlined below is a very challenging one for all of us. It is clear that we are limited to a maximum number of attendees, comprising of competitors, parents or guardians, officials and support personnel.
Consequently it has been decided that juveniles will be confined to their own age, otherwise, even with the conditions outlined here, the overall numbers on site cannot be managed within Government guidelines.
To avoid close contact in the finish area, and remove the necessity for a finishing chute, chip numbers will be used for all races this year. As Chip Numbers are required, entries must be submitted no later than ten (10) days before the event. Consequently late entries CANNOT be facilitated"

Every participant MUST be currently registered Athletics Ireland members.
Due to restrictions on overall numbers on site, Juvenile's are, for this year only, strictly confined to their own age group - Juveniles may only compete in their own age group, i.e. Under-9's may run in Under-9 only, Under -10's in Under-10 only, Under-11's in Under-11 only, etc. No Juvenile athlete may move up an age.
Each and every person attending MUST complete a Covid-19 Declaration on the day and BEFORE travelling to the event. Any person who has NOT completed the form will NOT be admitted.
A Timetable, with admission times and start times, will be published as soon as compiled. This will include arrival times for EACH race. Athletes must NOT arrive at the grounds before the designated admission time - anyone arriving at the grounds in advance of their designated time will be directed on past the grounds. Queueing of cars on the roadway outside is not permitted.
A Juvenile athlete may be permitted to bring one (1) parent/guardian/coach. If an athlete arrives with more than one parent/guardian/coach, only one will be admitted. Non competing siblings/friends will NOT be admitted. Numbers on site at any one time are strictly limited, under Government guidelines - every excess person reduces our capacity to hold the event. Due to Covid, This is NOT a family day out [we wish it were, as in other years, but, due to numbers on site, our hands are tied]
Each club must nominate a co-ordinator/delegate/official/coach to collect race numbers before each race.
There must be a Different official/coach/parent to look after each clubs athletes for each individual race, e.g. Under-14 Girls official will brings the club's athletes to the start line, and then brings them back to their cars after their race, and all must leave the venue immediately. The field will be cleared for the next race and a different official will then take charge of the Under-14 boys, and follow the same procedure as set out previously, and so on with next age group.
All parents/guardians must remain in their cars, behind the ropes at the perimeter of the car parking area - no access to field. Start and Finish areas will be visible from there.
Spectators
Due to Governments/HSE limit on numbers on site, No spectators will be admitted.
Chipped Numbers will be used for all races. There will be a wide finish line, with no finish chute, or recording of names – these will be recorded automatically as each athlete crosses the finish line. [Note – No times will be published for Juvenile races]
NO Number swaps are permitted. Numbers will be Colour coded, so it will be clear if someone is running in the wrong race. [Number swaps are NOT permitted as each number/Chip is unique to each individual athlete]
The grounds must be cleared of all, except meet organising personnel, immediately after each race. This is a critical measure, without which it will not be possible to complete the fixture, and will impact on the decision to continue with the subsequent meets. Athletes, parents and coaches MUST leave the grounds immediately after each race - This is to ensure that the next race can start on time.
Teams will consist of three (3) athletes to score, and one (1) sub.
Eligibility and Regulations for Senior Races can be found under Competition Bye-Laws
There will be NO MEDAL PRESENTATIONS at the event. All medals will be posted out at a later date
Warmup/Cooldown
Warmup/Cooldown is NOT permitted inside the grounds [There will be a SMALL (approx. 70m long) warm-up area, suitable for a BRIEF (approx. 5 minutes) warm-up by juveniles] - please warmup and cooldown at another location prior to arriving/after leaving the grounds. These measures are required to ensure that the Grounds are cleared between each race.

ISTAF 2020 Launch
Irish Trio at 79th ISTAF 2020 ; Michelle Finn, Ciara Mageean and Thomas Barr |
79th ISTAF, Berlin, 2pm, Sunday September 13th 2020
There is Cork and Irish interest in tomorrow's ISTAF, with Michelle Finn, Leevale AC, in the 3k Steeplechase, at 15:40pm (Irish time), Ciara Mageean in the 1500m, at 16:15pm and Thomas Barr in the 400mH, at 16:45pm. With Olympic Qualification open again since Sept 1st, and the quality fields, we are sure to see some exceptional events. The meet gets under way at 3pm Berlin time, an hour ahead of us here, so take an hour off the start times below:
Meet Schedule - 79th ISTAF
Michelle Finn will be chasing the 9:30 Olympic Steeplechase standard. She will need to improve on her 9:38.04 PB, set in Sydney last February - a time that still stands as 4th best in the world this year. Qualification would put her close to Roísín McGettigan's 2007 Irish Record of 9:28.29. The women's steeplechase is at 15:40 Irish time
Ciara Mageean runsin teh 1500m at 16:15pm, in a fabulous lineup. With so many stars in the field, hopefully it's be a 'bust up' rather than a tactical race, ensuring fast times. Muir is probably the one to beat, and Mageean has already beathen her this season, but there are plenty of other big names in the race. This will be interesting to watch!
ISTAF Women's 1500m Field
At 16:45pm, Thomas Barr goes head-to-head with Karsten Warlholm, in a star-studded field. Warholm is intent on attacking the world record, so, again, this is sure to be an exciting race.
ISTAF Men's 400mH Field
