The 2018 Cork City Marathon was launched today, Monday January 22nd, with the event set for Sunday June 3rd.

Holding the event on a Sunday has brought many new challenges to the organisers, but the change has brought new growth to the popular series, which includes the Cork City Marathon, and Cork City Marathon Relay, along with the growing popularity of the Cork City Half-Marathon.

The 2018 Marathon and Half-Marathon Routes have yet to be fully finalised, however they will remain largely the same as in 2017. Several route changes/'tweaks' are being looked at, the most significant being the merge point of the Marathon and Half-Marathon. New roads/paths around Pairc Ui Caoimh have opened up new possibilities to streamline the merge point, making the transition easier for both participants and stewards.

Speaking at the launch of the Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon, Race Director Jim O’Donovan said, “There is always great anticipation and buzz surrounding the launch of the Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon.  Moving race day from Monday to Sunday has proved to be a huge success, allowing greater flexibility for visitors, both nationally and internationally, traveling to the event.

This change also allowed all participants an opportunity to celebrate their great achievement in the city that evening. This development was very well-received by all participants, many of whom have already registered for this year's event.

“This must-attend event in the Irish sporting calendar is not all about winning. It’s the taking part that counts. The process of training for a marathon provides a focal point and platform through which you can achieve a myriad of goals. The Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon has become more than a marathon and is recognised for its inclusivity. It’s for runners, walkers, wheelchair athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and supporters. It is also for those looking for a way to get fit, to set a new personal best, a way to raise money for a local charity or a fun day out with family and friends.

“To those who have always wished to have an Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon medal hanging around their neck but are apprehensive, they can make the distance in the category they have set as their own personal goal, I have just one important message for you – you can!

We are so proud of this special event we have created, which provides a competitive platform for elite athletes, but is just as welcoming and accessible for recreational runners. You are never alone on the course, with stewards, spectators and fellow athletes all supporting and willing you on to the finish line. So, I would encourage everyone to take the leap, and create that special memory that will be forever with you,”

Now in its 12th year, the Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon is an internationally recognised marathon welcoming participants from home and abroad, with certification from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).  As an AIMS (Association of International Marathons) certified course, the Cork City Marathon is a qualifying event for other prestigious marathons, such as the Boston City Marathon.

The Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon is a City Council promoted event, in partnership with Cork Athletics, Cork Business Houses Athletics Association (BHAA), An Garda Síochána, Cork Education & Training Board, along with Voluntary First Aid & Medical bodies such as St. John Ambulance, Irish Red Cross, Order of Malta, Cork Fire Services and Civil Defence as well as local groups and communities.

Cllr. Tony Fitzgerald, Lord Mayor of Cork, said “Marathon Sunday is one of my favourite days of the year, as I see the city come alive. I would encourage individuals of all ages, levels and abilities to get involved in the 2018 Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon. It will be a fantastic day in the city, and a great way for participants to take in the iconic Cork sights and sounds as they take to the streets. We’re calling on everyone, from first timers to professional athletes, to lace up your trainers and look forward to seeing you at the start and finish line!”

About the Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon

The Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon was revived in 2007, after a break of 21 years. It reflected a growing interest or a rekindling of interest in road running that had peaked in the mid-1980s, but had waned in the intervening years.

One of the innovations in the Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon was the inclusion of a Team Relay challenge, with teams of between 2 and five members combining to cover the 26.2 mile distance. In 2013, a Youth Team Relay was introduced, providing an opportunity for young people between the ages of 16 and 18 to participate in what is one of the most challenging and rewarding sporting and personal achievements.
