sonia o sullivan national junior record 1987a

At the 1987 Cork City Sports, a young Sonia O’Sullivan set a National Junior Record of 9:01 in the 3000m. This performance put Sonia on the map, and launched the career of the greatest athlete Ireland has ever produced.

Thirty years on, this Junior Record still stands. Sonia is laying down a challenge to all clubs, for the 2017 Cork City Sports, to enter a team of girls to run a 3k relay, in an attempt to break the thirty-year-old 9:01 record.

The team must consist of five female athletes aged between 14 & 19 years of age (2013-2008), from the same club, who will each run 600m.  Clubs who may have difficulty fielding a team will be permitted to field guests, or to form and submit regional teams.
