SENIOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
The first Senior Cross-Country Championship organised by the National Athletic and Cycling Association was held on Saturday, over the Phoenix Park Course, which the proprietors kindly placed at the disposal of the Association for the event. The distance to be covered by the runners was nine miles, made up by nearly seven and a half laps of the course.
JJ Ryan, Kilfeacle AC, Tipperary - Irish Senior Cross-Country Champion 1924
Ryan ran out an easy winner in the excellent time of 53 mins. and 42 secs., Cork supplying the second man in D. Healy, 1 min. 12 secs behind, followed by G. Magan, nearly a minute later.
As was generally expected, the Cork A.C. furnished the winning team, but few would have credited them before the race with being able to produce such a convincing victory, it was anticipated also that the two Northern clubs would be the most dangerous rivals to the Southern team, and this, likewise, proved to be the case, the Ulsterville team being second and the North Belfast Harriers third.
It was a magnificent race from start to finish, though the issue, both for the first man home and for the winning team, was never in doubt after the first circuit of the course. J. J. Ryan. indeed, proved himself to be in a class of his own, and increased his lead steadily every lap, without apparently at any time extending himself. As far as the team results went, it looked right up to the commencement of the last lap that the Cork team would have an even more overwhelming advantage than finally proved to be the case. Actually, their scoring team of six finished in 2nd, 6th, 7th. 13th, 15th and 18th places, though, owing to the fact that two individual entries. G. Magan and W. McFerran, finished m third and fourth places, and were eliminated as far as team results were concerned, their total score was 60. Apart from the fine display of Cork, the Free State runners did not distinguish themselves in comparison with the Northern runners. Nine teams in all took part, and, with seven individual entries, the total number of starters was 93. The times and placing of the first ten were as under —
1, J. J. Ryan (Tipperrary Harriers A.C.). 52 mins 42 secs.; 2, D. Healy, (Cork A.C. Harriers). 53 mins and 54 secs.; 3, G. Magan (individual) 54 mins. 50 secs.; 4. W. McFerran (individual), 55 mins. 3 secs.; 5. J. M. Martin (Ulsterville Harriers) 55 min. 6 secs.; 6, J. Corcoran (Cork AC.). 55 mins. 13 secs.; 7. J. Manning (Cork A.C.). 55 mins. 14 secs.; 8. A. Gilmore (Ulsterville Harriers) 55 mins. 22 secs.; 9, H.T. Russell (Ulsterville Harriers). 55 mins. 26 secs.; 10. S. Ferris (Ulsterville Harriers). 55 mins. 30 secs
The following were the team results: 1, Cork A.C. Harriers 30 ; 2. Ulsterville Harriers and A.C., 92; 3. North Belfast Harriers. 117; 4 Tipperary A.C. Harriers 124 3. Roscommon A.C Harriers, 134; 6, Clonliffc Harriers. 220; 7. Donore Harriers. 329.
Individual entries were not counted in calculating the position of the finishing teams.
