European Athletics announced on Friday 2nd November that Fingal, County Dublin, Ireland will host the European Cross Country Championships in December 2020.

Dublin previously staged a very successful SPAR European Cross Country Championships in 2009

 

The venue for the 2020 European Cross Country Championships will be the National Sports Centre Campus in Blanchardstown. (The 2009 championships were staged in Santry Demesne)

 

Presenting the Athletics Ireland bid – which was supported by Fingal County Council, Sport Ireland and Irish state broadcasters RTE – at the European Athletics offices in Lausanne were:  Athletics Ireland President Georgina Drumm, Athletics Ireland CEO Hamish Adams, LOC Chair and Bid Coordinator Liam Hennessy, Fingal County Council Senior Executive Officer Mary Godwin, LOC Chair of Competition and Deputy President John Cronin and LOC Marketing and Promotion Manager Claire Shannon

 

Athletics Ireland CEO Hamish Adams said: ‘We are delighted to have secured the hosting of the SPAR European Cross Country Championships for 2020. We look forward to working with Fingal County Council, Sport Ireland and RTE to ensure the event is a world class experience for both athletes and spectators.’

 

Fingal County Council Senior Executive Officer Mary Godwin added: “We look forward to working closely with Athletics Ireland and the other partners to ensure we host the best European Cross Country Championships to date."

 

European Athletics are also happy to announce that the 2021 European Athletics U20 Championships has been awarded to the Estonian capital Tallinn

 

Representing the bid in Lausanne were Estonian Athletic Association President and General Secretary Erich Teigamagi and Sirje Lippe, and Deputy Head of the Tallinn Youth and Sports Department Ain Kiv, from the city of Tallinn

 

Tallinn was the host of the 2011 European Athletics U20 Championships and the 2015 European Athletics U23 Championships

Athletics Ireland today (November 2nd) secured the hosting of the European Cross Country Championships for the second time. Members of the bid committee presented to the European Athletics Council in Budapest

 

The European Cross Country Championships will take place at the National Sports Campus on Sunday 13th December 2020. Athletics Ireland bid for this championship was supported by Fingal County Council, Sport Ireland and RTE

About Us

Cork Athletics County Board is a constituent member of Athletics Ireland. Cork Athletics is the governing body, administering athletics, track and field (T&F), cross-country (XC) and running in county Cork. The Board comprises elected representatives of constituent athletic clubs and running clubs. Cork County Board AAI organises Championship races and competition, including road, track & field (T&F) and Cross-country (XC), at junior, juvenile, senior and masters levels, and selects representation for the county. In addition, training and education is provided for coaches and officials. The Board also regulates the Athletics Ireland race/event permit (licence) process for county Cork.
