There is little doubt that the changing of the Charlevilie Festival Race from 10 miles to 10km. enhanced the quality and increased the numbers taking part in the race.
Shortly after 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 1 5th 200 participants took their place on the starting line. With the holder John Lenihan and Robert Costello in the field it was certain that the race was going to be a cracker and what a cracker it turned out to be.
After the initial rush at the start the big 2 took over and set a scorching gallop Costello showed in front at the mile mark in a blistering 4 min. 25 secs, and still there was no let up, the Limerick man increased his advantage over the second mile and maintained it right to the end to come home a veryt worthy and imporessive winner in a really class time of 28:33 secs, for the 6.2 mile trip, and that was 12 secs, ahead of the very game Linehan.
Top 9 Men - Charleville 10k 1985
Richard Clifford was 3rd and the evergreen John Buckley 4th then the first 2, club athletes Peter Maher and Garret Barry came home in 5th and 6th.
It was obvious that there was going to be a rare old battle for team honours between Limerick and North Cork. When the results were compiled they showed North Cork clear winners, but there had been a mix-up about the Limerick entries some put down Burgerland and some put down just Limerick. A subsequent check revealed that both clubs had the same total of 45 points.
North Cork by virtue of the fact that the last scorer in 19th place Geoffrey Sheehan was ahead of Limerick's last scorer Henry Downes, Dan O'Keeffe and the 3rd scoring man in 15th place.
John Downes came in ahead of Geoffrey Sheehan for the Junior prize, while there was mild surprise in the Ladies' Race when leader, Sheila Curtin was pegged back by Josephine Hegarty of Riocht who came home a most impressive winner, so Sheila's 5 streak winning run including her Cork Marathon win has come to an end.
Top 10 Women - Charleville 10k 1985
Mention must be made of the fact of what she did for the race, with her sister Maura, and Maura Sheehan, they collected some beautiful prizes from the traders in Charlevilie and everybody was loud in their praise for the quality of prizes and that is due in no small measure to the response in Charlevilie together with the help from the festival.
It was the first time we really looked for prizes for a club promotion, and we must say a sincere thank you to all the people of Charlevilie and district. Sheila Curtin's high placing helped the club to 2nd team. How they got there remains a mystery to me, with Sheila being the only Senior in the starting line, but, going through the results, I noticed the names of some very young athletes, fair enough if they enjoy running but from my experience I am against anyone under 15 running on the road, it is too hard for them at an age when they are still growing and irreparable damage could be done to their tender limbs.
