Report in this week's Southern Star on Olympic Champion Paul O'Donovan's Cross-Country Exploits

It's not often that an Olympic Champion takes part in our Cross-Country Championships, so there was 'fierce excitement' when Olympic Rowing Champion, Paul O'Donovan, turned up, in Leevale Colours, for last Sunday's Men's County Novice Cross-Country Championship. Changing codes from watersports to the muckier side, Paul gave excellent account of himself, finishing 16th overall, in 22:47, just 11 secs behind Leevale's fourth scoring team member, and less than two minutes off the individual medal places.

No doubt Paul worked hard, but he also spurred on many in the field, with many saying afterwards that they were galvanised to run well to try to take an Olympic Champion's scalp ......Some succeeded...many didn't. One team manager remarked afterwards that he'd never seen his man move so fast, when he saw him in a sprint finish with Paul.

Everyone enjoyed the day, in spite of some pretty nasty showers/squalls, but it's fair to say that Paul O'Donovan's presence raised everyone's sense of occasion and enjoyment!
