Nike Cork City Half Marathon

"NEIL CUSACK showed some of the great ability, which a decade ago saw him coast to a 2:13:39 performance in the Dublin Marathon, when he beat a strong field, to win this very impressive Cork City event.

The Nike-sponsored Cork City Half Marathon signalled the return of big time road racing to the southern capital, as a field of over 500 runners lined up for this St. Finbarr’s AC promotion.

A group of six runners cut out the early pace, as the leaders passed the first mile in 4:58. At this point, the group was made up of Ricky Burke (St. Finbarr's), Leonard O'Regan (Leevale), Johnny Bolger(Limerick AC), Eamon Murphy (St. Finbarr’s) and Tony O'Halloran (DCH).

By five miles, the race was down to three runners, Cusack, O’Halloran and Bolger, and, by the 6 mile mark, there were just two in contention, as O'Halloran was forced to concede ground to the Limerick pair.

Cusack went clear after nine miles, and, over the final miles, gave an impressive display of controlled front running, reminiscent of his glory days of 1974 and '82, when he won both the Boston and Dublin Marathons. This was vintage Cusack, and his winning performance in 65:02 suggests that the 38 year old Limerick runner will be a force to be reckoned with in Dublin, in October.

Johnny Bolger, now working in Shannon, and recently joined up with Limerick AC, also ran well, to take second, just over half a minute behind Cusack. Tony O’Halloran finished third.

Michael Roche of Dungarvan gave notice that he will be the veteran to beat in Dublin, when he won the men's 0/40 race in 1:10:32. Frank Cashman of East Cork finished second, and one of Cork’s all time great club runners, Richie Crowley (St. Finbarr's), finished third. John Buckley, who had been heavily involved in the promotion and organisation of the event, won the 0/45 veterans event.

Ursula Noctor showed great form when winning the women's race, in 1:14:41, after leading from an early stage. The DCH runner had just recently returned from a three week training stint at altitude, in the Pyrenees, and she had the added satisfaction of setting a PB for 10 miles, on her way to victory.

Brid Murphy of Leevale finished second, and Ann Mangan (Beaufort) took third. Mary Joyce-Curtin (East Cork), was best 0/35, and Joan Coyle of Dundrum South Dublin won the 0/40 division.

This was a well-organised event, and runners were afterwards treated to plentiful supplies of refreshments. It was good to witness road racing back in Cork City.

Here's hoping that this race will now become an annual fixture."
