Race Report (Irish runner, Vol 7, No 4, June 1987)

Adidas Cork Half Marathon
21st April 1987 By Michael Joyce

This race was held on Easter Monday, a day previously reserved for Cork City Marathon. There was a good entry of over 300 for two laps over the Lee Road circuit.

The circuit is by no means an easy one, and Robert Costelloe’s time of 65:08 was quite exceptional. Costelloe was never troubled, winning by more than three minutes from his fellow Limerick man Neil Cusack, with Martin Casey of Togher third, Sean Harte (St. Finbarr’s) fourth, Tony O’Halloran (Leevale) fifth, and Cormac O’Connor (Bandon) sixth.

The ladies’ race was won easily by Marion Lyons (St. Finbarr’s) in 83:06, from the veteran Kathleen Looney (Blarney), and Eileen Prunty (East Cork).

Derry O’Driscoll (St. Finbarr’s), now approaching 50, had an excellent time of 73:30 to win the over-45 veteran section, while Seamus Cregan (Croom) won the over-40 prize with 73:53. FLor O'Leary (St. Finbarr’s) won the over-50 in 77:20.
A complaint of many of the runners was lack of split times and poor control of traffic. Nevertheless, the race, on a sunny but windy day, was an enjoyable occasion for all concerned.
