Presentation to Jerry Kiernan

Making his first appearance in Ireland since his tremendous run in the Olympic Marathon, Jerry Kiernan showed why he is one of the most sought after athletes in the world, when he reduced the tough Dromina course record by a staggering 29 seconds. Jerry himself had held the record of 46:59, from 2 years before, and he certainly made up for his 4th placing of last year, when he strolled to a convincing win with a world class time of 46:30, and he admitted that he could have run a lot faster, but he would have had a job to explain it to his coach Brendan O'Shea, who had warned him to do just enough to win, and reserve something for his Chicago Marathon, in 2 weeks time.

The 'Peleton' after Half a Mile

After opening with a 4:30 mile, Jerry was clear from Noel Harvey and Paul Maloney, and North Cork A.C. athlete Peter Maher, who was having the race of his life. Cusack was a little adrift at this stage, but later came back as the blistering pace began to tell on the others.

Jerry Kiernan conquers Newtown Hill


From the mile mark Kiernan drew gradually away and reached the half way point in 22:55. His only other anxious moment would be the tough hill out of Newtown but he had no need to worry, he absolutely flew the hill with a mile of well under 5 minutes and came home to a rousing reception almost 2 minutes ahead of his clubmate Noel Harvey with Neil Cusack keeping up his great record in the vent in 3rd place followed by another Clonliffe athlete Eamonn Tierney. Then came Richard Clifford, and the sensation of the race Peter Maher.

Senior Men's Prizewinners

He was followed by Paul Maloney, John Scanlon of Rathkeale, Galway marathon winner Paddy Murphy and John Fitzgerald of Clonmel. All the top 10 were under 50 minutes, and this gives an idea of the quality of the race. There was quantity as well, as 720 athletes crossed the finish line, to make it another record for the event.

Senior Women's Prizewinners

The ladies race was won by Chrstine Kennedy of Galway from Catherine Hennessy of Kilkenny and Kathleen Connors of Waterford and this underlines the popularity of the event outside the County, a Cork girl has yet to win. Christine Kennedy also won in 1983 while the first one was won by Mary Purcell and her course record is still to the good.

Junior Men's Prizewinners

Another Galway athlete won the Junior Race, Anthony Spellman, while the over 40 title went to Johnny Cregan of Croom, with Willie Neenan of Millstreet winning the over 50 prize.

Veteran Men's Prizewinners

Full credit must go to the local ladies catering committee, who provided refreshments for all, and, of course, the Garda Authorities, and Civil Defence provided an excellent service, coupled with all the other people who helped in various capacities to make this an event to remember in the athletics calendar, making it without doubt the best quality, and certainly the best value, race in the country with plaques, certs and tee shirts plus refreshments, of course, for all finishers.
Jerry Kiernan is now sought world wide by race promoters, and his races in Ireland, in the future, will be very few indeed, but, as long as he is running, he will always come back to Dromina, and need anyone be said about what he thinks of the event.

Scene 1 - Before Race Start

It must be mentioned as well that the electronic timing provided by Race Management is sponsored by Keane's Jewellers in Cork, and Seiko, was a great asset and this coupled with the generous sponsorship of adidas ensured that the race reached a break even situation for the first time. Golden Vale Co-Op provided an ample supply of milk.

Scene 2 - Before Race Start

While the publicity given by North Cork local radio really built up the event at local level and the comprehensive coverage on the day was of the highest quality proving without a doubt that local radio has a lot to offer to the public. It was difficult to understand that no major media agency had a camera at the event but perhaps they left the exclusive rights to Marathon Magazine out of a matter of courtesy. I suppose we will never know.

Behind the Line!!

The written coverage of the event was well received and the presence of Jim Dowling and James O'Brien, from Irish Runner and Dave Dempsey was much appreciated.

Our National Director of Coaching, Mick McKeon was there competing for the third year in a row and he led a huge Wexford contingent.

The one area where people could have a genuine complaint was the narrowness of the road at the start but who knows the County Council might have the road widened for next year and would not the doing of that be a very worthwhile project and provide plenty of healthy exercise and jobs for the unemployed.
