December 24 – BELGOOLY 4 MILE & CIT GOAL MILE CANCELLED

The current cold snap has forced the cancellation of yet more athletics events.  The CIT GOAL Mile has been cancelled due to the bad weather.  The Belgooly 4 mile RR due to be held St Stephens Day has also been cancelled.

These cancellations will be hugely disappointing for the athletics community in Cork as these were important social events as well as important events for raising money for charity.

Please take time to ensure everybody is aware of these cancellations so nobody makes an unnecessary journey.

November 29 – Superb Performances by Cork Teams at National Intercounty Senior, Junior and Juvenile Evenage Cross Country Championships

There were some fine performances by Cork athletes and teams at the above championships which were held in snowbound conditions at Gransha Grounds, Derry at the weekend.  The day got off to a great start for Cork with Stephanie Cotter (West Muskerry AC) winning the Girls U12 race and leading the Cork team to victory in the intercounty competition. In the U14 category, Bela Sherlock (Dohenys AC) won individual silver and in the process led her club to the national title and the Cork team to silver medals in the intercounty contest.

There were some equally impressive performances in the boys evenage categories.  Fergal Curtin (Youghal AC) finished 6th in the U14 race and led the county team to the silver medal position. Togher AC just missed out on interclub medals at U16 level by finishing 4th but took the U18 title in style as Cork also took intercounty honours.

In the Junior categories, Cork finished 4th in the ladies event with Orlagh Farmer (Midleton AC) finishing best of the Cork athletes in 19th place. Ryan Creech (Leevale AC) was first of the Cork juniors in a competitive mens race and Cork took silver medals in this event.

Lizzie Lee (Leevale AC) took individual silver in the senior ladies race, a performance that guaranteed her a place on the Irish team for the European Cross Country championships in a couple of weeks time.  The Cork team did well to snatch bronze medals in the intercounty contest behind Dublin and Meath.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the senior mens race where the standard was as always of a particularly high calibre. Dublin were not to be denied another title with 4 of their top 6 finishers inside the top 10. The Cork team performed admirably though and finished a clear 2nd, the margin on this occasion much smaller than in previous years.  Top Cork finisher was Mark Hanrahan (Leevale AC) in 10th with Fergus Meade (East Cork AC) who made the long trip from Leeds rounding out the top 6 in 43rd place. With a number of last minute injury withdrawals this was a particularly fine performance by the Cork team.

The County Board would like to thank each and every athlete, parent, coach and supporter for contributing to a very successful weekend for Cork athletics. We are well aware of the sacrifices that everyone made to travel such a long journey and we are most grateful to all of you for entering into the team spirit that goes hand-in-hand with cross country competition.  We would like to thank Noel Curtin (Youghal AC) in particular for going beyond the call of duty by driving an athletes car back to Cork in difficult conditions on Sunday evening.

Once again, congratulations to you all and the very best of luck to all Cork athletes for the remainder of the season.

November 5 – Lisgoold 5k Road Race on Sunday, 7/11/2010

This event came up for discussion at the Cork County Board meeting on Wednesday 3/11/2010. It does not have a race Permit from Athletics Ireland. It did not have one last year and despite the best efforts of the Board we have failed to gain the co-operation of Lisgoold GAA in acquiring a Permit.

We are asking all Athletics Ireland registered athletes not to participate in this event and most clubs have been emailed to this effect.  If athletes do decide to run, we would ask that they do not wear club colours and do not register for the event under the name of an Athletics Ireland club.

October 31 - County Senior & Junior Cross Country Championships

Ailis MacSweeney, Leevale AC has also had a fantastic championships making the semi finals of the 100m and anchoring the 4x100m team to another Irish record of 43.93 seconds in that event. Congratulations also to Brian Murphy, UCC AC who was part of the Mens 4x400m team.

April 21 – Outstanding Performance by Douglas Community School at ISF World Schools Cross Country championsips

Douglas Community School Boys (all members of Togher AC) produced an outstanding display today to finish an impressive 5th in the ISF World Schools Cross Country Championships in Liptovsky Mikulas, Slovakia.  The boys event was won by Turkey followed by Australia in 2nd and New Zealand 3rd with the Douglas CS boys representing Ireland a mere 4 points behind the 4th placed British team.  This was an outstanding achievement in a field consisting of 21 teams from all over the world.  Top Irish finisher was Patrick Coleman in 9th followed by his teammates Cullen Lynch (21st), Ian Tobin (22nd), Mark Seacy (36th), Andrew O’Keeffe (61st) and Jamie Sullivan (77th).

It is all the more remarkable as the team led by coach Steven Macklin and head of delegation Mark Dineen got the boys to the venue after a marathon 13 hour ferry trip and 2,250km of driving across France and Germany when their flights were cancelled as a result of the Icelandic Volcano incident.  Heartiest congratulations to the team and best wishes for a safe trip home.

January 29 – GOAL Mile Saturday 30th 2-4pm CIT Track

Everybody is aware of the recent disaster in Haiti, which has caused so much harm to this impoverished nation.  A fundraising mile run/jog/walk will be held in the CIT Track on Saturday next (January 30th) to raise funds for the GOAL charity.  The event will be the same as the Christmas Goal Mile.  The event is being fully supported by the Athletics Community in Cork and the Track is being made available by the Cork Institute of Technology free of charge.  There will be no overheads so every cent raised will go straight to the Goal Charity.

There is no minimum or maximum donation.  The event is open to all ages and abilities.  Clubs are asked to publicise this event so that this fundraising venture will be very successful.

January 29 – South Munster Schools CC

Results from todays South Munster Cross Country held at Cork Institute of Technology. Sincere gratitude to the authorities at CIT and CIT athletic club for hosting such a well organised fixture.  Athletics Action returns there again for the Munsters on Friday 26th February and All Irelands on Saturday 13th March

January 27 – Valley Ring Road Race in Bantry

Preparations for the " Valley Ring "10 mile road race on Sunday February 14th in Bantry are well under way. This is the first roadrace in West Cork this year so organisers are encouraging locals and anyone with family connections to The Mealagh to participate as well as casual and club runners to help put the region on the running map. The race is aiming to promote physical activity as a way of getting fit, de-stressing, experiencing the feel good factor and meeting new people.  Post race gatherings are interesting as everyone has a story to tell and great friendships are formed as a result.  The course is takes in some of the most scenic parts of West Cork.

Come along please and support us by participating. You can walk, jog or run on the day!

On-line registration is now open on: www.runireland.com.  Only €10.  Race HQ is in Mealagh community hall, 3 miles outside of Bantry.  There will be plenty of signposting so you cannot miss the event.  There will be water stations organised by the local community and refreshments after the race.

A local registration evening is being held on Friday Feb 12th from 7 to 8pm in the local community hall.
Please do not leave it until the morning of the race as that space is allotted to any surprise visiting runners

Your support would be greatly appreciated – further details email bantryac@gmail.com

January 17 – Notice Regarding County Road Championships

As you all will have been aware, the recent bad weather resulted in the cancellation of a number of athletic events including the Mallow 10 Mile Road Race scheduled for January 10th.  Mallow AC have written to the board requesting permission to hold their rescheduled race on Sunday February 7th, the proposed date for the County Road Championships in Ballinhassig.  The road championships could be held in the same venue on Wednesday March 17th in conjunction with the Paddy Desmond Memorial Road Race.  Options for Mallow to hold the race on a different date are extremely limited due to the calendar being essentially full until mid-May.

A decision will be made on Mallows Request at the AGM on Saturday.
