November 6 Munster Intermediate Cross Country Championships

The Munster intermediate cross country championships were held yesterday in Dungarvan.  Conditions were very good.  James McCarthy of East Cork set the pace early in the event with Simon Doherty of Togher running on his shoulder.  McCarthy pulled ahead during the third lap, opening up a gap on Doherty, which was never closed and enjoyed a comfortable victory.  Doherty stitched towards the end of the race and fell back a few places. At this stage it looked certain Riocht would take the team title but Doherty recovered and came through strongly to finish second.  Elton Heffernan continued his impressive form coming home next for Togher followed by the 2005 County intermediate champion Eoin O’Sullivan and Steven Macklin in 12th.  Despite the gallant effort of the Togher team they narrowly missed out on winning the team title losing out on count back after finishing with the same number of points as Riocht.  The county team fared better securing gold in impressive style, team: James McCarthy (East Cork), Simon Doherty, Elton Heffernan, Eoin O’Sullivan, Steven Macklin (Togher) and Tony Kelleher (Eagle).

The intermediate womens team failed to impact on the medals but there were impressive runs by Maire Heffernan (Liscarroll), Sharon McGarry (St Finbarrs) and Niamh Roe (Eagle).

In the juvenile uneven age cross country championships there were some very good performances by Cork athletes.  Nearly all County teams finished in the medals while a number of clubs picked up team prizes.

November 3 Cork City Marathon Returns!

Bank Holiday Monday, 4th June 2007, will see Cork City host its first Marathon since 1986.

The race will incorporate a wheelchair category and a Team Relay Event, in which teams of between two and four runners will compete in the 26-mile, 385-yard (42.195km) course. The race will set off from the South Mall at 9.00am, covering a single circuit of the city’s suburbs through Blackpool, Sunday’s Well, the Carrigrohane Road, the Lough, Skehard Road, Mahon, the Marina, South Main Street and Washington Street, to finish on the South Mall.

The Event Manager, Gina Johnson, said “This will be an exciting sporting event for athletes. We want to see everyone in the city and suburbs on the streets to support the runners.”

The event organisers include Cork City Council, the Cork Chamber of Commerce, the Cork Business Houses Athletic Association (BHAA), the Athletics Association of Ireland (AAI), the Gardaí, the Health Service Executive, Bus Éireann, the Hotels Federation, LeisureWorld Cork, the City of Cork Vocational Educational Committee (VEC) and the Media Sponsor, the Evening Echo. It is anticipated that five thousand entrants will take part in the first year of what is set to become an annual date in Cork’s busy social, sporting and community diaries. Tying in with the Ocean to City race on June 2nd, the Marathon will make a great sporting weekend in Cork.

Launching the event, Cork’s Lord Mayor, Cllr. Michael Ahern, invited groups of friends, families, colleagues, businesses, clubs and community associations to keep fit and healthy by participating in the Team Relay Event. A veteran of Cork City marathons himself, he encouraged those interested in running to get on their shoes and start a training programme. He also stressed the need for people to train carefully and seek medical advice if necessary.

The BHAA (www.corkbhaa.com) and the AAI (www.corkathletics.org) organise programmes of road races throughout the year and some of these could be useful rehearsals for the Marathon. Leisure World will also be assisting members with their training programmes for the Marathon at their Bishopstown and Churchfield centres.

Good Girl Derval!

World Indoor Hurdles Champion Cork’s Derval O’Rourke delivered Ireland’s first medal at the European T&F championships in Sweden this evening.  Her path to the final was on the back of solid rather than spectacular performances and starting in Lane 1 in the final, it may have seemed a medal was not a real prospect.  Lane 1 made no difference to Derval in the final though as she got off to an awesome start leading over the first few hurdles.  As the others closed in we wondered would she drift back like she did in the semi-final but this was not the semi final and she just kept going with only the eventual winner the Swede Susanna Kallur able to pass her.  As she ducked crossing the line there was no doubt that she won a medal but what colour? After a few anxious moments and a protest her silver medal was confirmed.  Her time was 12.72 – a new personal best and a new national record.  Wind +0.5m/s.

Well done Derval, we are all very proud of you in Cork.  Well done also to her club, coaches and team mates who helped get this far!

March 27 – Newmarket to Kanturk RR

LATVIAN BRALITIS BEST IN DUHALLOW 5.

West Waterford’s newly adopted Latvian Sandis Bratilis maintained a consistent run of performances on capturing the Duhallow 5 Mile Road Race at a damp Kanturk yesterday.

A strong and representative field added a strong international dimension to the proceedings but at the end of a quality line up and hot competition, Bratilis held off some of the best athletes from the South West Region.  Bratilis had joined the West Waterford club only two days previously but continued on his consistent efforts that earned runner up in Ballycotton and a win in Croom.  Run over a relatively flat and fast course between Newmarket and Kanturk, Bratilis alongside Tom Carey(Limerick), John Downs(Donoure Harriers) and Dzintais Klava (West Waterford) were amongst the front runners in the initial thrust.

At the three mile mark, the battle at the head raged between Bratilis and Carey. As the rain teemed down, the exchanges were nip and tuck, Bratilis, the former Ballynonty AC athelete began to pull away.

Indeed Bratilis upped the tempo a mile from home, a dash of pace confirmed his class to brush the tape in impressive fashion in a highly creditable 24 minutes 24 seconds.

17 seconds adrift came Carey with third placed Downs, sixteen seconds further in arrears.

In the senior ladies, the versatile Olympian and former national senior cross country champion Rosemary Ryan(Bilboa) demonstrated her talents to take a decisive victory from Niamh O’Sullivan(Riocht)  with Tracy Roche of Doneen placed third.

February 12th – AAI Masters & Intermediate X-Country!

The national intermediate and Masters cross country championships were held today in Carrignavar, Co. Cork.  Host club Carraig na bhFear did an excellent job.  A special thanks to Gerry and Nuala Finerin for allowed their lands be used for the course.  The course used for the first time proved to be very convenient, only a short distance form the village and changing rooms.  Underfoot conditions were good.  The course itself was for the most part flat but very open and the strong breeze blowing made life difficult for both athletes and spectators.

First race off was the masters women’s race.  The county team was weakened by the loss of world masters 10,000m Carmel Parnell of Leevale through injury.  Carmel Crowley of Bandon had a very good run finishing 5th in her category.  Next hoem was Margo Dinan of St Finbarrs leading her club to bronze.  Overall the county finished 4th only 4 points off the 3rd placed county Meath.  In the over 45 category was won by Mary Sweeney of St Finbarrs with her club mate Joan Hough 2nd.  Kathleen O’Brien of East Cork won the over 60 category.  St Finbarrs took bronze in the interclub competition.

In the masters men’s race Donnacha O’Mashony of East Cork was up with the leaders for most of the race and crossed the line fourth overall.  He won the over 40 category with Cathal O’Connell of St Finbarrs second in this category.  Eamonn McEvoy of St Finbarrs won silver in the over 50 category with Tommy Murphy of Skibbereen 4th.  Willie Neenan of Millstreet won the over 70 category.  Cork took silver in the inter county competition while St Finbarrs won silver in the inter club competition.

In the intermediate women’s race the county team was led home by Jennifer Goggin of Leevale.  The county finished 3rd overall, the other scoring members of the team were Ailbe Creedon (Leevale), Sharon McGarry (St Finbarrs) and Maire Heffernan (Liscarroll).   There was disappointment in the intermediates men’s race as neither the Cork team nor a Cork club team figured.  James McCarthy of East Cork had a good run as did county intermediate champion Eoin O’Sullivan of Donoughmore and Ian O’Leary of St Finbarrs who travelled from Wales to run.

January 15th – Munster Senior & Junior Cross Country Championships

The Munster Senior & Junior Cross Country Championships were held today in Beaufort, Co. Kerry, a village famous for it’s scenery which unfortunately due to bad weather today could not be seen.  The course was flat which should have meant a fast course but unfortunately due to heavy rain underfoot conditions were very poor and it was hard work all the way around the course.

The first race of the day was the junior mens race.  Kevin O’Brien of Glenbower had another impressive run closing in on the winner as he crossed the line in second place leading his club to bronze.  The junior womens was won by Joyce Curtin of Glenbower in what was one of her best performances of recent times. She characteristically took an early lead and stretched it out as the race progressed.  Michelle Finn of Duhallow also ran well taking bronze leading her club to the bronze position.  The County team took silver in this race.

The senior men’s race was completely dominated by Cork athletes.  Brian McMahon of Carraig na bhFear went into an early lead after the first lap.  Close behind the 2004 County senior cross country champion were Michael O’Herlihy of North Cork, Alan O’Shea of Bantry and Sean McGrath and Fergus Meade of East Cork.  With each lap McMahon further consolidated his lead and crossed the line almost a minute clear of the second placed athlete to take his first Munster Senior Cross Country title.  O’Herlihy took silver and O’Shea Bronze.  Meade and McGrath of East Cork were 4th and 5th.  East Cork claimed another Munster Senior title while Leevale were third.  Cork won the inter county competition.

Reigning County senior cross country champion Louise Cavanagh of UCC led for most of the senior womens race and had a sizeable lead over Kerry athlete and club mate Freda Davoren going into the last lap.  Davoren closed that gap considerable and was involved in an exciting finish.  Cavanagh held out to take gold with Davoren second.  UCC won the team competition ahead of Leevale who were led home by Carmel Parnell in 4th place.  Cork took another intercounty gold here.  Photos, Results

Well done to all the Cork athletes who took part and congratulations to county team manager Joe O’Flynn.
