This
year’s race is set to have a top class field take part with

number of Olympians. Most of these are taking part in order to make use
of the

gauge
their fitness in the build up to the Dublin Marathon. Most runners in
the race
will use the race to set themselves up for the winter cross country and
road
race season.
The
names on the elite athlete list is quiet impressive and
indicates that it will be one of the most competitive distance races of
the
year. The fact that so many of Irelands elite runners are set
to
attend indicates that this is a race not to be missed. If you want to

– 4th for Rob in the 50Km Walk in the Olympics
There
is huge delight in the athletics community after a wonderful
performance by
Robert Heffernan of Togher in the 50Km Walk in the London 2012 Olympics. Robbie finished 4th in a new Irish
Record Time. Rob knocked over 8 minutes
off the old Irish record.
The
race was a very exciting affair. Rob,
encouraged by enthusiastic and intense Irish Support all around the
course, was
8th at the 40K mark and moved up to 4th place
over the
last 10K. Third place almost looked
possible at one stage as the third placed athlete from China struggled,
but he
held on to take bronze. Rob also had a
great performance in the 20Km walk finishing 9th earlier
this week!
Robert’s
performance is one of the greatest performances by an Irish athlete at
the
Olympics, a performance he can be very proud of. Well
done Robbie!
Well
done also to the other Cork Olympians who were in action in the Track
and Field
in London – Derval, Ciarán and Marian!
Best
of
Luck to Olive who is in action in the women’s 20Km walk @ 5pm this

The
participants don’t need to be the fastest person in the World to win,
they just
need to be there and show their determination. At the end of each
regional
event every
participant’s race number will
be placed in a draw to win one of four places on the Powerade London
2012
Olympic Stadium Experience
Every
participant will receive a Powerade
ION4 Sports

can also get
involved in the Race
Ready Warm Ups on
the day along with Hydration Testing and hints and tips from a Powerade
Sports Scientist.
The
Olympic Stadium experience will include travel to, and a tour of the
stadium,
expert advice on preparation and training techniques from Jessica
Ennis’s
coach Toni
Minichiello,
coaching tips from Derval O’Rourke, Powerade Ireland Brand Ambassador,
and the
chance to run 100m Irish track record in the same venue, which will see
world-class athletes make sporting history during the Games this summer.
Derval
O’Rourke,
Powerade Ireland Brand Ambassador said; “This
is an amazing opportunity for someone to run a 100m at the Olympic
Stadium in
London and set their own personal best, which will also be an Irish
track
record. The winners will get a chance to experience what it will feel
to be an
elite athlete runnning in the Olympic Stadium even before the athletes
do! I am
looking forward to being able to help the winners on the day with tips
on how
they can set their personal best on the 3rd May.”
Jennifer
Branigan,
Brand Activation Manager for Powerade Ireland, commented, “2012
is an exciting year for Powerade as we gear up to hydrate athletes
during the
London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We’re delighted to be
offering
sportsmen and women the opportunity to compete in the Olympic Stadium
and
create their own moment of sporting history. I’m sure it will be an
unforgettable experience for the winner.”
Powerade
is hydrating many of the Irish Team hopefuls in the preparation for and
during
the London
2012 Olympic
Games.

Champions Point The Way To Ballintotis Road Race
Ballintotis
will again host the opening evening fixture on the extremely busy Cork
road
running calendar on Thursday April 19th. Two years ago, the
inaugural ‘4’
miler at the picturesque venue, located just off the Main N25 road
between
Midleton and Castlemartyr, proved an outstanding success with nearly
450
runners taking part. Twelve months on over 550 went to the start line,
whilst
another sizeable contingent took part in the non competitive walk.
This
year’s race was officially launched by the Lakeside at Loughaderra with
Donal
O’Sullivan General Manager of Trabolgan Holiday Village joining local
organisers to kick start the countdown to an occasion that will again
see all
proceeds going towards the Ballintotis Area Community Council Building
Fund.
East
Cork AC who previously held the fixture in nearby Castlemartyr are
again to the
fore in the organisation and promotion of the race as are members of
the highly
respected Ballycotton Running Promotions team. Without the
tremendous
help and co-operation of both the aforementioned the race would not be
possible
to stage.
Currently
the main objective of the Ballintotis Community Council Committee is to
provide
a suitable multi purpose floor on the splendid new Community Centre
which is
located adjacent to the Church grounds. Since last year’s race
tremendous
progress has been made as reflected by the fact that the Centre will be
HQ for
the big April 19th fixture. The staging of the race at the venue over
the past
2 years has generated a vital part of the funding which has seen such
major
work already completed.
So
this
year (weather permitting) the focus will both be on the new
construction and
the Car Park of St Colman’s Church which will again be the venue for
after race
refreshments on the lake side at Loughaderra. The start line is
approximately
200 meters from the race base and the course will see the runners pass
the Car
Park as they set out on what is predominantly a fast flat course along
quiet
country roads, before finishing back in front of the Church.
Entry
fee for the event is 10 euro, with all finishers receiving a souvenir
tee
shirt. There is a wide range of prizes in all categories along
with a
plentiful supply of spot prizes. For those who make the headlines up
front some
attractive prizes are on offer topped by a family weekend break at
Trabolgan
Holiday Village for both first man and first lady across the line.
Incidentally
both James McCarthy of East Cork AC and Rhona Lynch of Eagle AC have
won the
event in both 2010 and 2011.
Race
time on Thursday 19th is 8pm with all participants urged to arrive
early and
follow the advice of the stewards in relation to parking..
Meantime
a non competitive walk will also be held beginning at
6.30pm over the same course. Again entry fee for adults is 10
euro which
automatically entitles the participants to the aforementioned
commemorative tee
shirt. Children accompanied by an adult can partake free of
charge.
Entry
to both the race and walk, changing facilities, refreshments and prize
giving
will all be centred in close proximity.
*Further
information is available on www.ballintotis.com or
by calling Sean Murphy or John Cashman on the special race line
number 086-8778182 .
