Bandon AC, WIT and Ireland athlete, Phil Healy's stunning record-breaking year continued at this evening's 67th Cork City Sports, at CIT Athletics Stadium, where she broke Sarah Reilly's 17 year old 200m record of 23.02 sec, set at the World Championships, in Edmonton, Canada
Phil, who has been called the Ballineen Bullet, lived up to her 'moniker', rocketing out of the blocks. Coming off the bend, it looked like she might snatch victory, however Canadian Crystal Emannuel, last year's winner, moved ahead, to win in 22.75 secs, just 0.24sec ahead of Phil. In the final stages, American Joanna Atkins nosed ahead of Phil,by the slightest of margins, 0.09 sec - 22.90 secs to Phil's 22.99 sec
There were several minutes of high tension after the race, while we waited with bated breath to hear if Phil had broken the record. Then, when it was announced that not only had she broken the record, but, in doing so, Phil became the first Irish woman to go under the 23 second barrier, the entire crowd gave Phil a well-deserved standing ovation.
Interviewed afterwards, by Irish Examiner's John McHale, Phil outlined her plans for the coming weeks, culminating in the European Championships in Berlin next month. John McHale's joking response to Phil's hectic schedule "..... Nothing much so!"
