Phil Healy, Bandon AC, has been elected European Athletics Female Athlete of the Month for January 2018, following a social media vote by European Athletics, with voting taking place across the European Athletics’ Facebook and Twitter pages over the last five days.

Full voting information isn't available, however, according to European Athletics, Phil was a clear winner, amassing approx. 2,000 votes, and the following information was gleaned from the voting site.  Thanks to all the Cork Athletics supporters who 'came out in force' to help Phil's cause. It's not often we have an opportunity to vote for one of our own when choosing an athlete for such a prestigious award.

Phil Healy was nominated for the award after she ran a 52.08 sec PB, when winning in Vienna, on Saturday January 27th, for another World Championship qualifying time, in a high quality field. She is now just 0.50 secs away from Karen Shinkin's 51.58 Irish record set in February 2002, Phil's previous indoor best was 53.15.  Her performance placed her at the top of the European 400m Indoor Rankings for 2018, however Swiss athlete Lea Springer has pushed Phil down a place since then.
