Well done again to all who attended on Saturday, the third day of the Cork Athletics winter Coaching Series. The weather was kind again to us on Saturday, which allowed us to get some good jumping in.

 Key points from Saturday’s session

•    Mat exercises with landing drills & bar clearance.
•    Introduction to the plant foot, i.e. where to plant and what angle.
•    Take off drills using hands and knees.
•    Running drills for proper curve and lean.
•    Key drills to do at home to improve / maintain technique.

After doing all the training jumps and drills etc, we did another PB challenge (Personal Best.), based on competition rules. There was a great turn-out for  this session, so many that we had to keep 4 heights going, starting at 0.85, 0.95, 1.00, 1.35 & 1.4m.

I guess it’s is no surprise that this part of the session has become so popular with all the athletes. It was great to see such a number of athletes giving High Jump a go, and to see all the young athletes mixing so well.

The social aspect of this session cannot be underestimated as athletics at times can be a lonely place, so it is very important to have a group together all involved in High Jump. Hopefully it will help them to be more relaxed in a competition setting.

As this was the third session, it is time to crunch the numbers and give all who are attending a goal, this goal is the jumping height which each athlete has the capability of achieving by the end of the series.

Note: If you feel your athlete needs to move up or down in height please let me know at the next session.

As we are now mid way the grouping of athletes is more important so that they will get the best out of the session. There will be more jumping critiquing and adjusting at the higher heights while it’s more important just to focus on the basic technique at the lower heights. Please see attached the PB challenge tracker.

Again, Please note that this is open to all athletes on the day, so feel free to come on down and get a jump in.

Looking forward to meeting you all again in two weeks time, please spread the word to any more high jumpers out there who would be interested.

Thanks also to all those parents who helped out. (Very much appreciated :-)
