West Muskerry AC is one of a growing number of Cork Athletics member clubs to acquire and develop their own training facilities.

West Muskerry AC was founded in 1984, and has gone from strength to strength.  It started with just 15 athletes, and, so far this year, there are over 220 Athletics Ireland registered athletes in the club.

The club's guiding philosophy has always been "To compete and do the best you can, have fun and be part of a team no matter what the outcome". This has been instilled in the club's athletes since the club's foundation.

During the winter months, the club trains in Macroom's Tom Creedon Park, by kind permission of Macroom GAA, for which West Muskerry AC is very grateful.  In recent years, particularly during 2016/2017, the club has experienced rapid and significant growth in membership, posing a problem for both parking and training space for such large numbers.   The river was also a concern.  The club decided to seek and develop it's own training grounds, and had sourced a field which is very suitable for the club's needs and requirements.

A major fundraising drive is now underway to purchase said field which will benefit all the athletes young and old and also give athletes a chance to try different events, such as Long Jump, Shot, Discus and Javelin, in a safe environment.

On Saturday May 27th, at 2pm, in Macroom GAA pitch in the Castle Grounds, West Muskerry AC is holding an open sports and family fun day, with something for all, including an art competition on the day, with the theme of "Summer  Holidays", along with a baking competition (best queen cakes/cup cakes).   All schools in the area are welcome to test their relay teams, in advance of the Cork City Sports, as there will be a special relay race for them.

The club is holding an athletics Summer Camp from July 24th to 27th.  The camp will cater for 5 to 13 year olds, and will be held in Clondrohid Track and Astroturf facility, from 10am to 2pm daily.  Further information for the summer camp is available by calling the club's phone on 087 7874554, or Collette O'Riordan on 086 3517204.

On August 13th, the club is holding a novel Fundraising Duathalon, in The Lee Valley Harbour, Coachford, with the help of Outdoor Discovery Adventure Company.  This event will be the first of its type in Cork to involve runnning and Kayak sections.  Entry is open to both individuals and teams of two people, and there will be different categories.  For further information, contact Collette O'Riordan on 086 3517204.

On October 21st, West Muskerry AC is holding a "Who wants to be a Thousandaire", in the Riverside Park Hotel, Macroom, at 7pm. A fantastic night is guaranteed.

Anyone who would like to donate to the fundraising, or support the club in any way, should contact the club, or Collette O'Riordan on 086 3517204
