Richard the Lion-Hearted
Richard O'Flynn
This year’s B.L.E. Inter-Counties Cross-Country Championship at Kilbarry in Waterford attracted a good deal of attention with the presence of Providence teammates Richard O’Flynn and Brendan Quinn, home on Christmas vacation, and Quinn fresh from his fine run in the American championship.
Brendan, on foot of his 7th placing in the latter and because of his excellent form of the previous 6 months when he also recaptured his Irish steeplechase record and he had in his favour home territory, entered the race as slight favourite. Richard, building back again to top form after an indifferent year, was hungry for success.
L to R; Danny McDaid, Richard O'Flynn, Brendan Quinn and Robert Costello
Flynn no doubt was anxious to impress the selectors and give himself automatic selection for the World Championships, he set about his task with grim determination and surprised the leading group after the first mile by breaking away on his own, leaving the rest to battle for the minor placings. He admitted afterwards that he changed plans just after the start of the
race, anyway he likes running in front and with the very sticky nature of the course his change was well justified. At the 3 mile mark Robert Costello and Brendan Quinn were locked in battle but the big Waterford man had more in reserve at the finish to come home 3 seconds clear of the Limerick man. O’Flynn’s winning time was 32.15 and this was 19 seconds clear of Quinn.
Cork easily retained their Inter-County crown but a predictable surprise was the 2nd place finish of Tipperary, led by John Fitzgerald and Peter Maher, with county winner Tommy Maloney failing to make the scoring six having been with the leaders for the first 2 miles. Limerick finished 3rd.
Special mention must be made of the 4th place finish of 44-year-old Danny McDaid, who came storming through on the last lap.

Breakthrough for Valerie
Valerie O'Mahony
It is difficult to think that Valerie O’Mahoney is still only 24 years of age. As long as I have been actively involved in the sport, stretching back to 1970, Valerie has been competing.
Top four (L to R) Greta Hickey (4th), Mary Friel (3rd), Valerie O'Mahony (1st) and Ann Keenan (2nd)
She is an inspiration to all with her dedication and her loyalty to her club, Togher, during all those years when things were not going as well as she might have liked, with difficult work hours and a recurring viral infection. But it was all worth while in Waterford as she bided her time with the calculation of a veteran, before going on, during the last lap, to fashion a meritorious victory over an equally dedicated Ann Keenan, breaking the monopoly of the DCH girls.
Striving for supremecy in the ladies race
Dublin once again easily retained their team title but they can expect a much stiffer challenge from Cork in the years to come if the likes of Sonia O’Sullivan, Carmel McCarthy, Anita Philpott and company realise their full potential.

Junior Men's Championship
Downes easily
John Downes
John Downes, another athlete who had a virus problem last year, seems to be back on the right track again and looked to have plenty in reserve over Stephen Judge, but the subsequent showing of both, in their respective Regional Championships, must have given hope to others, and we should see a cracking race for the Inter-Club title on February 23 at Santry.
Dublin were the masters of Cork in the county contest.
