 Bantry AC's Darragh McElhinney continued his outstanding progress when, at the IFAM Outdoor / Flanders Cup Meet, on Oordegem, Belgium, on Saturday May 25th, he ran a Personal Best of 13:54.10, lowering Kevin Mulcaire's record of 14:02.30, set in May 2015. Darragh becomes the first Irish Junior to break 14 minutes outdoors. In yesterday's race, Darragh placed second behind Belgian Mortier Jennen, who won in 13:49.28. Darragh knocked a massive 19 seconds off his previous outdoor 5000m best. It also puts Darragh 70th on the All-Time Irish 5000m standings. Darragh ran 14:11, to set his previous PB, at the same meet, in 2018.

 

Earlier this year, Guesting at the Connacht Indoor Championships, in AIT Athlone, in February, Darragh set an Irish Indoor 5000m Record, when he took a phenomenal 23.35 seconds off Aaron Hanlon's (Clonliffe Harriers AC) previous record of 14:37.02

Darragh ran in 5000m Race 3, along with several other Irish runners: Michael Power, 14th, 14:04.19; Pierre Murchan, 17th, 14:06.29; Kevin Dooney, 26th, 14:19.66; and Rory Chesser, 30th, 14:39.65

Earlier, in Race 1 of the 5000m, John Travers ran 13:28.86, for fourth place, in the fastest time by an Irishman in the past 8 years. This places Travers 14th on the All-Time Irish 5000m standings.

Liam Harris, Togher AC - 3000m Steeplechase

Togher AC's Liam Harris was another Corkman in action at the meet, running in the 3000m Steeplechase. Liam finished 14th, in 9:09.65
