As of 10am today, Tuesday January 29th 2019, forty one (41) of Cork's fifty six registered clubs now have registered athletes, with a total of 3,253 members registered to date. Several clubs have less than the requisite ten (10) members to constitute an Athletics Ireland registered club.

On Friday next, February 1st, Cork Athletics is planning to publish the County's Registration Figures for January 2019. At this point, Tuesday 29th, Fifteen (15) clubs have yet to register a single athlete. Please ensure that your Club Registrar registers any outstanding memberships on, or by, Thursday night, so that a) All current members are registered and, more importantly, b) The Club, along with its Athletes, Coaches and Officials are covered by Insurance.

Athletics Ireland Club & Athlete Insurance

A 'Period of Grace' is in place until January 31st, whereby 2018 cover was extended, to allow time for athletes and officials to be re-registered for 2018.  Note however that this grace period did not, and does not, cover competition, whether championship, or simply participation in a 'common or garden' road race.

This period will expire on Thursday night next, consequently any athlete, coach or official, or any individual acting in any capacity, who remains unregistered after that, will NOT be covered by Athletics Ireland Insurance for training or competition purposes.

Many coaches and officials continue to be actively involved in Athletics, but remain unregistered.

Unregistered athletes, coaches and/or officials are NOT covered by the Athletics Ireland insurance for any purpose whatsoever, leaving those athletes, officials, coaches and clubs in a precarious position.

Any club having difficulties registering their athletes should contact Cork Athletics Registrar, John Copithorne 0861713500

2019 Athletics Ireland Registrations are now Due

Clubs are reminded that UNREGISTERED athletes are NOT covered by Athletics Irelands insurance, for ANY purpose, training or competition.

Clubs are urged to register all remaining unregistered personnel without further delay.

Webmaster's Note: I have been 'Banging on' for ages about the Bandon Rugby Club case. The Irish Times reported on the case in April 1997.  Twenty years later, the judgement is still as relevant, and stands out as a warning to the consequences of not registering members of an organisation.  A further related Irish Times article advises clubs to ensure that members are registered.
